Friend moving and wanting to put together a wee survival pack, what needs to go in?

Regarding Kinder eggs. You can now buy a product called a Kinder Joy that is half toy half egg.

It’s near as damn it a Kinder egg.

Missingstreetlife · 27/08/2018 14:07

Xmas pudding

Ta1kinpeace · 27/08/2018 14:12

Decent tea - when I go over I always take my own. I've NEVER found a decent brand over there.

Decent cheese - fear not statesiders, I now buy US friends their Christmas presents from here
www.murrayscheese.com/
They deliver anywhere in the US
and having just looked, now sell sausages

I've shopped at the original Murry's on Bleecker Street many times - great shop! I had no idea they were on line now, thanks! Smile

By the way, the ambiance of the store is not at all British.

Ta1kinpeace · 27/08/2018 14:47

I know, but the Cropwell Bishop is WONDERFUL Grin

Do you not like PGTips or Tetley? They're sold pretty much everywhere. Target, Walmart, most grocery stores.

The blends in the US are not the same as in the UK
goodness knows what they do to them

  • and I felt really bad for family who had carefully bought me "English tea"
but when I made a brew with my imported Yorkshire Tea bags they got the difference
pallisers · 27/08/2018 16:13

I can get everything mentioned on this thread locally. Well except for percy pigs (but I don't know what they are). we have an irish butcher about 30 mins away that does proper sausages, rashers and bacon.

I'm kind of baffled by the cheese thing. My local grocery store has 3 huge counters of cheese from all over the world, including wonderful local cheeses.

I agree that the ordinary bread - like sliced pan - is awful. Way too sweet. But the bread from the bakery department or local bakeries is usually fine.

When we emigrated what I really remember is the friends who came to the airport to see me off and the ones who wrote to me and stayed in touch especially in the first hard few weeks.

Stupomax · 27/08/2018 16:33

Ah - I'd just go to my local Shaws for those, they have a Shop the World aisle. Or the British Goods Shop.

LittleMy77 · 27/08/2018 17:56

pallisers for me its because I can't get decent cheddar without paying a kings ransom, compared to a kilo of whatever's on offer in the UK for 2.50 a kilo (or similar) I'm staying true to my northern roots and being tight Wink

MissConductUS · 27/08/2018 18:10

LittleMy77 - look for the Cabot Cheddars. They're a dairy farmers cooperative. They sell some basic cheddars, then their craft ones are in their legacy line. We love their Alpine Cheddar and it's not crazy expensive.

Cabot Cheese Legacy Collection

pallisers · 27/08/2018 22:23

yes I agree some of the cabot cheddars are very good. I miss irish butter (and cannot substitute us supermarket butter at all) but I've found Kates Homemade butter from vermont is the same as irish stuff.

And to derail the thread, I presume you have moved your son in Missconduct - hope it all went well. we moved dd in on Saturday!

Stupomax · 27/08/2018 22:24

Gosh where do you get decent cheddar for £2.50 a kilo in the UK? My family would love to know. They're also tight northern bastards Grin

LittleMy77 · 27/08/2018 22:27

Thanks miss!

stupo I basically trawl Morrisons or Sainsburys for whatever is on offer / two for the price of one deal! Its usually a cathedral cheddar affair, which lasts about 7 days if I can prise it out of DH and DS hands...

MissConductUS · 27/08/2018 22:39

I presume you have moved your son in Missconduct - hope it all went well. we moved dd in on Saturday!

DS has another week of summer fun with his pals, then we load up the Forester (with luggage carrier strapped to the roof) to drive him to college this Saturday, then he moves into his dorm on Sunday. The luggage pile seems to get a bit bigger each day. I'm not looking forward to the drive home without him...

We have a BJ's membership and get the Cabot's Alpine cheddar there. They also carry at least two brands of the Irish butter, which I have never tried. Sad

I have BJ's membership now - I've never thought to buy cheese there but I might buy this next time I'm there www.bjs.com/product/premium-c-sharp-new-york-state-creamy-cheddar-cheese/3000000000000322565.

Davros · 27/08/2018 23:26

I couldn't love without Walkers Roast Chicken crisps. It seems that many other countries do not have the fabulous range of crisp flavours we have, just had two weeks of very repetitive Plain, Paprika or Cheese.
I hope all the bacon, sausage rolls and cheese being sent away are properly packed!

Davros · 27/08/2018 23:26

Live Blush

Stupomax · 27/08/2018 23:32

Apparently we just got Lobster Roll flavor crisps. I'm going to put them right there with the Dill Pickle flavor in the Do Not Eat pile.

4forkssake · 27/08/2018 23:42

Christmas crackers

pallisers · 27/08/2018 23:50

Christmas crackers

5 years ago yes but now these are everywhere.

woodfires · 28/08/2018 01:37

The dill pickle peanuts were interesting.

OlennasWimple · 28/08/2018 13:58

Trader Joe's has Kerrygold butter and very good Westcountry cheddar

TJ Maxx has the best choice of Christmas crackers, though the Macys and the other department stores seem to improve their offering each year

Stupomax · 28/08/2018 14:02

I LOVE Trader Joes' Unexpected Cheddar. With some Branston Pickle on some Hannaford 9-grain bread from their bakery it's perfect.

LittleMy77 · 28/08/2018 17:37

I got our last christmas crackers from Pier 1 with a massive $$ reduction after Thanksgiving. I assume this is as no-one quite knows what to do with them or when to use them (going by my ILs non plussed faces every year when they put up with them to humor me and my English ways Grin)
