Do your primary school age dc have a school coat?

Obviously they have a coat to wear to school but is it specifically for school or do they just wear their normal coat?
Curious now after a conversation with friend

My daughter has a parka style coat she'll use for school and Home when it's freezing but she also has a little leather coat that she wanted so so badly and looked so cute in lol. I've never bought my kids a "home coat" and "School coat" as such. But like I always say, it's your child, do as you want with them. If you'd prefer and can afford different coats then do it. I hope your children enjoy being back at school OP.

Our school has a branded logo coat, so he has that, but also a different coat for outside school. I always think it’s useful to have a spare coat anyway.

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 23/08/2018 09:03

Astonished at all these primary schools with logo coats. Are they all academies? Mine just have coats - a good parka and a duffel.

Our uniform ones are totally optional (but no more expensive than a supermarket coat anyway and good quality or there's no way I'd have bought them) - but because of the bloody dinner lady and zip saga last year I've got them. Even SHE can't find a problem with DD2's coat if it's a chuffing school uniform one!

fruitpastille · 23/08/2018 09:17

There is a waterproof fleece with school logo that you can buy but nobody wears it. My kids have more than one coat for different weather conditions e.g. cagoule/warm winter coat but none of them are specifically for school. Usually ours are from mountain warehouse.

On another note - I would love a compulsory coat for secondary school! Kids seem to just wear a blazer all year round whatever the weather. No coat on allowed in school. Ridiculous.

PrueDent · 23/08/2018 09:20

Mine have 2 coats although neither is specifically for school. Guaranteed that within 3 or 4 days they will be filthy and will need to be washed. We couldn't manage if they had just one coat.

Growingboys · 23/08/2018 09:26

School coat and I like that because it's smart.

missyB1 · 23/08/2018 09:27

Actually having school uniform coats are a really good way of making sure the child is appropriately dressed for any weather, meaning they can take part in any activity. It saves mum or dad having to argue with the child about what coat the dc wants to wear.
Ds school logo coat is good value, I wouldn’t be spending any less than that on a coat anyway.

KoshaMangsho · 23/08/2018 09:51

Having more than one coat or a few pairs of shoes doesn’t mean they are trying to impress their peers or don’t know what’s important in life! Actually we don’t have two coats. The weather where we live is very changeable. He has a ‘fall coat’ so a light waterproof. Then he has a thick warm down coat for the winter. He also has an in between coat (thick but not down) for when we are going somewhere by car and might need it when we get off. He has a pair of school shoes, school PE shoes, trainers at home and summer sandals. He has never chosen any of these items and has zero opinion on what he wears.

Both my kids have asthma so I make sure they are very warmly wrapped up because the cold air triggers their asthma and it takes them ages to shake off a simple cough.

Ds2 has a school coat and a home coat. Only because DH picked the school branded one up for 50p at parents evening. He's chuffed with it. It's quite thin though even with the fleecy link get attached so I can see his normal coat taking over after Christmas when it tends to colder.

Ds1 has one winter parka and one raincoat. I bet he only wears the raincoat all winter and even then only if it's actually pouring Hmm

PurpleCrazyHorse · 23/08/2018 10:25

DD usually has a nice (but not expensive) coat for home that I don't really want her to lose at school and a super cheap school coat (usually car boot or charity shop). I've been buying the branded school coats in the second hand uniform sales so she'll wear one of those this year. On the plus-side, they'll also hand down to DS.

I just didn't want DD to be without a coat if she lost one at school.

theluggageslegs · 23/08/2018 10:35

Our school doesn’t have a uniform coat - thankfully, because a navy coat in winter wouldn’t be my choice in terms of road safety.
My kids just have the one coat, worn for any activity outside when it’s cold. Big enough for layers to go under when it’s very cold.

sirfredfredgeorge · 23/08/2018 10:43

How does a school coat work? Even in the temperate UK, a coat you can wear at -5 and snowing is quite different to a coat you'd wear at +15 and raining, a single school coat couldn't possibly meet those conditions.

So is it another case of these schools deliberately making the uniform impractical as a way of getting selection in a state school?

cloudtree · 23/08/2018 10:46

Our has a detachable inner bit like ski jackets do. So you could actually use it year round.

wendz86 · 23/08/2018 10:49

Same coat for normal and school.

FreeButtonBee · 23/08/2018 10:54

One coat used for home and school (boring navy) but a selection of fleeces/warm cardis and normally a bodywarmer thing as well to choose from at the weekend. Their coats wipe down pretty easily so don't often need washing

Pascha · 23/08/2018 11:22

They are like a 3-in-1 coat. Detachable inner fleece and outer shell so 15°and raining just use the outer shell, cold and dry just the fleece, cold and wet, all together. They aren't really that good in the extreme cold though. Closer to zero and I'd rather have the option of a proper winter coat.

Blazer for summer, no required in heatwaves.

Duffel for Winter.

Waterproof if required.

School fleece can be added under duffel if freezing.

MrsWombat · 23/08/2018 12:14

My one had a school coat for KS1. It lasted for 2 years and was great for Spring/Summer/Autumn but wasn't warm enough for the coldest months. It was completely optional. My youngest will also wear it.

sirfredfredgeorge · 23/08/2018 12:41

JacquesHammer That doesn't cover the 15/25 and rain situation, is there another school waterproof that is big enough to go over a blazer but not so big that it can be worn without the blazer?

Is that a state school? Blazer, Coat, Fleece and Waterproof shell certainly sounds like a route to selection via uniform cost...

School fleece + waterproof would cover the above. Or indeed just waterproof when warm. We’ve done 9 years at the school, believe me every eventuality is covered Grin

Private prep but didn’t cost us a bomb as there’s a very active new to you department!

flowercase · 23/08/2018 17:50

Interesting to see there was a mix of responses.

Ours just have a light jacket and a winter jacket that they wear for everything.
My friend was shocked that we didn't buy them coats specifically for school!

I didn't mean logo-ed coats specifically but I'm surprised so many people seem to buy them.
Our school does have them but nobody buys them except maybe in p1.
Are there state primarys where they're compulsory?

Our school ones are bright red so I liked that from a road safety view as well.
