What is your opinion on staying on bst all year round.
Assuming that is, that it happens this year and is adopted by the uk as part of the mass adoption of eu laws. Personally I would prefer it lighter in the evenings and darker in the mornings

This sort of thing is discussed every year. It never gets anywhere

StoorieHoose · 31/08/2018 20:57

Winter in Scotland is miserable enough without adding it being dark til 10am.

SomewhereNow · 31/08/2018 21:08

Sorry but the Scotland thing always comes up when this is discussed and I have to say if it’s so bloody miserable why live there?

Personally I really struggle with the dark evenings but I don’t know if changing this would be the answer.

JillCrewesmum · 31/08/2018 21:09

I'd be in favour. Hate the dark evenings.

StoorieHoose · 31/08/2018 21:10

Cos in the summer it’s light til 11pm and it’s a glorious place to live when it’s not raining!

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/08/2018 21:10

Scotland can go on its own time zone either informally or formally and stop holding the rest of the UK to ransom. It's dark a lot in Scotland in the winter no matter what the clock says.

Cardiganandcuppa · 31/08/2018 21:10

It’s just ridiculous. Everywhere else manages to stay in one time zone all year round, why can’t we?

FrancesFryer · 31/08/2018 21:11

There are people in Scandinavia who appear to like the idea. Surely they would have a worse problem than Scotland.

OP posts:
StoorieHoose · 31/08/2018 21:13

True, They probably would have it worse than Scotland

flapjackfairy · 31/08/2018 21:14

I love the dark nights and get fed up of this debate as people always argue that a change will give us more daylight! Obviously it wont it will just give us daylight at a different time . I dont see how much difference it will make in the middle of winter for it to get dark at 5 o clockish instead of being practically dark at 4 pm.

StoorieHoose · 31/08/2018 21:15

‘Holding the rest of the uk to ransom” Grin

Going by recent events I very much doubt anyone in power would take what Scotland wanted into consideration.

chchchnamechanges · 31/08/2018 21:15

Roll on independence Hmm

StoorieHoose · 31/08/2018 21:16

Ah independence! Our own time zone !!!

BikeRunSki · 31/08/2018 21:17

Cardiganandcuppa daylight saving is pretty commonly practised across Europe and N America.

MsHomeSlice · 31/08/2018 21:19

this drives me mad, honestly WILD with fury, everytime the clocks change

there is no extra light, not one single moment...it's just moved

in winter on GMT in December, on a grey day it'll be barely light at half eight, and almost dark again at half four, it matters not one single spit if we relocate that light to 9.30 til half five, or fly to the farking moon

it's winter, it's dark. MEH! Seven hours of not pitch black.

chchchnamechanges · 31/08/2018 21:19

Bearing in mind the massive push to keep Scotland at the last referendum...you wanted us so you’re stuck with us. You’ve pulled us out of the EU so we’re keeping you in darkness 😂

RedNed · 31/08/2018 21:20

And Australia

StoorieHoose · 31/08/2018 21:20

Hehehehe

museumum · 31/08/2018 21:20

A glimpse of daylight in the morning before work for as long as possible surely has to be better for everybody’s circadian rhythms whether you get SAD or not?

Makes no difference to me if it’s light till 5 or 4 but getting a bit of daylight on the way to work makes a huge difference. So I like GMT.

We are by no means the only country that changes clocks.

Dermymc · 31/08/2018 21:21

@MsHomeSlice I agree.

chchchnamechanges · 31/08/2018 21:23

I know it gets debunked every time this thread comes up, but I do think it’s nice to not go to work in the absolute pitch dark all winter. And yes, people work different times but schools and usual working times are 9ish.

chchchnamechanges · 31/08/2018 22:08

*the point I meant to make is that it’s not great for kids going to school in the dark, and not necessarily safe (but I know I’ll be told it’s nonsense).

Stephisaur · 31/08/2018 22:13

I have no issue going to work and coming home in the dark. I’ll take it over that awful low sun any day!

In terms of the clocks changing, it would be moderately more convenient not to have to change them, but I don’t see how BST all year will really affect me.

FrancesFryer · 31/08/2018 22:15

I don't think it's nonsense, but people would get used to it. The more northerly countries in Europe have less daylight but presumably are safe places to live. We would learn from them

OP posts:
MongerTruffle · 31/08/2018 22:20

This is how daylight hours are affected.
The UK would not keep DST if the rest of the EU didn't. It's bad enough that the US and EU change the clocks a week apart.
but I do think it’s nice to not go to work in the absolute pitch dark all winter
I love dark mornings and evenings.
