How can I be nice to a "horse"? (And other animals.)

I met some animals in a field today. I recognised them straight away as "horses", like from the advert. A couple seemed quite friendly and walked (trotted?) over to meet me. I didn't have much of an idea on how to be nice to them. I stroked them on their faces (Very boney Confused) which I think they liked, and patted the bit between the "horses'" head and body (neck?) which the white one seemed to particularly like as it rubbed it's head on mine, drooled on my T-shirt and followed me when I went.

Did I do the right thing? Do they prefer rubbing? Scratching? Hugging?

And not just "horses". Where do you start with a goat? They have actual weaponry on their heads! Shock

Ive always wanted to sat this - are you on glue? Confused

Goldenbug · 22/08/2018 20:39

No LEM. Is there a brand you recommend I try?

Horse likes to be petted and rubbed on neck and shoulder. Some like the head rubbing as well but some will bite. Goat likes to be scratched on the back.

goforkyourself · 22/08/2018 20:43

Horses like to be scratched on their faces, or rubbed!

Racecardriver · 22/08/2018 20:44

I don't know how to be nice to a goat but if you scare it it will faint. YouTube it.

calamariqueen · 22/08/2018 20:44

Don't pat a goat, they're bastards. Sheep, similar risk. Cows, probably best avoided if you're not used to them, horses, you're doing it right 😂

If this link works it'll help..

What advert?

LEMtheoriginal · 22/08/2018 20:47

Evostick is good - i believe it is made from horses!

Actually horses can be head shy so probably best to stroke the neck area

Why were you in a field full of "horses" anyway?

Womaningreen · 22/08/2018 20:47

Lol at brand recommendation

The white one followed you, that is so lovely!

I wouldn't stroke a horse's face, just instinct says don't go near the mouth but I don't think I've ever petted a horse without asking. (The person in charge, not the horse).

alwaysiero · 22/08/2018 20:47

‘You recognised them straight away as ‘horses’....erm well done. I can’t tell if you’re on a wind up.

Goldenbug · 22/08/2018 20:48

I tried to copy what I've seen jockeys do but wasn't sure if they were patting the neck because they were to small to do the top bit by the swively bits. (Ears?)

Everybody involved seemed happy anyway.

Itchytights · 22/08/2018 20:49

What advert? Did you only know it was a horse through a horse advert?

I’m a bit baffled to be honest and sense a wind up.

RubiksQueen · 22/08/2018 20:50

Why are you saying "horses" as if you have no idea what a horse is?

Have you recently moved from a country that does not have horses??

Soubriquet · 22/08/2018 20:50

Eh? Have you never seen a horse before?

conycavy · 22/08/2018 20:51

Impressed you know the verb "trot" tbh when you're not sure if they were horses.

Goldenbug · 22/08/2018 20:51

Great chart Calamari.

I wasn't in a field of "horses" as such. It was a common so we were kind of sharing it in a species-coming-together-in-peace-and-harmony kind of way.

Bunnybigears · 22/08/2018 20:51

Why were they "horses" rather than horses? Were they cows self identifying as horses?

AmabelleOnabike · 22/08/2018 20:53

I walk a countryside walk every day. I pass cows, horses, ponies, donkeys and sheep. Occasionally dogs and cats too. Pheasants and seagulls as well. I wouldn't touch any of them (am happiest with a fence between me and most animals) but I talk to all of them. The regulars have names (eg Bonkey, Wonkey and Honkey Donkey, Moaney the Pony, a pleasant pheasant and so on) but i mention the weather to them, ask how they are all doing and admire their loveliness.

I am not on glue. But I can see how a passer by might think otherwise.

Goldenbug · 22/08/2018 20:53

Softsheen - There's an advert with a "horse" that works in a bank. That one.

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 22/08/2018 20:54

Well I thought I heard hooves but they didn’t sound like horses....

RubiksQueen · 22/08/2018 20:55

Are you talking about the Lloyds advert with the horses running along the beach?

Where the horses clearly are just being horses and not working IN a bank...

Soubriquet · 22/08/2018 20:56

Aaah so they are bankers dressed as horses hence the quote marks

All makes sense now

Alicatz66 · 22/08/2018 20:57

I love the horses that work in the bank ... they make me cry .. but I'm a bit scared of "cows" .. I got lost on a walk recently and had to go through a field of them .. no eye contact .. marched on through .. the "cows" didn't seem to sense fear !

Goldenbug · 22/08/2018 20:57

But they are "horses" aren't they Rubic?

FantastikRik · 22/08/2018 21:00

The horse from that advert actually works in my local bank. He’s v friendly and always happy to pose selfies.
