What's good to buy in Lidl?

I've realised that shopping in Sainsbury's is ruddy expensive and have started shopping in my local Lidl.

Only thing is I'm not sure about the meat. How is it for mince, chicken thighs, gammon joints etc?

Also what else as well is good in there? Find it a bit difficult as they don't always have everything we need and it's a bit random.

Crefe - garlic cream cheese stuff. Am not actually sure what it is but I know I can no longer buy it because I eat the whole tub in a night.

I shop in Lidl getting what I can then get everything else in Tesco - saves me a fortune!

Things you should definitely buy in Lidl without question are toilet roll, washing tablets, kitchen roll, cleaning products, washing up liquid etc, etc.

Fruit and veg - just take a look at it I find they have good weeks and bad weeks for things like any supermarket. Generally very good, but if it looks iffy I get it from Tesco

I find the meat and fish very good. In fact the beef and salmon I find to be superior to tesco.

Any dried goods that you can get in there do I like the coffee pods, olive oil and baking supplies.

Things I don’t buy would be their crisps, ham, butter (I like anchor spreadable but their fake Stork for baking is great) fish fingers (really bad!)

I think there may be certain branded items you’re used to where you’ll notice a difference but for the most part I find the quality to be excellent

We like chunky soups and their chicken&veg and beef&veg are good. Ham trimmings and cream cheese are yum

Moltenpink · 19/08/2018 21:01

Just had spatchcock Piri piri chicken and kale coleslaw for dinner, it was lovely.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 19/08/2018 21:02

We've switched to Lidl and Aldi for the last month or so. 5% fat mince is fine, no different to any other supermarket. The chicken breasts have been fine too. I've had the nicest beef joint I've cooked at home from Lidl and we've also had delicious legs of lamb. All seems exactly the same as Morrisons (where I shopped before).

I purposely drive to a bigger Lidl about 15mins away because they seem to have the same stuff in the same place. Our local one is smaller and can be a little random at times.

Things we like less...

  • Nespresso compatible coffee capsules (DH prefers the Aldi ones)
  • Marmalade (again DH prefers the Aldi one)

Other things we love...

  • multigrain crackers
  • low GI cob
  • Danpak (Lurpak equivalent) spread
  • Chocolate chip brioche

We get our washing powder from Amazon - a big family pack of persil non bio for £20 ish and it lasts literally a whole year! Even with mucky lot.

I hate the toilet roll shop, it's so bloody expensive so will deffo try Lidl's.

Agree about the fruit and veg - had a couple of very bad batches of apples where they were mostly rotten but today are some of their fresh sweet corn which was delicious and 80p for two massive ones!

The 5% fat minced steak is excellent. I buy a lot of meat in Lidl and the quality is very good. My chef brother buys meat there too.

BarbaraofSevillle · 19/08/2018 21:05

Meat is very good. Probably better than Tesco and Asda and on a par with Morrisons and Sainsburys.

Lidl (and Aldi) is cheaper mostly because of the small stores, small ranges, fewer staff, shorter opening hours, no home delivery or massive non food selection, except the specials of course, that sort of thing, not due to reduced quality. Totally different business model.

Hogtini · 19/08/2018 21:10

Chicken breasts are good, Serrano ham, the massive tubs of greek yoghurt, sourdough pizzas, mussells with cider & chorizo, butter. Random but if you like Kinder Buenos they do an amazing copy.

LockedOutOfMN · 19/08/2018 21:15

Bread and bakery products

Yoghurts - I think the brand is Milbona (or similar)

Wine

CremeDeSudo · 19/08/2018 21:15

We also buy as much as possible in Lidl then everything else in Tesco.

Fruit and veg is hit n miss. I categorically won't buy strawberries from Lidl now as they're quite often already mouldy.

We get all meat and fish from Lidl, no complaints. I stock up on their salmon when reduced and their luxury chicken is lovely for Sunday dinners!

Pinkstars2501 · 19/08/2018 21:34

Bakery cheese twist! I love them, I could eat the whole rack of them.

HairyButtMonkey · 19/08/2018 22:22

Lidl do v cheap massive bottles of dishwasher rinse aid which last for months. Also their jars of whole preserved bell peppers are great for pasta sauces. Good parmesan cheese too

WhenTheSharkBites · 19/08/2018 22:25

The meat is absolutely fine and if you go after 8pm/early morning you can usually find a 30% off pile in the meat fridges for produce soon to go out of date. I stockpile and freeze immediately. Recently I bought nearly 5kg of chicken breast for around £8 because it was all reduced

WhenTheSharkBites · 19/08/2018 22:26

The only thing I don't buy from Lidl is nappies, wipes and dishwasher tablets. Aldi are much better for those

ChishandFips33 · 19/08/2018 22:31

I've switched too and find their beef and cooked meats great

I buy their organic carrots, pink lady apples and grapes

Boiled potatoes in the tray

Their own brand seeded buns are lovely and doughy and have converted DH

white chocolate - the cheapy

Lightly salted crackers, crisps are fine

Gluten free range has been introduced and is cheaper for floor than Tesco

I've bought potatoes before and found them to be rotten - I emailed just to let them know (not complain) and I was told to take receipt (and email) to store next time I was in and they would refund

I now flit between Aldi and Lidl - rarely do the big name shops now

ginghamstarfish · 19/08/2018 22:33

The meat is fine, but for mince I buy only the best one (Aberdeen Angus) and it's always excellent, much better than Tesco or Sainsbury's. Chocolate, cereals, tinned goods olives, cheeses, all good!

MsFrosty · 19/08/2018 22:53

The Greek yogurt is immense and the piri piri spatchock chicken is great too

RedPandaMama · 19/08/2018 23:04

We get everything from Lidl. Dried goods like crisps and cereals are very similar to brands but about a quarter of the price. The bakery is fantastic, try the 15p rolls or the blueberry filled muffins, gorgeous.
We get all our meat from there and I'm really impressed with it. The chicken breasts and thighs are always long dated and always have far less bloody bits and stringy bits than Asda chicken (where we used to shop). Sainsbury's is on par or maybe slightly nicer but you pay the difference. The mid-range steaks are fantastic, we get two sirloin for about £5.50 and they are lovely. Fruit and veg all good.
Other random favourites are chunky chicken and veg soup, nappies, wipes and pouches for the baby, cat food/little/meat sticks all cheap and our cat loves them, the fizzy elderflower sugar free drink and blackcurrant squash better than branded stuff and both about 45p each.

I love Lidl. We've lived a 3 minute walk from one for the past year and I'm sad because we're moving at the end of the year and there isn't one nearby, so it's going to be Aldi instead.

myidentitymycrisis · 20/08/2018 08:54

I like the Parmesan, honey, wine, olive oil, anti pasti, dark chocolate, specialty cheese, veg is cheaper. I just get what looks good.

I’m not a fan of the cleaning products.

I love their multivitamin juice

Bubba1234 · 20/08/2018 08:58

Cheese all types

yikesanotherbooboo · 20/08/2018 09:12

Fresh bread/ croissants etc
Butter and 'everyday' cheese
Cleaning products
Fruit and veg is hit and miss but can be very good if you don't plan and just buy things that look good on the day

yikesanotherbooboo · 20/08/2018 09:13

Cooked meats from Germany or other European countries are also very good

SoupDragon · 20/08/2018 09:15

Try everything and then don’t buy stuff again if you don’t like it.

These threads always have people contradicting each other about what’s nice and what isn’t so it’s all down to personal taste. Quality of fruit and veg seems to vary greatly between stores too.

heslimedme · 20/08/2018 17:57

Mr slimed me is going this evening with a long list of supplies for the week. Hooray!
