Bless me or pardon me when sneezing?

When other people sneeze I usually say bless you, if I sneeze I say bless me. Always have done, probably because my parents do too.

DP says pardon me if he sneezes Confused

Just curious as to what's the norm for people?

I am in no way religious so saying bless me isn't a religious thing for me, it's only just occurred to me recently that it might even be construed as a religious thing? Grin

Yes it comes from the plague. Sneezing was one of the earliest symptoms.

I say Bless you/Excuse me

LonginesPrime · 29/08/2018 21:59

Excuse me.

CherryBlossom23 · 29/08/2018 21:59

I find it annoying that we have sayings for sneezing. We don't with coughing. With a burp or a fart it's just"excuse me" with no blessings stowed.

There used to be a belief that when you sneezed your heart momentarily stopped for a (mili) second. You were "blessed" to ensure your heart started beating again

ShatnersBassoon · 29/08/2018 22:01

Excuse me. I'm a multi-sneezer, and can cause awkwardly lengthy interruptions.

CherryBlossom23 · 29/08/2018 22:02

I usually use the Spanish version "Jesús" (hay-zeus) to bless myself when I'm alone, just because it makes me smile..

DramaAlpaca · 29/08/2018 22:04

Excuse me

Smidge001 · 29/08/2018 22:04

I don't think you can bless yourself? I'd feel v uncomfortable saying bless me, even though I'm not religious! I think it just sounds a bit self important/selfish! Grin
So I say bless you, but pardon or excuse me.

MrsJayy · 29/08/2018 22:07

I say Bless you, excuse me I think its weird to bless yourself Grin

Monday55 · 29/08/2018 22:11

I always say excuse me after a sneeze, don't see why bringing germs into the world should be blessed or am I missing something ??

HannahnotAgnes · 29/08/2018 22:12

I say Bless you / bless me

Smidge001 · 29/08/2018 22:14

Monday55 it was because sneezing was one of the first signs of the plague. So if a person sneezed, someone would bless them in the hopes they would be saved

JW1226 · 29/08/2018 22:14

I stay silent after I sneeze and wait to be blessed 😂

Bless you I say If someone sneezes.

My DD says bless you if someone coughs 🙈🤦🏻‍♀️

MrsJayy · 29/08/2018 22:14

It is meant to be prayer power so death and germs doesn't get you

SpinningBob · 29/08/2018 22:17

I say 'bless your cotton socks!' No idea why! Blush

Silentnighttwo · 29/08/2018 22:17

“Bless you” if someone else.

Generally fumble for a tissue if it’s me sneezing.

KitNCaboodle · 29/08/2018 22:18

I say bless me, although I know this isn’t the norm. I say bless you to others sneezing.

MrsJayy · 29/08/2018 22:21

Aww my gran used to say Bless your cotton socks ☺

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 29/08/2018 22:22

I stopped saying "bless you" a few years ago because it annoyed me and it's pointless, and other people sneezing gets on my nerves.

I will say "excuse me" if I've caused a bit of a disturbance with my sneezing. I'm another multi-sneezer.

BertrandRussell · 29/08/2018 22:23

Excuse me or pardon me if you sneeze. Bless you if someone else does. Bless me is sort of ironic/joky...

Aspenfrost · 29/08/2018 22:28

Excuse me.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 30/08/2018 00:03

I say excuse me if I sneeze or cough.

Pardon me if I burp.

Bless you if someone else sneezes.

Itchytights · 30/08/2018 00:05

Excuse me for me
Bless you for someone else

NotUmbongoUnchained · 30/08/2018 00:10

I thought “bless me” was something 6 year olds say when they’re trying to be funny?

Where I come from you don’t say anything, it would be rude too.

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 30/08/2018 02:19

Love bless your cotton socks Grin
