Kids current accounts

Can anybody recommend a bank or building society that enables a 14 year old to hold a current account with a debit card.
The debit card for access is the most important.

Or is there another way I can transfer money for my child to access.
She doesn't want the cash as it's a lot per month to secure.

Just opened a HSBC account for DD 11 which provided a contactless debit card

RomanyRoots · 22/08/2018 18:17

Aw thanks for the responses.
I went to see them at Halifax as we have accounts here, she has a current account already but it's the same thing, if there's no atm handy then she can't access her money.

Sometimes she doesn't have long enough to go looking for an atm, and doesn't like carrying or having to keep too much cash.
It's not the account that's the problem, it's the fact they are all the same and they won't give debit cards to this age.

Can I ask if the account from Santander is in the child's or adults name, this could be where I'm going wrong.

Santander account is in the child's name with adult account holder as guarantor.

You can only apply online now if child is over 13. I have had to make an appointment to take DS into the local branch to apply for account as he is 11.

I don't understand the problem. It's easier to go to the atm surely than queue up at the bank. I didn't think people ever went to the bank to get money any more. But you can use a debit card to withdraw money over the counter if you want to.

MrsChollySawcutt · 22/08/2018 18:28

Its this one. Account is held in trust by adult if child is under 13.

I opened ds's Santander account online and he is 11.

MrsChollySawcutt · 22/08/2018 19:03

How did you managed that dementedpixie? I opened DD's account online when she was 11 (now15) but when I went to the site to open one for DS, this is what it says:

You can apply online today if you are:
• aged between 13 and 18 years old and;
• living permanently in the UK

Applying in a branch
You can pop into your local branch to open your 1|2|3 Mini Current Account. Any accounts held in trust must be opened in branch.
• For children under age 13, the account must be opened in trust and managed by an adult (trustee). The trustee must be aged 18 or over, have parental responsibility for the child and hold a Santander personal current account.
• You may need to book an appointment. Find your nearest branch
• Remember, you'll need to bring some proof of your name and address (and your child’s name if you’re applying for them). See a list of acceptable identification

HSBC My Money with debit card and online banking at 11.

2.75% interest on the linked savings account so pretty good.

meadowmeow · 22/08/2018 19:10

Halifax do a current account with a debit card from 11 years. As do the majority of high street banks.

meadowmeow · 22/08/2018 19:11

I don't understand the problem. It's easier to go to the atm surely than queue up at the bank.

I think OP meant if there is no ATM nearby the debit card can be used in shops etc

meadowmeow · 22/08/2018 19:12

I don't know why you are having difficulty tbh OP.

ineedteanownotlater · 22/08/2018 19:13

My son is 11 and has got a nationwide account with debit card which also has contactless and online banking.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/08/2018 19:16

My two boys have Santander mini 123 accounts. We're going to move them to Nationwide soon though as I don't like the way Santander treat their staff.

itshappenedagain · 22/08/2018 19:18

My ds is 11 and has a Halifax express ash card. I had to go into the branch to set it up but it even comes with online banking and is contactless. It's fine so far, my cousin ( 13) still doesn't have a bank card and is trying to get me to convince her Mum to sort it out! It's easier to lose cash and she always has her phone so wants applepay like everyone else her age.

ilovewine · 22/08/2018 19:20

I just opened a Nationwide one for DD 15 which gives her a card and was one of the few that have an app for her phone for kids and we transfer money from our bank as needed.

RomanyRoots · 22/08/2018 19:27

Yes, that's it I didn't try nationwide.
I was looking for a debit card she could use in shops, but not contactless as anyone at school could use it. I'm sure they wouldn't but it would hold her cb for the month.
The ones she was offered were atm use or visit the bank, and she wants to be able to pop out to her local shops at lunch time.
She boards at school and is only allowed in certain areas, for safety.

Thank you all for the responses, I'm going to close the Halifax account and open a Nationwide.

Thanks again.
