Just completed the most disgusting household task of my life...

...I can post pics on request!!

Refuse collectors missed out our section of the close last week, so 3 weeks' worth of rubbish in green bin, with another week to go.

Went to bing another black bag in this morning, green bin ALIVE with maggots, literally couldn't see any green.

Phoned the council, they're able to pick it up in 4 days as long as I leave maggoty bin on drive 😱

Nose-peg on. Took all the black bags out, quadruple-bagged them, bleached bin inside and out, washed bin out with several kettles of boiling water, jeyes powder in, quadruple-bagged bins back in.

Nice clean very full bin now sitting neatly on drive. I've set fire to my clothes and bathed in dettol and feel marginally better for killing spree Grin

Horrordoeurvres shudder!

ShackUp · 21/08/2018 10:54

horrordoeuvres your username kinda describes what I've just seen in my bin Grin

I had maggots from a small tear in a black bag crawling on my living room carpet once,I lost count at forty inside and it took hours of time and litres of bleach and Dettol to sort out. I love moggies but wish they'd leave my fucking bin alone.

ShackUp · 21/08/2018 10:59

Living room carpet!!

Just to clarify the bin bag was outside! But the little bastards came in through the open back door Angry

CrispsAndDip · 21/08/2018 11:00

I think we need photographic evidence

CherryBlossom23 · 21/08/2018 11:01

But where do they come from?! Surely they can't just propagate themselves in the rubbish?! Don't flies have to lay eggs or something first?!
I might never touch my bin again after this thread.

ShackUp · 21/08/2018 11:02

Are my photos not showing? Have a scroll up thread and see if they're there. I'm on the app so website might take a bit longer?

There are no photos

HonkyWonkWoman · 21/08/2018 11:05

Probably missing point of thread but in our area Green Bins are for Garden Waste and Food waste and the only bags allowed in them are the little green ones.

If we put black bags in them, they won't empty them as they go to make compost.
We only out black bags in General Waste Bins (grey in our area).

Sparrowlegs248 · 21/08/2018 11:05

I can see photos. Boak.

ShackUp · 21/08/2018 11:06

cherry I've lied by omission on this thread Blush

I slung a bin bag outside a couple of days ago, fully intending to put it in the overflowing green bin that the council hadn't picked up. DH kindly picked it up and slung it in for me. Flies had ample chance to attack in that time slot! told you I was a slattern

Re: the nappies, I always double bag them but they are still disgusting.

We get this in our food bin in the summer. It is inevitable when it sits out for hours in the sun waiting for the bin men to come. It's the scrapped out cat food in ours I think, flies lay their eggs in the old cat food, and then I scrape the bits in the bin.... bleuch..... I used to get grossed out but now I leave the lid off, and a little robin comes and cleans in out for me. He is adorable. When he is done, I fill it up with bleach and water and leave it until I need it next.

ShackUp · 21/08/2018 11:07

We never got a little food waste bin when we moved in

Why haven't MN fixed the issue where photos don't show for everyone on the browser if they've been posted on the app?

ChateauRouge · 21/08/2018 11:09

Am chortling at miniature carrion crows, or tiny wingless vultures babdoc!

ShackUp · 21/08/2018 11:11

@MNHQ sorry about this but there are lots of people who wish to gasp at my maggot-infested bin, so we'd be grateful if you could see your way to uploading the photos! Thanking you.

OP posts:
ShackUp · 21/08/2018 11:11

*gawp. And possibly gasp, too.

OP posts:
Golde · 21/08/2018 11:14

You just leave it open for an hour or two. The birds eat them all and then you've just got an empty bin to disinfect, no maggots

ShackUp · 21/08/2018 11:17

golde the bin was full of bin bags and the refuse collectors could be dropping round at any minute - it was a race against time! Also, no bird would actually enter a green bin, would it? 🤔

ShotsFired · 21/08/2018 11:20

I had a maggoty bin. Couldn't face it the day I found it so left it and then about 48hrs later they were all dead.....

So top tip: find maggots, leave it a few days and look again.

Although I beg to differ with "most disgusting task" if you have ever had to unscrew and clean the u bend under your kitchen sink. The smell! VOM!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/08/2018 11:23

If you have room in your freezer, bagging up any bits of meat/fish/cat food etc. (stuff that attracts bluebottles) and leaving it there until the night before the bin men come, works for us. Our veg food waste is securely bagged before being put in a firmly closed bin, and we've never had maggots.
I read somewhere that bluebottles can smell anything dead (inc. leftover meat) from a mile away!

Oh, and cheese - I once had a fit while clearing up a French rental after our extended-family holiday, since some idiot had left an opened pack of smelly soft cheese on a high kitchen shelf. When I picked it up, it was literally alive with maggots. I dropped it PDQ and the revolting things were then all over the floor. Don't mind admitting that I got dh to 'do the needful'.

Dumbledoresgirl · 21/08/2018 11:23

Maggots in a bin are disgusting (been there, done that) but for the award of most disgusting household task ever, surely clearing out a cupboard with mouldy potatoes in should win?

*Also hoping to see pic.

Mitzimaybe · 21/08/2018 11:24

My bin was full of maggots this morning too. It must be the week for it (like flying ant day only it's bin maggot day.)

I like the idea of leaving it open (after it's been emptied) to let the birds eat the maggots. Will do that tonight if my DH hasn't already dealt with it when I get home.

Rebecca36 · 21/08/2018 11:28

I've had that experience and it is utterly vile - very satisfying when all is cleaned though. Well done you!
