Why why why is the shampoo bottle bigger than the conditioner?

I wonder about this every time I wash my hair, I only need a small amount of shampoo on my long thick hair as it lathers up. I need a big handful of conditioner though! I know it's not all of them but the ones I like seem to do this!
Any ideas?

Alberto Balsam do shampoo and conditioner in the same size bottle and they smell lovely!

QueenCity · 22/08/2018 09:04

I shampoo my hair twice and condition once so it makes sense to me that the shampoo bottle is bigger.

I am other way around and always finish shampoo quicker than conditioner . Plus I wash twice with shampoo mostly

My theory is that you'll never finish both at the same time so you have to stay with the same brand.

You definitely need more shampoo than conditioner! You need to shampoo your whole head and hair. Even with thick curly hair, I don't need as much conditioner, it doesn't go on the roots otherwise it goes greasy. If I use too much it goes limp and greasy.

If anything I hate bottles that are the same size for shampoo and conditioner. What brand so do you buy?!

tectonicplates · 22/08/2018 09:07

Depends how hard or soft the water is in your area. If you live in London you need to use more shampoo.

ilovechurros · 22/08/2018 09:09

My hairdresser that you should always shampoo your hair twice. The first shampoo only cleans the scalp, the second cleans the hair. I’ve no idea if this is true or not. However, I’ve always shampooed my hair twice, and always use it faster.

Ollivander84 · 22/08/2018 09:10

I use conditioner only but even when I did use shampoo I need handfuls of conditioner, roots and all!

Childrenofthesun · 22/08/2018 09:12

I always get through shampoo quicker than conditioner. Depends on your hair type and water type I suppose. I live in a very hard water area and have oily hair so I need a lot of shampoo to get it to lather up and wash well and only a tiny bit if conditioner on the ends. I hadn't really noticed that conditioner bottles were smaller though. I use different brands.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/08/2018 09:14

The “shampoo twice” advice was made up by a shampoo manufacturer as a way for people to use up shampoo twice as quickly. You do not need to do it.

With you OP - I have curly dry hair and need twice the conditioner

AdventuresRUs · 22/08/2018 09:15

Shampooing twice was an marketting strategy. I think they simply wrote repeat if needed or something on the bottle?

We tend to use more conditioner as we have dry non greasy hair.

AdventuresRUs · 22/08/2018 09:15

Snap!

SapphireSeptember · 22/08/2018 09:16

Herbal essences are the same size, but I use roughly four bottles of shampoo to one bottle of conditioner (I have really long hair that gets greasy quickly, and live in a really hard water area.)

Babdoc · 22/08/2018 09:19

Yup, that ad was cited as “Which three words will double your sales?”
Answer: “Rinse and repeat!”
I’m afraid my response is: If the shampoo worked the first time, why repeat it? And if it didn’t work- why repeat it?!

llangennith · 22/08/2018 09:19

Thick dry wavy hair so I use way more conditioner than shampoo
Why do people shampoo their hair twice? One shampoo is quite sufficient to clean your hair. You wouldn't wash you face or body twice so why your hair?

BertrandRusselI · 22/08/2018 09:21

Roughly double conditioner to shampoo.

I wash roots and let suds cleanse length. But I need to coat 5/6 of hair in conditioner.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 22/08/2018 09:24

YANBU. Thick, curly hair here and I use at least twice as much conditioner as shampoo, despite living in a hard water area.

Uncreative · 22/08/2018 09:36

YANBU

It has always pissed me off. I always run out of conditioner before shempoo.

adaline · 22/08/2018 09:37

Curls here too and I definitely need more conditioner than shampoo or my hair goes horrifically dry and frizzy!

BraveAndStunning · 22/08/2018 09:37

Bet you live in a soft water area OP? You need far far more shampoo in a hard water area.

I totally agree with you, I live in a soft water area and use a lot less shampoo than conditioner. 3 for 2 offers are your friend

AdventuresRUs · 22/08/2018 09:38

Hard water area but still need more conditioner!

I wondered the other day how much was normal as my daughter uses tons.

marvelousways · 22/08/2018 09:41

Thick dry curly hair here, hard water area. and I buy 2 bottles of conditioner to every one of shampoo. Always irritated me too!

RosettaStoned · 22/08/2018 09:42

I always run out of conditioner whilst I have loads of shampoo left in the bottle. My hair is thick and wavy and shampoo lathers up loads in my hair no matter what brand I use. I end up buying another conditioner if the same brand. Probably very close to a 2:1 ratio. Why not just make the conditioner bottle bigger??

BringOnTheScience · 22/08/2018 09:54

I have long, straight, very fine hair so I condition only the lower half. I get through 2 or 2 bottles of shampoo to each of conditioner.

wonkylegs · 22/08/2018 10:01

I suspect your hair makes a difference to how much of each you use.
I have wavy (frizzy) long hair and use more conditioner than shampoo especially in hot weather as I sometimes just use conditioner rather than shampoo as it reduces the frizz

Even though I have lots more hair I use less shampoo than DH though as he washes his pretty much every day or it gets greasy whereas I only wash it once or twice a week otherwise it goes too frizzy.
