Is a scotch egg or quiche old fashioned food?

Watching Celebrity Masterchef, a young man on there had eaten quiche once as a child but had never eaten a scotch egg.

Are these old fashioned dishes now? Out of favour?

I dunno but it's not a picnic without a scotch egg.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 25/08/2018 14:51

They are old fashioned yes. I still eat them all the time though.

OliviaStabler · 25/08/2018 14:52

I love quiche Blush

Yes, very old fashioned, although scotch eggs were found for a while on menus if they were made with quail eggs and black pudding, or things like that. I bloody love scotch eggs!

Iloveacurry · 25/08/2018 14:53

I love both!

theunsure · 25/08/2018 14:54

Scotch eggs are fashionable again! They go in and out. I had an amazing one in a michelin starred place earlier this year.
Quiche is standard-but I’d not describe either as old fashioned.

MrsMarigold · 25/08/2018 14:54

I thought they were having a revival in hip circles.

CakeNinja · 25/08/2018 14:55

Probably are old fashioned and I don’t like either of them!

SuperstarDJ · 25/08/2018 14:56

I always buy a quiche as part of the weekly shop. Am partial to a scotch egg too. Retro rather than old fashioned Grin

PinkHeart5914 · 25/08/2018 14:57

I guess they are foods that have been around for a long time but back in fashion now?

I’ve lost count of the number of restaurants I’ve been too where a warm scotch egg with a slightly runny yolk has been one of the starter options.

Quiche is always in all the artisan bakeries round here so must be a good seller

Scotch egg is still in fashion in my house...my bloody dh nabbed my last one; I should label it with my name apparently. I don't touch his haggis or black pudding, so why does he need my scotch egg (wails, as I had been hoarding it).

OliviaStabler · 25/08/2018 15:11

I had a scotch egg in a Michelin restaurant a few years ago but this guy seemed a tad perplexed by them.

Scotch eggs definitely back in fashion at posh eateries.
I love a good quiche too and have a particular fondness for dare I say it, the vol-au-vent.

Heratnumber7 · 25/08/2018 15:23

It's not a picnic without scotch egg.
Exactly.

DickensianHysteric · 25/08/2018 15:28

Recently at work we were all talking about what was for tea (it's really exciting chat in our office!). I said I was having quiche, and everyone else said, ooh quiche, haven't had that for years! I eat it all the time. Confused

AdaColeman · 25/08/2018 15:40

Scotch eggs are very trendy just now, especially made with black pudding or unusual sausage meat. Quiche never seems to go out of fashion as its got endless variations, and is an stalwart of vegetarian menus.

I'm surprised that someone interested in food as you would expect a Masterchef contestant to be, hasn't tried scotch egg.

Though I remember Jamie Oliver interviewing staff for a new restaurant when he had different foods for them to try, and several of them refused to try tempura oysters.

I suppose you can have a limited range and experience of food but still cook your "signature" dish well. I wonder what his menu was and did he win?

OliviaStabler · 25/08/2018 15:47

vol-au-vent

OH, I haven't sent one in years but I used to love them.

It is Celebrity Masterchef so assume it is more of a desire to keep his career going than a love of food.

You can get scotch eggs in my local restaurant here in the US now. They're really good too - freshly fried and served with a mustardy sauce.

My life is complete.

Quiche, beans and chips is comfort food from my childhood

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 25/08/2018 15:54

Scotch eggs seem very popular again in the handmade, artisan posh farm shop type places where they do all sorts of flavours and varieties. In fact I had one from exactly that type of place for lunch today.

Quiches seem to be less popular and have been usurped by the more upmarket sounding "tarts" e.g.. caramelized onion and goats cheese .

Scotch eggs aren't - very current and fashionable. Quiche might be; I've never eaten one.

glamorousgrandmother · 25/08/2018 16:02

I thought quiche was quite mainstream but when I told my 13 year old DGS we were having quiche he said he'd never heard of it. When I described it he said 'Oh, omelette in a pie.'.

I'm making tuna quiche this evening.

vampirethriller · 25/08/2018 16:06

I often make a quiche to use up ends of cheese and bits of veg. Can't beat itGrin

MargaretDribble · 25/08/2018 16:24

Who cares. We eat quiche a couple of times a month and I love Scotch eggs.
