Can’t decide if I like them or not really !!

On the bit boring side, here! As a PP says, unless they are unique, I do find they all merge into one a bit. Exceptions are New York and Reykjavik (but I don't really consider Reykjavik a city break really as it's so much more than that!). I much prefer natural landscapes whether that be a stunning beach, countryside, mountains etc.. One of my all-time favourite places is Iceland as it's just so different. And so much to do!

dingdongdigeridoo · 28/08/2018 10:40

They’re definitely something I miss from pre-DC life. Even just wandering round somewhere new with different architecture and exploring shops and cafes is enough to keep me happy. I enjoy just soaking up the atmosphere of a new place. But I’m not adverse to a nice week by the pool either. I’ll take any kind of holiday.

amusedbush · 28/08/2018 11:12

I love city breaks - we don't do any other type of holiday. I don't like the beach and I can't stand lounging around in the sun, I get so bored.

maxthemartian · 28/08/2018 11:19

City breaks, scenery, beach... anything but camping really! All good.

SoyDora · 28/08/2018 11:45

Urgh yes. Definitely no camping.

SerenDippitty · 28/08/2018 11:54

Not at all, love them. Sun lounger holidays not really my thing unless on a cruise.

feesh · 28/08/2018 11:56

I hate them. But I don’t parricularly like or have much interest in humans. Wildlife is where it’s at for me!

wizzywig · 28/08/2018 11:56

Im the same as a few others. I live rurally, i love being in cities. It recharges me. For all those who have been to venice, is it pushchair friendly?

Oliversmumsarmy · 28/08/2018 12:01

City breaks in this country. Definitely not. They all look the same.

Can see going to Barcelona, Paris or Venice would be good but by the time I get on holiday all I want to do is lie on a beach and dry my bones out.

Isentthesignal · 28/08/2018 12:22

We love city breaks - they are our favourite type of holiday - even the kids love them! Wasn’t so keen on Venice - it felt like Venice only existed for tourists, food was poor and the streets were over crowded. Currently in Porto - would recommend staying in Foz, a lovely seaside suburb and travelling into Porto by tram or bus to have a look around.

Coconutcake0 · 28/08/2018 12:36

I loathe the city. Im a country girl and when i get to the city I’m desperate to leave. Too many people and noise.

I find the same with beach/pool resorts, they get a bit samey whatever country you’re in. I like beaches, but in their natural unspoiled state. Not crammed with loungers and lined with beach bars.

runningkeenster · 28/08/2018 13:14

I think it depends on the city. They can be very tiring, lots of walking around on hard pavements!

Maybe look for something a bit different and off the main tourist trail eg if you are looking at Berlin consider Hamburg instead or if you are considering Vienna try Graz instead or instead of Verona try Bologna etc.

I don't like beaches, I'm bored after 10 minutes (if it takes that long) but I like a variety of things. A parkrun is a bonus and one that is coming to a lot of overseas cities now from Australia to the US to Germany to Russia. Good places to eat, maybe somewhere to go cycling, and some scenery in the area eg Verona is good because you have Lake Garda close by or if you go to Munich you have the Alps within easy reach. I am not into castles/churches/art galleries, I prefer just wandering around taking in the atmosphere.

One of the reasons we like going to Jersey so much is because you get everything: culture/nice places to eat/beaches/countryside/shopping etc all in one small place.

CormoranStrike · 28/08/2018 13:18

Totally - well I suppose it depends on the city.

I adore Rome, quite like Paris, find UK cities to be too much like home.

RedneckStumpy · 28/08/2018 13:18

I would say in general city’s are boring, there is never much to do other than shop or eat. Generally they are also expensive.

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/08/2018 13:36

You must have been to some strange cities with no museums, castles, palaces, interesting architecture, historial buildings, nice walks, parks, fountains etc Stumpy

I doubt the visitors to Paris, Granada, Budapest, Valetta, Rome etc are there for the shopping, or are you the poster from the other day, who was going to Barcelona to buy a winter coat?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/08/2018 13:52

I'd say not. I don't think I'd take kids there, or any of the cities where art is particularly important (even adults may get Madonna and child surfeit).

IrenetheQuaint · 28/08/2018 14:00

Venice is full of steps and bridges so I'd say not pushchair friendly!

Yes indeed Errol - I once overdosed on Madonnas in Siena and had to spend the afternoon lying in a darkened room.

SoyDora · 28/08/2018 14:05

Ive been on loads of city breaks and never done any shopping!

LostInShoebiz · 28/08/2018 14:23

Love a holiday in a city, can’t stand rushing around to do everything in two or three days.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/08/2018 15:56

City breaks are ideal for couples and should definitely factor in time for afternoons in darkened rooms.Grin

Roseandvioletcreams · 28/08/2018 16:50

Love love love them!!

Short, sweet, big dose of culture, everything close together.

DC2018 · 28/08/2018 16:53

I prefer a resort near cultural sites or a historic town. That way you get a beach relaxing holiday with the opportunity to explore nearby and visit interesting sights. Places like Malta are the best of both worlds IMO x

Kezzie200 · 28/08/2018 16:57

I love them but I live in a coastal tourist resort. I love home too but I enjoy the contrast. Cities offer choices you dont get rurally and, London in particular, has access to amazing museums, gallaries and entertainment.

I love coming home too, thats true.

TheMonkeyMummy · 28/08/2018 16:58

We love them. Always get the bus tour first and take it from there. Happy days
