Lowestoft - worth a visit?

I don't know Suffolk well so would anyone recommend Lowestoft or anywhere else on the coast around there for a few days break?

I have been to Lowestoft . Was very gritty and run down and the one way system had grand old places well past their former glory.
That was the late 90s though so might be totally different .

Southwold is very nice , but quiet so probably not the best for young DCs but again , not been in years .

SelinaMyers · 24/08/2018 19:19

Southwold is stunning! I go to Lowestoft regularly to meet friends but wouldn’t visit otherwise.

HopeClearwater · 24/08/2018 19:20

No. Full of drug addicts and rehab centres. Incredibly run down. Just don’t.

petalpower · 24/08/2018 19:21

Aldeburgh is also beautiful. Wouldn’t recommend Lowestoft.

Singlenotsingle · 24/08/2018 19:22

Lowestoft? No.

Solomonbitestheworm · 24/08/2018 19:24

No Lowestoft is quite run down, not much going on. Agree with PP Southwold, walberswick abd alderburgh are lovely. Gorleston just north of Lowestoft is quite nice now, lovely prom. Or North Norfolk. What sort of things would you be looking to do?

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/08/2018 19:25

Thank you! Kid free few days so looking for somewhere nice and preferably very quiet Smile

I’ve been completely misled by the pictures on booking.com clearly, thanks for saving me!

Will look at southwold and aldeburgh instead. Any hotel recommendations?

Yes to Southwold, aldeburgh, walberswick, dunwich, orford.

No to Lowestoft.

Cheeseplantandpickle · 24/08/2018 19:25

I used to visit as a child in the 80s and I enjoyed the rides and tacky shops. As an adult I visit Aldeburgh and Southwold.

ProfYaffle · 24/08/2018 19:25

Pleasurewood Hills is fine for younger dc, probably not teens.

Lowestoft itself - no. Anywhere on the Suffolk heritage coast is lovely. If you're looking for traditional seaside, Gorleston beach is nice and much underrated imho. I also think Great Yarmouth is surprisingly nice, lots of good museums and fireworks on Wednesdays in the summer.

ProfYaffle · 24/08/2018 19:28

Just seen that you're dc free, in that case Southwold and Aldeburgh definitely the best bet!

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/08/2018 19:29

We know north Norfolk quite well and are doing a week with the DC there so going for something in a similar area for a few days a few weeks after but as nice and quiet as possible!

Seaside/coastal but not too busy, gentle walks, couple of meals out but doesn’t have to be fancy, maybe a spa. Don’t need anything to do, I need to nap, read, walk a bit and breathe fresh air somewhere pretty and peaceful Smile

We did Yarmouth with DC earlier in the year and it was perfect for a few mad days.

We don’t get away much on our own so after a complete break miles from an arcade...

Have a look at Thorpeness. It was built in 1910 by some rich man who wanted it for his own enjoyment. Google it. It's lovely. It's got the House in the Clouds, and mock Tudor houses...oooh I might have to arrange a weekend there myself!

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/08/2018 19:36

You might have won this single oh my god it looks amazing! Never even heard of it. Thank you.

Another vote for Southwold

Daisymay2 · 24/08/2018 19:37

Lowestoft ? no
Aldborough, Snape Maltings, Woodbridge ( Sutton Hoo has its own atmosphere) Orford Ness and Southwold are lovely on or near the coast
Inland, Ipswich is quite interesting , Christchurch Park is lovely, also museum and Art Gallery and new area around the docks . Long Melford and Lavenham are gorgeous- medeval houses at every turn. I quite like Bury St Edmunds but parking is a nightmare.

Daisymay2 · 24/08/2018 19:40

Sorry missed the hotel recommendations request. I often hear the Swan at Lavenham raved over and the afternoon tea is fab! Think it might be pricey and it isn't on the coast.

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/08/2018 19:41

Amazing, thanks daisy, also like the book of Bawdsy from that list.

I went to gorleston beach in July when i was staying in norfolk. I was recommended it as being much nicer than yarmouth or lowestoft. It was a gorgeous beach with miles of sand. There was a seal too!

Aldeburgh and southwold are really lovely

CottonSock · 24/08/2018 19:48

Avoid lowestoft. All others nice..Not Yarmouth
