Yes to decent tea. I've been on holiday (vacation for the Americans among us) to America twice, and as a person who hates coffee and only drinks tea, it wasn't that nice. (Though could just be I'm so used to tea here. Perhaps if I lived there I'd get more used to it). Couldn't wait for a cup when we got home, despite the jet lag.

aperolspritzplease · 27/08/2018 08:32

Fil takes back baked beans, Branson pickle, twirls, tea, pataks curry sauces, Jacobs crackers and hp sauce. Yes he can get it there but he refuses to pay ££££.

He has now managed to find English bacon but not proper English sausages like you get in the butchers.

Mominatrix · 27/08/2018 08:32

Coriander - cilantro

SuburbanRhonda · 27/08/2018 08:37

I sad to send my aunt in NY Christmas crackers until they got banned by Royal Mail Sad

SuburbanRhonda · 27/08/2018 08:38

And I’m British but always say vacuum cleaner. Hoover is a brand name.

IamPickleRick · 27/08/2018 08:41

Posting to the US isn’t always expensive. I often send care packages to friends, if it’s a very slow service it’s not always dear.

pamplemoussed · 27/08/2018 08:42

I always have a request for Paxo stuffing when I visit a friend in the USA. It’s nice and light too!

Copperbonnet · 27/08/2018 08:49

happymummy for your next holiday, most supermarkets sell Twinnings or Tetley tea.

It depends which state you are visiting but I’ve rarely been in a restaurant or hotel in Texas that didn’t offer Twinnings Earl Grey as a tea choice.

UserX · 27/08/2018 09:06

Squash - cordial

I don’t think there is really any squash equivalent in the US. If you want to ask for a non-fizzy sweet drink go with juice, it covers all sorts of drinks that have never seen an actual fruit.

hugoagogo · 27/08/2018 09:15

Mominatrix seems to have swapped bum and fanny, which could be embarrassing.Grin

keefthebeef · 27/08/2018 09:19

My mum takes Yorkshire tea, lots and lots of tip tree jam, m&s biscuits, salt and vinegar crisps and mince meat for mince pies

Marmelised · 27/08/2018 09:26

Zovirax if you get cold sores. £5 a tube here and was over $600 on prescription when we tried to buy a few years ago. May be different in other parts of the states but took us by surprise.
I suppose health insurance covers it but still it’s not as easy as picking up a tube from off the shelf in Boots.

Mominatrix · 27/08/2018 09:39

hugo - a fanny in the US is someone's bum. We call a bum bag a fanny pack. I remember being very confused when I first came to the UK as nobody had warned me about the difference in usage.

Isentthesignal · 27/08/2018 09:41

Cornflour - corn starch

Mominatrix · 27/08/2018 09:46

Acyclovir (active ingredient in Zovirax) is prescription only in the US, as is codeine.

80sMum · 27/08/2018 09:51

Things may have changed in the 20 years since I have been there, but we found that we couldn't get proper sausages anywhere.

There were plenty of frankfurters, salami, kielbasa etc and some disgusting monstrosities masquerading as sausages and known as 'links' but nowhere could we find actual sausages!

Mominatrix · 27/08/2018 09:56

Sausages are definitely different - more German, Polish, or Italian in style.

PinkFluffyFairy · 27/08/2018 09:58
