Urban myth debunked?!

I really, honestly, cross my heart and hope (not) to die came across this today: young mum, one little boy walking the other in a buggy. Walking boy was having a tantrum and mum was trying to calm him down. During their convo I heard both boys's names: Reggie and Ronnie!! (as in Kray...). Beautiful kids, lovely mum doing her best, but honestly Reggie and Ronnie?

How do you pronounce Nevaeh?

RedCrab, la-a is pronounced la dash(-) a . Ladasha. Allegedly.

Clawdy · 22/08/2018 09:19

Myra wasn't regarded as a particularly attractive name when I was growing up in the sixties. After Hindley, it became unthinkable, and I think will certainly remain so in the Manchester area.

ElizabethMainwaring · 22/08/2018 09:26

I really don't think that the name Myra will ever be rehabilitated. I don't think that this is any great loss.
Hindley's name and image are too iconic. She was seen as the personification of evil.

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/08/2018 09:26

Yes, maybe the perception of the name Myra is regional. Certainly in Northern England, the association is too strong.

I doubt very much that anywhere near everyone has heard of Dame Myra Hess though. I certainly haven't and I can't be the only one.

DaphneFanshaw · 22/08/2018 09:29

My dp shares a name with a famous character. DP had it first though.
It does make things tricky, people often think he is playing a trick on them and they hang up on them when making phone calls.

SagelyNodding · 22/08/2018 09:34

La-a = LaDASHa

Racecardriver · 22/08/2018 09:37

I have no idea what you are talking about. I wouldn't call ky children reggie or Ronnie but I don't think that is for the reason you are thinking of.

DaphneFanshaw · 22/08/2018 09:39

I think the Ladasha thing is usually bullshit.

ElizabethMainwaring · 22/08/2018 09:41

Racecardriver - the Kray Twins? No?

BellBookandCandle · 22/08/2018 09:45

Missing the point slightly, but I don't see how the solicitor in the Scotsman Article could have been given the information.

I would have thought that Section 40 of the DPA would have been applied and his request refused as the request for info would impact on someone's privacy (the child and parents). Also, information should not be released where it is possible to identify the individual from the information given.

foxedupfox · 22/08/2018 09:46

What's so bad about the names reggie and Ronnie together?

LaDaronne · 22/08/2018 09:50

A friend of a friend recently had a baby Sid, surname James. The over thirties I told immediately went "nyah nyah nyah", the other under thirties didn't see the problem...

Anyonewhoknows · 22/08/2018 09:50

3 yr old twins at my sons nursery are called Ronnie and Reggie. Just why?!

Mrbatmun · 22/08/2018 09:52

I think that people now romanticise the Kray twins slightly now, and think they were 'cool gangsters', hence the naming your kids Ronnie and Reggie. Especially if you are from Essex, as its like an homage to your East End roots.

Knitjob · 22/08/2018 09:53

I heard a radio interview last week with an expert, can't remember if he was a professor, called Harry Potter. Imagine if you'd quietly been called Harry Potter all of your life then suddenly the wizard Harry Potter arrives and no-one can take your name seriously any more.

GrumbleBumble · 22/08/2018 09:56

I have a friend who couldn't understand the raised eyebrows reaction to calling her second William. A lovely name but son 1 is Benjamin. Yep they are Bill and Ben but they call them Benji and Will so didn't spot the link.
I used to live near twin girls call Kylie and Charlene born in the early days of Neighbours being shown in the UK.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 22/08/2018 10:02

Knitjob, was Harry Potter a barrister? I've heard him on Radio 4 before.

WeeDangerousSpike · 22/08/2018 10:07

Are the people heading La-a sure it's not Latasha? I went to school with a Latasha.

I'm mid 30s. I've heard of all the rest but who on earth are Sid and Nancy?!

LaDaronne · 22/08/2018 10:09

sid vicious and nancy spungen.

I think will and benji to bill and ben is a bit of a stretch!

ElizabethMainwaring · 22/08/2018 10:11

@weedangerousspike
Sid Vicious (punk band Sex Pistols) and girlfriend Nancy Spungeon. Sid was accused of murdering Nancy and Sid committed suicide before the trial. They were both hopeless heroin addicts and it was all very sad and sordid.

ElizabethMainwaring · 22/08/2018 10:14

I'm amazed at how little people know about stuff that happened 'before their time'. I'm mid-forties but I'm aware of events prior to 1980.

ShowOfHands · 22/08/2018 10:18

I know two people who have DC called Nevaeh (specifically because it's heaven backwards, that spelling). Both preteens. I also know one Khaleesi and have met one other in passing.

IHeartKingThistle · 22/08/2018 10:25

There was a great thread on here a few years ago where a poster knew triplets called Faith, Hope and Kevin. I want it to be true so badly!

MissLingoss · 22/08/2018 10:33

I doubt very much that anywhere near everyone has heard of Dame Myra Hess though. I certainly haven't and I can't be the only one.

I said everyone had heard of her, back when Myra was a popular name, Not that everyone knows her now.

I don't see how the solicitor in the Scotsman Article could have been given the information.

I would have thought that Section 40 of the DPA would have been applied and his request refused as the request for info would impact on someone's privacy (the child and parents).

Unless things have changed very recently, registers of births, marriages and deaths are public records, accessible to everyone. The part I object to is his use of the FOI, when he could have used his own time and money if he was that desperate to know.

kitbabingley · 22/08/2018 10:35

Nevaeh is almost common I'd say. As in frequently used. The one I know (in my dc's class, not a friend of a friend's sister's boyfriend's boss...) is pronounced Neh-VAY-uh.
