What is your opinion on staying on bst all year round.
Assuming that is, that it happens this year and is adopted by the uk as part of the mass adoption of eu laws. Personally I would prefer it lighter in the evenings and darker in the mornings

It’s something that’s debated every year. I remember hearing something on the radio a couple of years ago, one point of view was that having lighter evenings would make it better for people to exercise more. I’m assuming that not only were they planning on keeping BST but the weather to go with it Confused

chchchnamechanges · 31/08/2018 22:31

Are you in Scotland monger?

MongerTruffle · 31/08/2018 22:32

No, but I did live there for four years a while ago.

BlueBrush · 31/08/2018 22:34

I live in the north of England, and I don't want my children to walk to school in the dark. Can I come and join the Scottish time zone? Grin

CherryCherryCherry · 31/08/2018 22:36

Agree with poster about not wanting dcs to walk to school in the dark. I don't mind the changes but then I also like all the seasons in the uk and wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world.

attentionspan · 31/08/2018 22:42

Oh honestly. Every year.
It's called GMT for a reason. The whole world sets its clocks by the Greenwich Meridian. It would be totally ridiculous if we were to abandon it when we invented the damn thing.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/08/2018 22:43

^^ This. In the current system, even if I leave work at 4 pm, it's just about dark when I get home at 4.30 pm in winter.

I would find it a lot easier to go for a run after work if it was light a bit longer. In the morning, all people are really doing is getting up and going to work etc, hence daylight would be more useful for outdoor activities in the early evening.

Dodie66 · 31/08/2018 22:49

Seeing as we are leaving the EU next year and this won’t come in till after we’ve left it won’t affect us

chchchnamechanges · 31/08/2018 23:01

Because no one ever gets up to run before work 😂

welshmist · 31/08/2018 23:14

Population of Scotland 5,254,800. Population of Wales 3,063,456. Population of England 66,573,504.

I think the majority have the right to choose the time zone to be honest.

chchchnamechanges · 31/08/2018 23:18

It’s great being in the U.K. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thomlin · 31/08/2018 23:26

Welsh will we just grab our coats and leave then? Oh wait.. we tried that didn't we and got begged to stay as equal partners. Kindly take your majority to fuck Smile

Kewqueue · 31/08/2018 23:30

Everywhere else manages to stay in one time zone all year round, why can’t we?
Eh? No they don't! Grin

CrochetBelle · 31/08/2018 23:33

Do I need to question you for statistics as to how few of Scotland's population voted Tory, yet somehow we still ended up with a Tory Government?

Shove your majority in your piehole.

Llamallann · 31/08/2018 23:45

I live in the Highlands. In the winter it’s dark when I go to work and it’s getting dark again by 3.30pm! I don’t need it being lunch time when the darkness descends!

PickAChew · 01/09/2018 00:01

I'm with museum mum. I'm in the North of England and definitely prefer to be sending the kids off to school in some semblance of daylight, in gmt (in reality, the sky never loses its twilight pink, even at 54 degrees north). Earlier light is much better fir getting going for the day. Whether it is all but gone at 4 or 5pm makes no difference.

PickAChew · 01/09/2018 00:04

And yes, it's not just Scotland with the short winter days. In December, the lights would go off as I walked mine to school then come on again on the way home. About right, really.

TillyVonMilly · 01/09/2018 08:39

Sorry Barbara when I mentioned the exercise point of view being talked about, I also said about the weather. The being that more daylight in an evening would encourage people to exercise, children to go to the park etc, I imagine for most people, outdoor fitness is more about weather than light.

Allergictoironing · 01/09/2018 09:16

^ This. GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, and is based on it being 12 noon when the sun is at it's highest over Greenwich. TBH it makes very little difference in the heights of summer and the depths of winter, it's only in the spring & autumn that the daylight hours are really affected.

welshmist · 01/09/2018 14:21

When GMT came into use, the Victorians were covering piano legs, so if we must stick to GMT I wonder if my winter socks are up to the job re: my piano Grin

Come on people times move on what worked in 1847 was not to be set in stone surely?

WinkysTeatowel · 01/09/2018 14:29

I'm for it, hate the stupid clocks changing since having children, it messes with their routine and is otherwise pointless.

I didn't hear a single thought g about this EU survey though and based on the 15k responses from the UK not many others did either.

flapjackfairy · 01/09/2018 14:53

We will still have short winter days whatever time is on the clock. How many kids are going to be racing out to play at the park after school when it will still be dark by teatime either way ! People keep talking about more daylight when this debate raises its head as though we can magically increase that by a simple clock change.
It ranks up there with people crying that they dont want to leave europe after brexit ! We are not to my knowledge going to be attached to a tow rope and pulled to the other side of the globe unless i am missing something. Though come to think of it that might lead to longer days so that would please some.

BST all year round, at least in England and Wales, would be the first decision if I ran the country. Scotland and Northern Ireland can make their own decision.

No change would I think save lives, and fewer people start work early than say 25 years ago given the job losses in mining, industry and some other areas.

I think that it may not happen in the EU unfortunately because of objections from those near the Arctic Circle.
