WWYD - pox on holiday

Be very glad of some ideas / advice.

We have a small ish set of blisters since yesterday on DC who is 3. Assume they're chicken pox.

We're in a family resort in the canaries, staying here until Wednesday.

What do I do?

Quarantine in room for the duration?

Keep distance from others but otherwise carry on largely as usual? Including attending breakfast with other guests, play in pool, eat in restaurants in evenings etc?

I feel like if it was only about passing it on to other kids, some people would say just keep distance from others and hope for the best. But what about pregnant women etc? People at risk of more than just a few days of itching / illness?

Also do I tell the resort? Do I tell the travel operator? Airline?

Quarantine Sad

You need to tell the rep, you might not be able to fly home.

LIZS · 31/08/2018 10:45

You need to isolate and if you booked with to tell the rep or hotel management otherwise so other guests can be warned. They may be able to arrange room service for you so someone can stay with your ill child or could another adult bring food to you. Have other dc had it? You may need to notify your insurer in case he cannot fly home on time.

StarfishSandwich · 31/08/2018 10:45

Are you sure it’s not heat rash, insect bites or an allergy? Definitely worth getting a confirmed diagnosis before you put your whole holiday on hold!

Your insurance should cover this scenario, first step would be to speak to the holiday rep as she'll be able to tell you what their policy is re: flights and accommodation.

Quarantine in the room, just like you'd quarantine at home, and let the hotel know as they should be able to arrange for food/drinks to be taken to the room from the restaurant at mealtimes (presuming you're all inclusive, if you're self-catering then you or DH can go out to get food and bring it back for your DD).

This is all presuming that it's CP, they could just as easily be bites or a reaction to something. If it's CP you'll generally know it because they'll be fluid filled blisters and they'll spread fairly quickly.

Can you post a pic?

meladeso · 31/08/2018 10:47

Thanks for the replies. Will try to get a pic hang on.

I’d see a doctor in the resort and get a proper diagnosis. If it’s not chickenpox, you’d be wrecking your child’s holiday and possibly delaying your return flight for nothing.
Meanwhile, keep the child’s skin as cool as possible. Pox blisters spread far more in warm skin, due to the increased blood flow. There was an interesting paper where kids were dressed in one legged trousers and one armed jumpers, and the blisters counted daily on each limb!

CherieBabySpliffUp · 31/08/2018 10:52

That looks like chicken pic too me, sorry.

LIZS · 31/08/2018 10:52

Where are they? Does look like cp.

meladeso · 31/08/2018 10:53

The first pic is near arm pit, one on forehead and one on shin. There are about 6 on tummy and back each.

No other symptoms, been well and happy and still is. Great appetite etc.
Ok will go talk to hotel and see about a doctor. X

I'd say it's chicken pox see a local doctor to be sure my little one had it when we went Butlins luckily they had crusted over. You won't be able to fly until the blisters have crusted over unfortunately. Yes you'll need to stay in the room it sucks!! Good luck op! How many of you are on holiday?

meladeso · 31/08/2018 11:17

We're a family of 4

MrsMotherHen · 31/08/2018 11:22

meladeso · 31/08/2018 11:22

There's only 5 days left so it'll affect t completely!

EwItsAHooman · 31/08/2018 11:33

Has your other DC had them? If they have then you and DH could tag team, one stay in quarantine with the poxy DC and the other take non-pox DC out then switch round so that some of the holiday is salvaged at least.

HighwayDragon1 · 31/08/2018 11:36

Complete quarantine I'm afraid. No being in general public at all, no swimming, no going to the restaurant anything. Agree with the above poster, tag-team with DH. You may not be allowed to fly either.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 31/08/2018 11:41

That totally sucks for you Sad

People are right though, see a doctor, inform your insurer and tag team going out.

EwItsAHooman · 31/08/2018 11:44

If there's a shop selling inflatables nearby see if they have a small paddling pool or even one of those little inflatable boats. Fill it with water and around half a cup of baking soda or some oats in a sock and let DC play in it to relieve the itch, balcony or bathroom would be the best place to put it. DN got a sick bug on holiday once and spent two happy days playing in a paddling pool on the balcony while quarantined.

Stupomax · 31/08/2018 12:45

If your other child hadn't had CP you still have time to get him/her vaccinated. I would really recommend it once you're back home.

Figgygal · 31/08/2018 12:47

Yup looks like pox
I'd hope you can fly by Wednesday but no guarantees

Rotten luck op

SpottingTheZebras · 31/08/2018 12:50

How annoying but yes, you’ll have to stay confined to the room and might need to rearrange your flight home.
