WWYD - pox on holiday

Be very glad of some ideas / advice.

We have a small ish set of blisters since yesterday on DC who is 3. Assume they're chicken pox.

We're in a family resort in the canaries, staying here until Wednesday.

What do I do?

Quarantine in room for the duration?

Keep distance from others but otherwise carry on largely as usual? Including attending breakfast with other guests, play in pool, eat in restaurants in evenings etc?

I feel like if it was only about passing it on to other kids, some people would say just keep distance from others and hope for the best. But what about pregnant women etc? People at risk of more than just a few days of itching / illness?

Also do I tell the resort? Do I tell the travel operator? Airline?

I would have thought that being outside would reduce the risk of others catching it, but also isn’t CP one of the ones where yoirr more contagious before the spots come out? So technically he’s probably already passed it on to the people in the resort anyway! Disclaimer - my children have both had CP and I cancelled all plans and stayed quarantined throughout.

Contact your rep- get them to book you in with a doctor ASAP to get it confirmed. Hotel might send you somewhere expensive.

Speak to your travel insurance IF it is chicken pox. Keep receipts for your travel insurance.

It will all be ok.

Also, FYI for anyone reading- it's really easy to get your kids vaccinated for chicken pox in the U.K. if you have a little disposable income and can pay for it.

CottonSock · 31/08/2018 15:27

Could you hire a car from hotel and sight see a bit? There might be some areas nearby with few people around.

  • I mean driving tour, not the local theme park before I get slated. Remote picnics etc

What a bugger OP. If it's any consolation it might be a mild case, DDs had them a couple of months ago and they got away very lightly and weren't overly unwell, even DD2 who was only 8 weeks. Keeping fingers crossed that's the case for you to make things a bit easier. I echo what PPs have said about a small paddling pool and self medicating for you & your DH 😜

meladeso · 31/08/2018 15:37

cottonsock that's is bloody genius and I LOVE YOU. that's instantly cheered me up yes we could definitely do that! GrinThanksThanksStar

Waiting to talk more to insurer and travel company.

Ah sorry!! The last hour or so didn't load, I even checked Confused

ShellsBells76 · 31/08/2018 15:47

DD got the pox when we were in Spain 4 years ago, she was covered though and fairly unwell with it, the only saving grace was we were in a resort but staying in a villa.
We were allowed to fly home 5 days later than planned, her spots came out on the second day of the holiday.
I really feel for you it was very upsetting, all the doctors we saw were fantastic though and they also said she was fine to be taken out Hmm

meladeso · 31/08/2018 15:48

Beautiful no sweat! Smile

Hey Shells sort you had this too!
Out of interest, did your insurer talk about both parents needing to stay?

We had assumed to divide and conquer so elder DC makes first day back, but they started suggesting may both need to be here as little one can't leave the room or be left obviously. So maybe we'd all have to stay?

I was thinking I'd leave with the eldest as planned.

*sorry not sort

ShellsBells76 · 31/08/2018 15:59

Yes we all stayed as like you say I couldn't be there on my own if DD had to be confined to the villa, insurance were completely fine about this didn't even question us all staying.

ShellsBells76 · 31/08/2018 16:01

My older DD was most impressed at an extended holiday Grin

meladeso · 31/08/2018 16:09

I wish that were the case here! But if we can go back I think we should as eldest has school Confused

Crunchymum · 31/08/2018 16:13

You probably all need to stay? If child is quarantined then how does the remaining parent go out for supplies etc.....

I'm surprised at the Drs advice though? I've always thought MN is a bit overzealous about CP and staying away from people but its actually important that they do.

I started taking a medication that suppresses my immune system and I've never had CP. I am to call my hospital as a matter of urgency if I come into contact with anyone who has CP Shock (thankfully my kids have had it and all my siblings had it when we were young so I suspect I have some natural immunity!)

I'm just a normal woman in my 30's and you wouldn't know to look at my thay my immune system is fucked.

ShellsBells76 · 31/08/2018 16:26

Yes we had to be back for school too, our holiday was in the May half term so we missed the first 4 days of the new term.

I emailed the school copies of the doctors letters etc so they knew we weren't having a cheeky term time holiday.

I really wouldn't have wanted to be on my own.

sashh · 31/08/2018 16:47

Agree with the car for a trip out. Talk to the rep, you might find a pox immune baby sitter for a meal out with dh. Does the resort have any flats or villas? It might be in the resort's interests to move you. Good luck and hope all goes smoothly.

EwItsAHooman · 31/08/2018 17:20

Doc has said DC is fine to go out and to public places, as long as we're outside only? That we could be poolside if we keep our distance, and outdoor restaurants??

If I remember rightly, Spain vaccinated against CP as part of the childhood vaccinations so lots of people are immune.

meladeso · 31/08/2018 17:25

Yes perhaps that's his mindset but we're around tourists from the UK, France, etc. So not sure that would be safe to apply to them.

OP posts:
meladeso · 31/08/2018 17:25

Crunchy I'm sorry to hear that and yes quite - this is why we can't be too careful.

HavelockVetinari · 31/08/2018 18:00

I will be getting DS (13 months) vaccinated ASAP though - next week if he's over his cold.

meladeso · 31/08/2018 18:47
