Urban myth debunked?!

I really, honestly, cross my heart and hope (not) to die came across this today: young mum, one little boy walking the other in a buggy. Walking boy was having a tantrum and mum was trying to calm him down. During their convo I heard both boys's names: Reggie and Ronnie!! (as in Kray...). Beautiful kids, lovely mum doing her best, but honestly Reggie and Ronnie?

A family joke maybe?

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/08/2018 13:24

A relation?

An unfortunate coincidence where she didn't know. If she was 'young' there is probably an age below which those names don't mean anything and she wouldn't think anything of it.

What is common knowledge to one generation is meaningless to younger people. I once heard a 20 something say they had never heard or either Lord Lucan or Shergar.

DGRossetti · 21/08/2018 14:07

Back in 1987 I heard a young mum in McDonalds telling "Kylie" and "Jason" to behave ....

BIWI · 21/08/2018 14:09

I don't understand - how is this debunking an urban myth? Confused

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 21/08/2018 14:11

How is this an urban myth?

Both those names are popular at the moment, I doubt the parents know the connection.

Childrenofthesun · 21/08/2018 14:19

There were twins called Reggie and Ronnie in DD's room at nursery. I met them several times and wondered what their parents were thinking.

Bombardier25966 · 21/08/2018 14:24

I think it's funny.

Although I don't get the urban myth reference either.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/08/2018 14:29

Maybe it's an urban myth as in no-one really believes people with such names exist, like La-a or Nevaeh?

LittleDoritt · 21/08/2018 14:31

The urban myth thing is because when people on here say they have met a La-a or what have you, everyone responds "No you haven't, that's an urban myth". Ronnie and Reggie are way more common though.
And yes, why would a mother think that was a good idea???

yolofish · 21/08/2018 14:33

well yes re comments about urban myths above, being that Ronnie and Reggie Kray were not very nice boys (tho I expect their mum loved them). Very beautiful family, and the mum was so patient with stroppy Reggie (much more so than I would have been, I'd have been the screechy mummy)

Maybe she just really likened the new film because Tom hardy plays them both Wink

Timeisslippingaway · 21/08/2018 14:35

*liked

3stonedown · 21/08/2018 14:36

Whilst they aren't names I would choose anyway I had honestly never heard of the Kray twins until around 4 years ago when more films about them started being made. I'm 26 if that makes a difference

mintich · 21/08/2018 14:37

Are you in Essex? There are so many kids called Reggie/Ronnie here!

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/08/2018 14:39

3stone

Ok, to illustrate the point I made above, does either Shergar or Lord Lucan mean anything to you?

AstralTraveller · 21/08/2018 14:40

I don't think it's an urban myth that R and R Kray were not very nice. I think it's well documented that they were a pair of twisted psychopathic torturing killers OP. Naming your children after them is as thick as shit but people are allowed to call their kids whatever they want I guess? We have had a massive family rift because a DD in the family has been named something appalling. It's something that is not allowed to be mentioned though, even in the most sensitive way it would seem as it causes upset out of all proportion. At least if the DD gets to 19 and decides to take up stripping she won't have to change her name anyways Grin

In the park a few months ago I heard a teacher call out to a child and her name was LADASHA. I'd only ever heard it on Mumsnet.

NewYearNewMe18 · 21/08/2018 14:42

I know two sets of Reggie and Ronnies, neither are twins though

youngestisapsycho · 21/08/2018 14:48

What is La-a?? How is that pronounced?

Nousernameforme · 21/08/2018 14:57

I used to know a Sid and Nancy their mum was completely unaware that it might seem odd to some

3stonedown · 21/08/2018 15:12

barbara I'm afraid not! should I be embarrassed?

TricycleBicycle · 21/08/2018 15:23

I know someone who has a kid called Neveah. Didn't realise that one was supposed to be an urban myth!

badtime · 21/08/2018 15:28

I have always suspected that there are probably quite a few 'Fred and Rose' siblings out there whose parents just didn't think of it. I don't see why Reggie and Ronnie would be all that unlikely, particularly with younger parents.
