Be that restaurant/pub/take away/wedding venue etc.

Had the best fish and chips of my life this week, two days in a row. Said to dh its on my top five. Then started thinking about the rest.

What would be yours? Mine in no particular order:-

The Bay fish and chips, Stonehaven, Scotland.
South Causey Inn, Beamish, England. - pub.
Miller and Carter - its a chain steak restaurant but did the best Chateaubriand ive ever had.
Landmark - chinese restaurant in our local China Town.
1964 - a fine dining place local to us thats never got enough people in im concerned it will close but everyone I know who has tried it said its amazing.

Anyone else?

Sapporo Ichiban - an unlikely Japanese restaurant in grotty Catford
Le Gavroche
Conch fritters in a tiny restaurant by Lake Okechobee in Florida, the name of which has sadly escaped me
Gauthier in Soho

I am finding it very hard to narrow it down to just five. My fifth I think will be Cafe Vaudeville in Belfast, now sadly closed and replaced with a substandard Cuban place.

Il Verbano. On an island in lake maggiore.
The chipshop on the harbour in Ullapool.
The pub in craster opposite the smokery.
Greens restaurant in Whitby.
Copes oyster house in Windsor

WhatAmISupposedToBeDoing · 31/08/2018 20:03

Michelin star places usually do good value lunch menus. House Of Tides in Newcastle has one star and does a 4 course tasting lunch for £35, or a 3.course menu for £30.

NapQueen · 31/08/2018 20:04

WhatAm oh thanks for the recommendation!

The Anchor Inn, Bridport, Dorset (the restaurant menu, not the bar menu)

For a small pub the food was exquisite. Not a single thing for a large group of us to find fault with.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 31/08/2018 20:11

Gidleigh Park Hotel
The Crab House Cafe in Wyke Regis Dorset
Navarros Charlotte Street in London

I like Mark Hix's place in Lyme Regis, not sure it would hit top 5 though

  1. Chequers Inn, Wooburn. Pub food done really, really well.
  2. Clos Maggiore, London. Lovely surroundings, and the dessert was utter heaven!
  3. Pepper Tree Restaurant, Coromandel, NZ. Best mussels EVER.
  4. The Waterside Inn, Bray. Total luxury, and such perfection
  5. The maternity ward. First tea and toast after birth and being nil by mouth (no mouth fresheners even) for 36 hours still ranks as best meal ever!
AhHaaa · 31/08/2018 20:12

Also:
Frederics in Maidstone, Kent
Bangkok House in Canterbury, Kent
Pabna's in Pontefract, West Yorkshire

  1. Keens steakhouse in New York. Incredible porterhouse and chateaubriand.
  2. The beautiful Thai curries me and DP has at a tiny restaurant on Koh Lanta.
  3. Crispy sweet and sour chicken from Wing Seong Fatty’s in Singapore.
  4. A Greek feast at a restaurant called Anogi in Santorini.
  5. The carvery at our local pub!

Food is such an important part of travelling for me! Great idea for a thread Smile

Oh yes, the fish and chip shop on the harbour in Ullapool. I watched the fishing boats come in, saw the shop man but the fish and ate it weighing about 15 mins. That was over 30 years ago and I still say it was the best meal I have ever hadX

Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons

River Cafe in Brooklyn

A bizarre little fish shack by a river in Florida, watching fishermen bring in their catch - spit and sawdust place, but just the simplest, freshest food going in a fantastic setting

Bluebells in Sunningdale (sadly about to close down)

Chowder at Monk's Bar in County Clare

All of them a mix of great food and experience, whatever the scale of the setting ... loads of places do great food, but I think it's the 'experience' that makes them true favourites.

(Humph at OP's Miller & Carter - I have visited one that was fabulous, but our local one disappoints me every time.)

Cockadoodledooo · 31/08/2018 20:42

Croquembouche in Malvern. Closed now sadly.
We went to Rick Stein in Padstow a million years ago, I can't remember what the fish was like but I had bananas, meringue and custard and it was so amazing I'll never forget it.
Seafood platter at the Aval de Creux on Sark on our honeymoon. Dh managed a 3 course meal while I chowed through that lot, it was enormous!

ParkheadParadise · 31/08/2018 20:49

  3. Hawksmoor
I'll have to think about the other two!

Le Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham was our biggest treat ever.

We have a lovely little tapas restaurant round the corner.

Discovering fresh, not-out-of-a-tin salmon on a school trip to the Loire region.

Local Chinese that delivers when I really, really can’t face cooking.

MervynBunter · 31/08/2018 21:43
