If you had to buy suncream which one would you buy?

Going abroad with 3dc who are very fair skinned to hotel with onsite water park. I have perilously used boots or Aldi for UK holidays but can't find any in my 2 local Aldi stores and read some reviews on boots and their Soltan cream now has terrible reviews with people claim it didn't work at all. So if you have been abroad what cream did you use that you didn't burn with.

Ultrasun.

Especially for kids and water.

HolyMountain · 22/08/2018 14:42

Piz Buin is my favourite.

BackToBeingMe · 22/08/2018 14:43

Ultrasun I have never heard of that is it widely available? off to Google now

Ultrasun

Once a day (for me and my family) - website has a table guide you can use to check what 'once a day' might mean to you specifically.

Guide

Have used it for years all over the world and none of us have ever burnt using it.

happymummy12345 · 22/08/2018 14:50

I only ever use garnier ambre solaire factor 50+ on me, and the kids one on ds. (I use the aftersun as well, not because I burn, just because I like the cool feeling on my skin after a day in the sun, I keep it in the fridge so it's nice and cold).

TroubledLichen · 22/08/2018 14:50

Ultrasun in brilliant, it feels really nice on your skin. I’ve bought it in Waitrose and M&S before and you can also find it online.

But if your suncream is applied properly and not gone out of date I don’t see how it can’t work. Most likely those people in the reviews didn’t apply enough or didn’t follow the guidelines like applying at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, reapplying every 2 hours and always after swimming. Usually I just buy whatever is on offer with a decent uva/uvb rating and I have never burned.

Have a great holiday Grin

Ultrasun or Soltan (Boots own brand)

OhBergine · 22/08/2018 14:54

Whoops just seen you burned with Soltan - that's strange. I've always sworn by it.

I use Ultrasun on the kids (and the glittery one on me!) and never had any issues.

BackToBeingMe · 22/08/2018 14:56

Ultrasun seems popular and it appears to be stocked in Waitrose there is one about 10 miles away.
Yes I was wondering if it was misuse of the suncream causing the problem as have used Boots Soltan a few times before in the UK and it be fine but there were a lot of 1 star reviews which puts me off slightly.

The Asda one is good. Apparently you need to find five uva stars (usually on the back) rather than simply going with the highest factor.

BackToBeingMe · 22/08/2018 14:58

I have never burned with Soltan alwdys found it to be good it is just the reviews are pretty bad so maybe they have changed the formula.

Wilco own make

fruitpastille · 22/08/2018 15:01

Soltan sensitive was fine for my fair skinned kids in 40 degree heat abroad recently. We didn't stay out all day obviously though. Also had rash vests or sunsuits most of the time.

dementedpixie · 22/08/2018 15:04

Soltan was fine for us as was aldi and any other own make brands with a 5 star uva rating

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 22/08/2018 15:05

I have had the same annoying experience ie Aldi are no longer stocking sun cream, what with it being August Hmm.

I've always bought Aldi as it's got a 5UVA rating, and a couple of the brands we looked at in Boots (including Ambre Solaire) didn't. We ended up with Soltan as it's 5.

unicornchaser · 22/08/2018 15:06

I used soltan factor 50+ on 8 year old in July, used correctly and applied several times throughout the first day, his back and arms where burnt to crisps! Had to spend the rest of the holiday with a uva blocking swim top on and a lot of aloe Vera! Also switched cream and used Nivea just to be on the safe side......
Don't think I would trust it for kids again but the factor 30 did us adults fine 👌🏻

dementedpixie · 22/08/2018 15:06

Also used some nivea but only the ones with 4 star uva. Most is 3 star and they don't seem to do 5 star stuff

thelmalouisewaitforme · 22/08/2018 15:08

I use Superdrug's own one as it's not tested on animals Smile

Itsatravesty · 22/08/2018 15:10

Altruist, available on amazon and much cheaper than ultrasun. I've been using it all summer after recommendations on here and I'm converted. It was developed by a skin cancer specialist and is unscented, paraben free and non pore blocking. Don't even feel like you have cream on and it was fine on my ds who has sun cream allergies.

BackToBeingMe · 22/08/2018 15:14

unicorn that is what reviews were saying and it really worries me. Had another look it seems to be mainly the water proof for 3 hour cream which I have never used. I'm now wondering as it says 3 hour protection people aren't reapplying often enough.

OP posts:
BackToBeingMe · 22/08/2018 15:15

Heard good things about the Superdrug own cream but it seems sold out online, might have to pop into town and look in store. Nivea is only 3 star rated so that puts me off to.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 22/08/2018 16:11

Not all nivea is 3 star. We got the 300ml trigger one and it is 4 star

coralush · 22/08/2018 16:12

Piz Buin

dementedpixie · 22/08/2018 16:17

Piz buin doesn't have good star ratings either

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/08/2018 16:22

Asda or Morrisons, or any supermarket own brand. Always worked fine.

Wondering about Boots as I got a multipack of theirs on offer, but haven't started it yet. Can't see how they would get it wrong, maybe it was people not putting enough on.

I've always subscribed to the 'buy cheap 5 star protection stuff, apply loads and reapply' and it's always worked for me. That once a day stuff sounds like a right faff and is extremely expensive.
