Do you feel safe in your own home/area/city etc?

I am a lone parent of a severely disabled adult child. I live alone and rarely have visitors. I sometimes wonder if we are being watched and a nasty man will get I to my house and murder us.

I only think like this after watching myrder/missing cases on YouTube really.

I live in a big city but the darkness of the countryside is scary. Surely it us better for the murderers to hang out there?

Stranger murders are very rare you are far more likely to be killed my friends and family ( there’s a cheery though for you!)
I feel very safe where I live in SE London and am happy to walk about day or night by myself and have no fear of intruders (unless I’ve been watching a scary film)

BitchQueen90 · 19/08/2018 21:56

I live in a flat in a large town near 2 cities. It's a cheap place to live here, it's not a bad place but not a good one either in terms of crime.

Do I feel safe here? Yes, I honestly do. The amount of people that live around me is a comfort. I'd feel really unsafe living in an isolated location, if something happened while I was alone there would be nobody nearby to help.

Don't watch that stuff at night either! Grin

RedneckStumpy · 19/08/2018 22:00

Personally I prefer the dark and shadows, no one will attack me if I am hiding in the dark.

We moved from the UK to the US tons very rural area. Here we never lock doors or cars, it’s perfectly safe. However everyone including us have guns so that may be why it’s so safe. Any criminal would basically be committing suicide.

Mum2jenny · 19/08/2018 22:02

I never think about that sort of stuff, and I'm quite happy going into city centres

SoleBizzz · 19/08/2018 22:11

Are you scared when you're in the countryside at night gamer?

If I think I will be murdered I Will??

That so called man who.killed his Wife and three children. The interview be gave was chilling and he had marks upon his body.

Murderers.. are they everywhere like paedophiles Are?

I didn't feel that safe at night when I lived on my own a few years ago. I was okay when my eldest son was there. My partner also decided to work nights for two years and I used to feel scared. I had trouble falling asleep. I don't think it's where I live I just don't like being on my own at night 😕

RedneckStumpy · 19/08/2018 22:17

Most murder’s happen out of need. They are killed because they know something, will do something, or prevent something.

It’s extremely rare to be killed for no reason

mustangcountry · 19/08/2018 22:21

However everyone including us have guns so that may be why it’s so safe.

😂

SoleBizzz · 19/08/2018 22:23

I sometimes think I should put a weapon under my pillow. A bat? A needle? A spoon to scoop out the attackers eye?

OP posts:
SpectacularAardvark · 19/08/2018 22:28

I can't say I worry about being murdered much where I live but I'm terrified of being robbed or mugged.

SpectacularAardvark · 19/08/2018 22:30

A bat would be awfully lumpy under the pillow wouldn't it?

SpectacularAardvark · 19/08/2018 22:31

Maybe a lighter and keep a can of hairspray by the bed?

I'm thinking about this too much now...

userxx · 19/08/2018 22:34

@SpectacularAardvark 🤣🤣. Keep them coming. Seriously op, you need to get a grip, it's not normal to be thinking about this kind of shit.

ThinkingCat · 19/08/2018 22:36

I would suggest you don't watch scary things on YouTube or TV. Watch some nice feel-good things instead.

Also have you considered getting a dog - for company and as a deterrent.

Bloodybridget · 19/08/2018 22:39

I feel pretty sure we won't be burgled; in a terraced house where access from the back would be very difficult. Walking around, I do feel safe, but I am careful - put cash away securely, don't stand around oblivious with my phone in my hand, etc. I live in a high-crime area, but statistically I'm unlikely to be a victim of crime - certainly of violent attack.

SoleBizzz · 19/08/2018 22:44

Hand grenade it is!

userx stop being so serious.. lighten up buddy

I very rarely watch that kind of thing or read about it but I felt like it and the shit that is on YouTube is seriously fucked up. I'll be ok. Still more scared of the countryside and the folks there. They're weird.. just watch the Wicker Man

SneakyGremlins · 19/08/2018 22:48

I live on the town marketplace, above a takeaway and a few meters from several pubs. I don't like walking alone at night here. I might be a man (like people point out, "helpfully"), but I'm also 5"2! Easy pickings for drunks.

SoleBizzz · 19/08/2018 22:50

I live in so called big bad Birmingham. One car stolen and mugged once. Not bad.

Fatbelliedgirl · 19/08/2018 22:51

Where I currently live, yes, very safe. Surrounded by other houses all sides and we have CCTV, high gates/fences, tough doors etc. Also friendly, approachable neighbours who look out for each other.

Where I used to live until last year - end of a snobby cul-de-sac, edge of a forest with a large disused field at back of house, field also backed on to other houses and the forest. DH worked away a lot during the time there and some nights, even daytime, I felt a little nervous about who/what might be hiding in the field. Coming home on dark evenings was horrible. Got worse after a neighbour on the next road threatened us. After that I always set the alarm at night when I went upstairs and was paranoid about safety, e.g. triple checking all doors and windows were locked at night. Also didn't help there were 90ft+ Douglas fir trees next to the house in the field, very scary in high winds especially as the owner refused to maintain them and make them safe, but that's another story.

Glad we moved, albeit for DH's job relocation.

userxx · 19/08/2018 22:56

@SoleBizzz I'm confused, are you joking about being scared? I feel very safe where I live, I left my front door unlocked twice last week.

ImogenTubbs · 19/08/2018 23:04

We live in suburban Spain. It's wonderfully safe. We do lock doors but don't need to (used to live in London so in the habit). In fact our neighbours went out for the day recently and left their gate and front door wide open. Everything was fine when they got home. Of course, no one around here has guns so maybe we're just kidding ourselves.

SoleBizzz · 19/08/2018 23:11

I just had to write down my thoughts. MNHQ if I haven't posted for a day or two DIAL 999 the nasty man got us.

ATownCalledAlicia · 19/08/2018 23:18

I also live in Birmingham. I feel perfectly safe although I had a friend who grew up in a very small community elsewhere in the UK feel constantly nervous when she lived here.

I grew up in London. Surely it just depends on your background and mindset? I don't expect bad things to happen to me although we have been burgled.

hmcAsWas · 19/08/2018 23:19

"Still more scared of the countryside and the folks there. They're weird"

That's fine, I feel the same way about people who choose to live in Birmingham!

We are semi rural - we have one neighbour (not very close), and fields on two sides of our land (the road borders the third side and the neighbour borders the 4th side). It is dark at night and both neighbour and I tend to leave lights on all night around the perimeters of our house. I hadn't felt particularly worried but there have been two recent burglaries within a mile of us. Still we have dogs (barking is a deterrent) and a police monitored house alarm, plus electric gates ....
