Tell me about your dining table!

Exciting stuff I know but we are about to change our playroom back in to a dining room and I’m losing myself in a world of tables, chairs and benches!

I’d love to see what you’ve got, do you love it, and most importantly does it work for family life? There’s five of us but I’m a cm so it regularly needs to fit 7/8 plus up to 10 at Christmas and special occasions.

Extending would probably work best for us and I love oak wood in particular.

It's a round one that extends to an oval by cranking it open so that an extra leaf can be folded up and out. I really like it. Round/oval tables are more flexible for adding extra people in at Christmas etc.

Atthebottomofthesea · 30/08/2018 20:25

Mine is a 'vintage' round table with drop leafs. I occasionally think about changing it but it is perfect. I really like the roundness and it feels much nicer as a family. We can get 6 round ours.

It’s a rectangular oak table that seats 8 or up to 16 when extended for Christmas dinner.
It’s okay, it’s really just a table! I like that we can all sit round it when we need to Grin

CakeNinja · 30/08/2018 20:28

Oh, and we have benches that we keep in the shed for times when we need the extra seating.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 30/08/2018 20:29

I hadn’t thought about a round table but actually I always comment on the lovely atmosphere we get in a restaurant when they give us a round table. Annoyingly I think the space would suit a rectangular one better Sad It’s a through room and needs to push against a wall when not in use which is a massive pain.

Pretty much this one, but we have changed our chairs.

We were given ours when we got our first house 16 years ago,

SnuggyBuggy · 30/08/2018 20:31

Second hand from the 70s. It extends and you could just squeeze 8. It does the job and looks ok with a nice tablecloth.

Atthebottomofthesea · 30/08/2018 20:31

My one nicely pushes out the way as you just drop the leaf.

Chairs just go around the edge.

RossPoldarksFloozie · 30/08/2018 20:36

Mine is similar to this but seats 8. Our kitchen is a traditional farmhouse kitchen and we don't have a separate dining room.

As Atthebottomofthesea says, a drop leaf would give you the sociability of a round table (everyone can see everyone else) with the ability to push it against a wall. With the leaves dropped it would take up less room than a similar sized rectangular table.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 30/08/2018 20:51

Ours is nearly 90 years old with pull out extensions on each end. Unextended it will seat 6, with both leaves out it will do 12.

We mostly use it for lunch during the week, big family meals and playing games.

sliceoflife · 30/08/2018 20:52

Mine was my grandmother’s. She probably bought it not long after she got married in 1932. I think it is oak, but old fashioned dark wood oak, not trendy pale oak. I have it in the kitchen covered with a pvc tablecloth. It is square with pull out leaves to make a large rectangle and seats 8 comfortably.
I remember eating my Christmas dinner every yes round it with all my cousins from about the age of 4. It seemed so much bigger then. Now my children remember the same with their cousins.
Strange to think my dad, me and my children all banged our heads on the corners as toddlers.
My dad’s christening gown and mums wedding dress were cut out and sewn on it.

It has served as a buffet table for family weddings, funerals, anniversaries and birthdays for over 80 years. Family conferences have been held around it, home work has been done at it. Visiting family who have forgotten all about it are always pleased to see it still being used when they come to see us.
It might not be fashionable or stylish, but I could never part with it.

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 30/08/2018 21:12

Mine is a vintage g-plan teak oval with six chairs, extends to fit 8 but could probably squeeze ten! Bought it in Feb when we moved into our forever home so haven't had a Christmas with it yet but I can't wait!

Picture shows it with four of the chairs the day it was delivered (just before we moved in).

I have the-upholstered the chairs in a beautiful muted rainbow geometric fabric which matches other decor in the house. Bloody love my table!

ScreamingValenta · 30/08/2018 21:28

The wood is a lovely colour on yours, Chanandler.

MiddlingMum · 30/08/2018 21:35

sliceoflife your table sounds fantastic, a part of the family. So much history connected with it. We have a chair with a similar sort of history, although different events connected with it.

Our dining table was hand-made especially for the room it's in. We drew a plan of the room and took it to a specialist cabinet-maker company. Cost an absolute fortune but I think it's going to have its own history eventually. The DC remember me putting a huge blanket over it on rainy days to make a cave and eating their tea in there by torchlight.

Bandol · 30/08/2018 21:36

My dining table was bought in Ikea 15 years ago for £125.
Normally seats 4, with one extension leaf seats 6-7, and with 2 leaves 8-10.
Beach finish (was the fashion 15 years ago) and starting to look a bit shabby, but considering what we paid for it and the amount of use it has had it has been amazing.

Currently I'm happy to have a dining table that I'm not too fussed about. It will be replaced when the DCs are older and not using it for craft projects.

aurorie11 · 30/08/2018 21:41

Love my dining table. It’s solid oak and fits 6, 8 or 10 dependent on whether it’s extended or not. Have 10 chairs, table is very tactile. Very heavy, handmade no glue and it wasn’t cheap £2000 for the table but will last a lifetime and should become an heirloom.

BretonStripe · 30/08/2018 21:48

We got ours from Oak Furniture Land when we moved to our forever home a few years ago. Came with a free matching mirror. I love it, tho is covered with a wipe-clean tablecloth most of the time (damn kids!). Love taking the cloth of for special occasions and seeing the wood.

It's this one but think we have the 6ft which seats 10 (handy at Christmas).

Mine is an old oak Victorian (I think) table that can extend to seat 20+. It’s a bit of a family heirloom and actually has a name. We don’t quite have the room for it in our new house but it’s not going anywhere!

feliciabirthgiver · 30/08/2018 22:05

I love our extending dining table, it really works for day to day and for special occasions. Check out Oak Furniture Superstore for some ideas and some good deals.

Notasyoungasiwas · 30/08/2018 22:06

Ours is a solid oak rectangular table. Can seat eight easily and ten at a squeeze. We’ve had it for years and bought it locally. I love it!

Dowser · 30/08/2018 22:14

Mine is black glass.rectangular
Seats 6
White trim around it
Big white 0 In The centre that holds it up on a black glass base with white trim
