Please stop saying super!

My teenage nieces have been staying with me this weekend, they are really lovely girls, however, they have been driving me mad because nearly every statement/sentence, they say 'super.'

'I am super excited!'
'That is super cute.'
'It was super cheap.'

To name a small selection of examples.

OP posts:

Super(b)!

AuditAngel · 27/08/2018 18:37

I have a colleague who does this too. It drives me nuts, she is very sweet, but a bit ineffectual......

TillyVonMilly · 27/08/2018 18:38

mimibunz · 27/08/2018 18:39

This has been annoying me for a year or so. It will die an unpleasant death, don’t worry.

iklboo · 27/08/2018 18:39

A friend of DS's says 'like, really super X'. A lot. My nod & smile is becoming more twitch & grimace.

MissBax · 27/08/2018 18:40

It's super annoying !

MsHomeSlice · 27/08/2018 18:41

I love super, but I am really really super old 53 so have been using it forever

I often say superduper too, but in the sarcastic child from The Incredibles way so I don't think that counts against me Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 27/08/2018 18:46

I wonder if anyone has put together a compilation of 'Great!' 'Super!' Reggie Perrin clips you could send them?

Sitranced · 27/08/2018 19:23

It's the YouTube saying.

dudsville · 27/08/2018 19:28

I like it. Whenever I read it I hear it in a French accent, makes it more fun!

BirthdayBlueBo · 27/08/2018 19:30

I do this a lot 🙈

PankyE · 27/08/2018 19:30

OMG thank you for this!
I was going to post the exact same thing!
It's incredibly overused, dull and lacks any kind of imagination.
I bought Jamie's Italian the other day and it's full of the word "super" to describe pretty much anything.
Its insulting, frankly.
My kids watched Bill and Ted with us recently and they were so surprised by the language. I said "there was a time when Americans had a small selection of adjectives even though "bogus" and "most non triumphant" are not everyday language, they didn't stick with one adjective to describe everything!".
I detest the word "super" now.

Strongarmy · 27/08/2018 19:37

I find "amazing" very annoying as well.

PankyE · 27/08/2018 19:47

Hah! My gay friend says "AMAZING!" All the time.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/08/2018 19:53

Why do posters start these threads? I mean, "Can I ask all adults to stop saying x,y,z..." and this one, "Please stop saying 'Super'"... do they ever read their posts back and think, "What a knob!". Because I do.

People use all manner of words. Some good, some not so good. They won't stop because a thread tells them to. Just sounds ridiculous. Might make them feel a bit shit for a while though. Perhaps that was the objective? This and all the other critiquing threads.

bobstersmum · 27/08/2018 20:03

People who do this are super annoying fuckers!

wanderings · 27/08/2018 20:11

Just don't let them get their hands on "The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark".

You have been warned!

Yes, it's unlikely teenage reading, but it over-uses the S-word, back in the dark days when it was an adjective. There was a cassette that went with the book, read by Maureen Lipman, with very rounded lips for the S-word.

dudsville · 27/08/2018 20:15

Lying, I live to picture all these"stop saying" folks in a darkened room somewhere limited to "yes" and "no".

elephantoverthehill · 27/08/2018 20:46

My Ds has super uni accommodation, que him being totally unphased by it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/08/2018 20:48

Great idea, dudsville.

These threads are just like a nasty little rant about very commonplace words. Those who use them and recognise themselves as using them will feel a bit 'got at', I expect. I shudder inwardly at quite a few words and terms used but I wouldn't post about them.

The other thread's gratuitously spiteful, this one isn't yet, but I don't see what's gained from them, other than making people feel a bit crap if they're 'guilty' of using these words.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 27/08/2018 20:49

Ha, someone told me off for this the other day! I genuinely didn’t know it was a new thing. I think I say it a lot though Blush

FreshEyre · 27/08/2018 20:51

@PankyE I think we should start using 'most untriumphant' and hopefully it'll catch on.

(I still find myself saying 'Mind your robes So-crates' at the top of an escalator BlushBlushBlush)

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 27/08/2018 21:06

"Super" is NEW? Like bollocks it is.

Jim Bowen said it loads of times in his darts programs/series.

I'm very sure even, I was saying "super" back last century.

I propose that words like "Brill, Brilliant & Magic" are brought back.!

ProudThrilledHappy · 27/08/2018 21:09

Ds says awesome, I think it comes from all the american youtubers.

Everything really is AWESOME.

His new game is AWESOME. He just did an AWESOME scooter move.

Fucking awesome Angry
