...I can post pics on request!!

Refuse collectors missed out our section of the close last week, so 3 weeks' worth of rubbish in green bin, with another week to go.

Went to bing another black bag in this morning, green bin ALIVE with maggots, literally couldn't see any green.

Phoned the council, they're able to pick it up in 4 days as long as I leave maggoty bin on drive 😱

Nose-peg on. Took all the black bags out, quadruple-bagged them, bleached bin inside and out, washed bin out with several kettles of boiling water, jeyes powder in, quadruple-bagged bins back in.

Nice clean very full bin now sitting neatly on drive. I've set fire to my clothes and bathed in dettol and feel marginally better for killing spree Grin

One of the neighbours has just offered to JetwashTM the bin. I took great delight in informing him I'd managed to contain the outbreak and that normal service had been resumed.

Quite bad Lweji? Pray tell, what is worse? Actually, maybe don't tell me. I am guessing a body several days after death must trump everything.

The thing about the potatoes also is that when you go to move them, they explode on you. Such awful memories.....

Pinkyponkcustard · 21/08/2018 12:53

I opened the outside bin last week and a fly flew out?! Does that mean I had a maggot do you think?

Bins since been collected so not that arsed really Smile

bettytaghetti · 21/08/2018 13:20

This is bringing back all sorts of horrible memories for me!
Many years ago we had been away on holiday for several weeks and it had been very warm here, like this summer.
In pre kids days the house would always be spotless when we went away (notice I said pre kids days!). As we opened the door there was a rather unpleasant smell, but thought it might be due to it having been so warm & the house shut up for several weeks, however it got stronger as I approached the stairs to go down to the kitchen. Down there the smell was almost overwhelming & DH couldn't take it and left the house. Hmm When I investigated further it turned out to be coming from our fridge freezer.
To explain fully, it was a very old house, and before we had work done on it there were very few electric sockets around the kitchen, so the fridge freezer was plugged into an extension lead that ran round the room to where we had a desk with a computer. DH had thought he was being safe by switching the computer off at the wall while we were away, forgetting that the fridge freezer was also plugged into it.
In the freezer had been several SEALED bags of meat from the butchers, but clearly this is a good warning for cooking meat properly, as there were maggots and flies INSIDE the bags. Other stuff had leaked everywhere with the most awful putrid mess. Envy

flumpybear · 21/08/2018 13:26

When we moved into a new house as a kid it was dreadful, dog dirt and thick nicotine everywhere, completely needed stopping and sorting which it was - dining carpet was ok so kept that as winter was coming and mum said we could do my room and the lounge and kitchen then concentrate on the other rooms. Had a few hot days and things started crawling in that carpet .... ... yep - maggots!! 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮
Carpet was immediately tossed out the door! Hated that house the whole 10 years my mum owned it Envy

TwoBlueShoes · 21/08/2018 13:27

Take a shower!

I had this once and when I finished I came inside and was just getting on with my day when I felt something on my arm and there was a maggot crawling down my arm.

I still have nightmares about it.

Sparklingbrook · 21/08/2018 13:30

This week I have dealt with mouldy liquid potatoes and cleaned out the filter of the washing machine.

No maggots. Yet.

ShackUp · 21/08/2018 13:48

What's with all the liquified spuds? I'm low carbing so my cupboards are bare potato-less

I wouldn't know. Unless you meant dead maggot bodies.

But not as bad as D&V smells. Or my dishwasher after a few days of dish stacking in the Summer (it's only two of us).

Lweji · 21/08/2018 13:59

What's with all the liquified spuds?

It's what happens when you buy bags of potatoes, but don't eat many.

Lweji · 21/08/2018 14:01

Once I came home from holiday to find maggots around the cat's bowl. The person I had asked to feed the cat clearly didn't think to keep the bowl clean. That was the last time I asked her. She had been paid to do it too. [yikes]

I was just surprised the cat didn't eat them, though.

Elderflower14 · 21/08/2018 14:52

I forgot about a ham sandwich in a bag a few years ago. I was on the phone to a friend when I investigated the bag. I opened the sandwich box screamed OMG MAGGOTS" and dropped the phone which disconnected. My friend rang back to make sure I was OK. There was about 20 maggots in there and the smell was disgusting. The whole thing lunch box and sandwich went in the bin!! 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢

applesin · 21/08/2018 15:52

@Lweji we had the same thing, went ok holiday recently, came back to the most appalling smell. The people who were coming in to feed the cat had somehow missed what must have been an epic maggot infestation (and more under the tray that had the cat food bowl) guessing by the amount of flies (40-50) on our kitchen. EnvyAngryConfused the cat food bowl was disgusting, and they'd left an open bin bag full of the old cat food (only a few days worth thank god). Worst possible thing to come back to from a holiday.

birdsdestiny · 21/08/2018 16:02

Nope I win the most disgusing household task. I have a rabbit. For those who don't know rabbits do 2 types of poo, one which they poo out and one which they eat as it contains nutrients. My rabbit as he is lazy and a bit stupid has stopped eating the nutrient poo. It therefore collects around his butt and fur. It's not a good idea to bathe rabbits so I just spent a pleasant half hour cutting off poo and hair entangled in poo. The vet has told me this will need to be a regular occurrence. I want to weep.

Flapdoodles · 21/08/2018 16:10

I have just done this job myself - it was disgusting and took all my self control not to vomit. We went out shopping earlier and as soon as we went out of the door we were overwhelmed by a pungent smell. I investigated when we got home and the bin was teeming with maggots - DS had had a tray of seafood and thrown the discarded bits into the bin without wrapping it! I thought about leaving it but the bin men are not due for another week so I have cleaned it with boiling water and Zoflora and triple bagged everything. Uurgh! Envy

ShackUp · 21/08/2018 16:40

Solidaritous fist bump for flapdoodles 👊

I used to go out with a fisherman; he was away and asked me to check in on his flat. One day I went in and could hear a strange rustling sound, I went all over the place looking for the source, eventually found it on top of his bait fridge. There was a polystyrene box on top, the sound was coming from there, I lifted the lid.................. he had left half a chicken in there, it was literally alive with maggots, their wriggling against the polystyrene was causing the noise! I really can'y believe I did this; I called him and asked what I should do, he gave me clear and concise instructions about removing them and putting them in a bait box with maize flour. I did this, put them in the bait fridge and wrapped up the slimy semi digested remains of the chicken and put it in the bin. Don't think I would do that now.

Oblomov18 · 21/08/2018 16:54

I can see the photos

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 21/08/2018 17:56

Apparently we have maggots in our brown (food and garden waste) bin, have to wait till Thursday for it to be emptied, then it will be attacked with bleach followed by zoflora Grin

TSSDNCOP · 21/08/2018 18:19

Oh god! I had to do the same job last weekend. DH has thrown a bottle of milk in, to this day I still cannot get to the bottom of why, and the stench was indescribable and the fly/maggot situation the stuff of horror movies.

You’ll feel the crawly fuckers on you for hours.

Golde · 21/08/2018 21:08

You'd be amazed how quickly the birds eat them. Mine was like yours and they ate them off the black bins bags, they were like little ninjas.

ShackUp · 22/08/2018 06:50

I shall definitely let the birds in next time! I did feel bad flinging bleach around.
