How cold is it in Scotland at the moment?

We’re setting off in an hour for a family stay in the Highlands. I’ve packed fleeces and waterproofs but will we need coats? We’re in the Midlands and it has been so warm here that we’re still in shorts and sundresses.

It's very cold on a night time and some times in the day. You will def need coats

LoniceraJaponica · 26/08/2018 07:17

You must have a specific microclimate where you are as the weather has cooled down a lot everywhere else the last few days.

What does the online forcast say?

TooTrueToBeGood · 26/08/2018 07:22

East coast just south of Aberdeen here. Currently raining and it's been cool enough the past few days we've toyed with putting the heating on but haven't yet. Definitely bring a jumper and waterproof jacket. Better to have and not need than need and not have.

adaline · 26/08/2018 07:49

I'm about an hour from the Scottish border and it's bloody cold here. I've worn my coat to walk the dog the last few mornings and evenings - it's definitely a lot cooler!

Herja · 26/08/2018 07:51

I'm going at the end of next week. I asked a friend in the highlands, said it's been around 9 °c, colder at night time.

theunsure · 26/08/2018 07:54

Do you not have a weather app?

MrsPotts18 · 26/08/2018 07:56

I'm in the east and we have heating on! Very wet today too but last week we've had to wear jumpers/coats

Buzzlightyearsbumchin · 26/08/2018 07:59

Highlands here. It's freezing. My heating has been on for days.

SingingMyOwnSpecialSong · 26/08/2018 07:59

South East here, summer dresses one minute and jumpers, tights and waterproofs the next. Bring everything.

Heismyopendoor · 26/08/2018 08:03

We are further down, west central Scotland. It’s been about 10c and very wet for the past week. Colder at night. Obviously there is quite a big difference location wise (Scotland is one wee tiny place) but I imagine it’s colder so would suggest you bring a water proof coat

SaveFerris1 · 26/08/2018 08:03

I'm north of Aberdeen and driving home last night it was 5 degrees. We actually might have to switch the heating on Shock

Heismyopendoor · 26/08/2018 08:03

Haha Scotland is NOT one tiny wee place!!

Mossend · 26/08/2018 08:04

If you've been used to wearing sundresses etc I think you're going to find it cold.

I've reluctantly put my flip flops away for this summer and will be wearing socks and boots when I go out today

schooltripwoes · 26/08/2018 08:05

Can't help you with an exact answer but as it's chuffing freezing in Devon at the moment (9 degrees C yesterday evening), I'd assume that The Highlands are positively frozen and dress accordingly.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 26/08/2018 08:05

Where in the Highlands are you going? I’m in the Highlands and the dc are still wearing shorts and t-shirts although it has been cooler. Ds2 and I were out all day yesterday in the woods for an activity and were fine in just jumpers. Where I am it been warmer than 9 degrees.
Been cooler through the night than it has been but certainly not cold.

Knitjob · 26/08/2018 08:07

I turned our heating on last night. It was warm and sunny enough for a thin jumper during the day but needed a thicker fleece in the evening.

I would pack jumpers and a raincoat.

DrWhy · 26/08/2018 08:08

Heating on here in NE Scotland yesterday but honestly, you’d be much better of the actually look at the weather forecast for the place you are staying and pack based on that!

Herja · 26/08/2018 08:09

9°c was about 40 miles out of inverness.

Igneococcus · 26/08/2018 08:12

Oban area, about 12C at the moment and steady, but not heavy, rain.

lastqueenofscotland · 26/08/2018 08:25

Where abouts in the highlands? Varies wildly

MeetOnTheLedge · 26/08/2018 08:29

My rule of thumb for going to Scotland in August is to pack as if it was late Sept at home (live in SE England). So layers, trainers and socks as well as sandals, more than one cardigan or hoody, definitely needed for evenings if not daytime. Waterproofs.

lostlalaloopsy · 26/08/2018 08:35

I'm just north of Inverness and it's really cold and wet today. But it's meant to be better through the week. I would advise you take jackets!!

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 26/08/2018 08:39

I'm in Glasgow and we're wearing just jumpers. I wouldn't away on holiday anywhere in Scotland without packing a coat though! The weather can be very changeable and you'll want to have the option.

NotSoThinLizzy · 26/08/2018 08:39

In the really far north of highlands and it's getting cold we've had to put heating on for the past couple of days the rain has been sideways 😂

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 26/08/2018 08:41

"Scotland in August is to pack as if it was late Sept at home"

That's a good rule of thumb. It is more Autumney here. Kids are back at school and everything. Summer's like a distant memory.
