Would you prefer to go on holiday and stay in a luxury hotel for one week or two weeks in a more standard hotel

The more standard hotel would still have air con fridge pool etc

Think of it as more of a five star or three star break

With or without young children? Without - luxury, with - standard.

MyAuntyBadger · 28/08/2018 08:27

I would prefer two weeks if the hotel was still clean and comfortable, with decent bathroom and bed. Will you spend a lot of time in the hotel? Or will you be sight seeing/ at the beach? Probably depends if you're all inclusive too.

profpoopsnagle · 28/08/2018 08:27

Depends where and what you want from it. If there's a lot to sightsee in the area, a 3 star is fine as you'll be out a lot. If you want to rest and read by the pool, go 5 star.

PattiStanger · 28/08/2018 08:37

Not enough info to say, as long as the hotel was OK it wouldn't necessarily be a big factor for me

LardLizard · 28/08/2018 08:45

Sorry with children in a place where you will be out most of the time

With my DC when they were younger I'd have gone for the shorter holiday regardless as I found holidays not much fun but maybe your situation is different.

noenergy · 28/08/2018 09:00

With the children a week is enough.

But generally if we stay in the hotel doing an all inclusive then we do 5 star.

If it's more sightseeing then we stay somewhere cheaper as we are out the most. But it still has to be clean.

proudestofmums · 28/08/2018 09:03

As people have said it depends. If the hotel is really just somewhere to sleep then standard would do - or even.b & b - with the huge bonus of the longer break. IF the hotel is part of the holiday then maybe the 5 star.

Actually DH and I had a significant anniversary this year and thought of going somewhere incredibly expensive in PAris for maybe 3 nights but then realised we could get a fortnight in our favourite place in all the world for the same price, so we went for that. After all, when you;re home are the most enduring memories going to be of the flash fittings in the hotel or of what you did on the holiday?

fussychica · 28/08/2018 09:24

proudestofmums where is you favourite place in the world?

BigSandyBalls2015 · 28/08/2018 09:26

If al inclusive def the nicer hotel. 3* all inclusive food can be grim

LeavingInk · 28/08/2018 09:29

Luxury. I don't even have to think

pitterpatterrain · 28/08/2018 09:31

Can you do 4 nights in the cheaper then 2-3 nights in the more expensive or something like that?

I find staying in the same place for 2 weeks pretty dull so would prefer to move around and end on a high as such (more luxury, spa etc)

SD1978 · 28/08/2018 09:34

With kids and usually out- 2 weeks cheaper. If I wanted a personal break, and didn't plan to leave the hotel/room- would consider the more expensive.

proudestofmums · 28/08/2018 09:36

Ooh Fussy - my first response ever on Mumsnet! ( I haven’t been on long tbf!)

My favourite place - a little corner of Bavaria high in the mountains. Wanna go back - now (metaphorically drums heels on floor and screams)

Plumsofwrath · 28/08/2018 09:39

Why pay more for the hotel if you’re going to be out all day? As long as the 3* is spotless, I’d stay there and save the £££ for a luxury weekend away for just you and DH

leccybill · 28/08/2018 09:40

Def a week in the 5*. Two weeks is too long for me anyway, I always try and get 10/11 nights.

ShanghaiDiva · 28/08/2018 09:48

three star is fine as I don't generally spend much time in the hotel and would prefer to eat at a different restaurant each night rather than stay in the hotel.

thecatsthecats · 28/08/2018 09:53

I find a week isn't quite long enough for me in a location where I can both relax and sightsee. The days too quickly divide into 'days out' and 'days in', and after what feels like a weekend, I already find myself anxious about how much time is left.

Ten days fits the bill for me usually. 3 planned days out before, 3 planned days of swimming and chilling reading, leaves another 3 days to play by ear when there.

In which case I would probably split it 1 week standard plus 3 days more luxurious.

Elementally · 28/08/2018 09:54

As others say it depends on the type of trip. We always intend to do 2 weeks but end up booking 1 as don't want to compromise on hotel quality and there has to be a huge difference in price to make 2 weeks the same cost as 1 when you include additional spending money.

LardLizard · 29/08/2018 08:23

No not factored in the cost of spending money that would’ve extra

OP posts:
LardLizard · 29/08/2018 08:23

Would be

OP posts:
Jeippinghmip · 29/08/2018 08:24

Two weeks.

AnnabelleLecter · 29/08/2018 08:32

Luxury for one week.

PavlovianLunge · 29/08/2018 08:43

With kids and being out all day, I’d say three star.

Also, do you work? When DP and I worked, we ‘needed’ two weeks away; the first to fully unwind, the second to make the most of being fully unwound.

Nowadays, I’d do the five star, because with holidays and hotels, I think it’s generally worth paying more and having higher quality.

Dilemmacentral · 29/08/2018 08:45

Quality over quantity. Any day.
