Do you ever use the higher temperature options on your washing machine <DULL THREAD KLAXON>

I washed my dog's bed on the highest temperature yesterday and it occurred to me that i've never used that setting before. We do our regular washing on 40 degrees or 60 if something is unusually filthy.

So it made me wonder if anybody ever uses those higher temperatures and if so, what for? I'm basically wondering if i'm missing a trick and that washing my towels at 95 will make them extra fluffy etc? Obviously, before anybody says it, i'm eco minded and won't be boil washing everything I own. Just curious about occasional uses?

What say you, wise MNetters?

I wash all bedding at 60 because of allergies. I don't really see any benefit to higher temperatures than that.

NannyR · 25/08/2018 15:15

I only use it every couple of months when I do a maintenance wash to keep the machine clean. For my everyday laundry I use 30, occasionally 40, everything comes out looking and smelling clean and fresh so I don't see the point of using a higher temperature.

hungryhippie · 25/08/2018 15:15

I do my towels at 90 degrees and any bedding if one of the kids has been sick or wet the bed. Tea towels on 60 and anything visibly soiled. everything else on 40.

MountDiogenes · 25/08/2018 15:15

I wash everything on 30 or 40. I have heard it doesn't kill all germs but it doesn't seem to do us any harm

bonzo77 · 25/08/2018 15:16

Almost never. Most laundry done at 30 or 40. I used the 90 deg once when the kids got worms. And to clean the machine.

MountDiogenes · 25/08/2018 15:16

Oh i do a maintenance wash on the highest temp occasionally

sdaisy26 · 25/08/2018 15:17

Nope I wash pretty much everything on 30, sometimes 40. I’m not sure I’ve ever even used 60.

SneakyGremlins · 25/08/2018 15:19

Everything on 60 but I have sensitive skin. When I put through some Dr Beckmann's it says 60 but I put it on 90 to clean and it still works.

Ohyesiam · 25/08/2018 15:21

60 for towels, tea cloths and bedding, 30 for everything else

BossWitch · 25/08/2018 15:22

Realised a few weeks ago (headlice outbreak) that my new machine doesn't go above 60. I was quite miffed!

GoneWishing · 25/08/2018 15:22

I use 60 a lot (allergies and habit), and the occasional maintenance wash on 90. No idea if there's any need for the 90 really.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 25/08/2018 15:25

Usually 40
30 if the label says so (usually)
Ignore pants labels for kids and DH from time to time and do occasaionaly on 60 just because
Do the towels occasionally on 60 as well usually 40
I did a 95 wash yesterday for the microfibre cloths used for cleaning that are supposed to somehow be re-jigged by having a good hot wash with no washing powder - that's rare though I usually do on 40

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 25/08/2018 15:26

Bedding, towels and underwear at 60, once every few months I do an empty 95 wash with a cupful of white vinegar.

Methe · 25/08/2018 15:32

I was my disgusting sons pants on 90° if there’s skid marks in them 🤮

Use 60° for bedding and towels from time to time.

Normally wash everything on 40°

SneakyGremlins · 25/08/2018 15:35

Boss What?

ineedaholidaynow · 25/08/2018 15:36

Towels on 90, pretty much everything else on 40 unless need delicates wash

BossWitch · 25/08/2018 15:42

Yep. No setting goes above 60. I had thought the 'baby' setting would be the super hot one, but that's basically just another delicate cycle at 30. Very disappointing!

Laniakea · 25/08/2018 15:45

bedding & towels on 60 everything else on 40. I do use 90 occasionally - e.g. pet stuff & anything that has been puked on.

I hardly every use 30.

Celticrose · 25/08/2018 15:49

Mostly 40 (use Napisan for underwear etc) 60 for towels, tea towels and dishcloths . Have started the odd 50 wash. My guilty pleasure is I get my bedding laundered washed dried and ironed. Bliss

lynmilne65 · 25/08/2018 16:01

90 blows my fuses!!

Deathraystare · 25/08/2018 17:34

I am surprised at how much bedding stuff (not necc sheets) is 40 deg and had a mattress topper that was spot clean only. I have since chucked it.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 25/08/2018 18:24

Everything seems to be mad low these days.

DH socks at 30! How can 30 be enough for a grown man's socks???

Ditto his exercise gear 30 WTF

NothingOnTellyAgain · 25/08/2018 18:25

They end up chucked in at 40 and if stuff shrinks I say read the fucking label next time 30 for socks is ludircous.

Witchend · 25/08/2018 19:49

60 for ds' sheets (allergies)
40 for extra dirty/other sheets
30 almost everything else.

I used to use 95 for the children's nappies, but I don't think I've used it since then.

shutupandgotosleep · 25/08/2018 20:54

90 for the kids school shirts (wtf thought white shirts for primary school kids was a good idea?), my white bedding and anything with serious amounts of puke/poo on it.

60 for wee, tea towels, towels and bedding.

40 for most other things

30 for the more delicate stuff.

I've tried washing the whites on a lower temperature but they go dingy after a while
