Can’t decide if I like them or not really !!

I wouldn't enjoy it for more than a few days but yes I love city breaks, even those cities that are close to home. I loved it in Amsterdam - there was the museums, the canal tours, the shopping, the library, the galleries, the market. There's so much more to do, see, eat and drink in a city than in a beach resort. It also ties in really well with my hobby.

Anywhere can be boring if you don’t enjoy what’s on offer...we tend to mix it up because we’d get bored with the same thing, same place. Do what you like to do...there’s no right or wrong way to take a break.

If you stay in the UK most cities look exactly the same. All the chains are there and in some cases in the same order. (Wh Smiths is next to Boots etc)

I have lived or had extended stays in most cities in the UK (dp moved around for work). Got quite confusing when you can't distinguish between one city centre and another

I agree Retail can be very repetitive in the Uk high street and if that’s the kind of shopping you like then UK cities are probably not for you. But I think Glasgow as a city looks and feels very different to Edinburgh and Cambridge feels very different to Norwich. One of favourite visits to London included a stroll around the back streets of Nottinghill and coming across a shop dedicated to dressing your table - the opulence was intriguing and hugely enjoyable to see into how some people choose to spent the money, we then popped into an expensive kitchen shop and dreamt of shiny things followed by a very lovely lunch in a surprisingly reasonable neighbourhood bistro - Oxford Street it was not!

I too live rurally and love the buzz of city breaks. I often prefer non-capitals to explore Valencia, Gothenburg, Salzburg, Bergen, Krakow. I love exploring, using local transport systems, drinking coffee in pavement cafes but rarely shop. In Gothenburg it was swimming in a glass bottomed pool 22 stories up and visiting the fish market and archipelago. In Salzburg it was attending a concert where Mozart had played and taking a cable car up into the mountains for hot chocolate and streusel after a breathtaking walk plus a palace with trick water gardens that made us giggle. In Bergen it was waking up to snow and a cruise to the fjords where we drank water from the waterfall. All very different from the England’s green and pleasant lands where we live. The world has so much to explore, what’s not to like?

Tiring but not boring. My favourite thing to do is visit a good museum.

For all those who have been to venice, is it pushchair friendly?

We took a pushchair to Vanice. I can still remember, some 7 years on, the co start bending down to pick it up to carry it over the bridges every 5 minutes. If you need to take a pushchair, make sure it's a lightweight one!

Malaga city is perfect for a city break, the beach is a short walk away too. Lovely to stroll around, you get to see real Spanish life. I've been loads and I still love it, always find new areas to explore.

co start? Constant! Sorry....Blush

Etino · 31/08/2018 10:03

I just love being on holiday. Blush
I’m energised by 30,000 steps a day ‘dawn til dusk 2 museums 3 meals and a 2 theatre trip’ breaks and ‘relaxed buffet breakfast day by the pool 8 novels and lots of sunbathing and food, oops I’ve put on a stone’ longhaul AI. I like camping and walking holidays and city breaks and sun and sand and skiing and overnight trains and longhaul and driving holidays. Never been on a cruise or a safari though.

Doesn't it depend on the city?
