Where to move too - up north

Hi all, would love some personal opinions and advice on where to go.

Currently live in London, and looking to move out before we start a family as tbh we're both fed up of London.

Our jobs are portable, we can work from home all the time, so commuting isn't a worry however we do like to go find libraries, cafes and parks to sit and work in as well.

We are thinking of moving well out of the South East, and heading north.
We really like city living but then love hiking / and being out and about as much as possible.

At the moment we are thinking of Newcastle, Leeds, Huddersfield.

My family lives in hull so we don't want to be too far from them, maximum 2 and a half hours.
Our budget would be 300k max, prefer 250k.

It would definitely be Newcastle way for me. Personally, I think I'd go somewhere like Hexham, which is beautiful and just a short drive from Newcastle. I live in Cumbria but would move to the North East like a shot if I could as the people are a lot friendlier and having a proper city like Newcastle makes a big difference to a county. I have also found York to be a lot rougher the last few times I've visited, I was quite shocked to be honest - and, formerly, I was a big fan.

Doncaster or Goole Smile

Unfortunately you wouldn’t get a period detached property in Hexham with a garden for £300k - good sized period terrace, yes! While I work in Newcastle i don’t know the areas very well .....

Hexham’s choices....

Newer Build

Terrace/good area

semi good area small garden

semi 1930 small garden

The south side of Leeds is much more reasonable OP. Try Morley, Rothwell, Tingley, or slightly further south towards Wakefield.

Sorry @Defrack Sad

But if you go to Zoopla and create your own search area around the West of Leeds, using their map function, you'll find loads of properties well within your price bracket.

Thanks @biwi.

Yorkshire is lovely I’m from Yorkshire but now live in Lincolnshire which is worth considering some really lovely areas and you can get a lot of house for your money. Not far from Hull either.

Defrack · 19/08/2018 18:30

Thanks for the ideas.

West Northumberland is a really lovely place to live. 20-25mins from Newcastle city centre and have all the beautiful countryside around you

Defrack · 19/08/2018 21:31

@missnena. Sounds amazing, would prefer to be within 15 to 20 minutes of city centre? Is that possible?

MargaretDribble · 19/08/2018 21:33

Why don't you just opt for Beverley OP?

Defrack · 19/08/2018 21:35

small, isn't a city which we want, too close to family Grin

I live on the coast off Newcastle. Having been to York at the weekend I have to say York Hen and Stag culture was very prominent and like nothing I have seen in Newcastle.

Yy to Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. Whitley Bay is very up and coming. I think investment wise Cullercoats would be an excellent buy. I can’t remember if up have children but all local primary schools are outstanding, very good middles and secondary schools, 3 soft plays, nice library, a couple of parks, beach, community cinema, good restaurants, cafe, a few quirky bars and micro breweries and metro station all within walking distance

MissNena · 19/08/2018 21:50

Yes it is possible 20mins from Hexham or Acomb as mentioned by pp. then there is other little villages on the route to Newcastle (corbridge, stockfield, riding mill) it really is a lovely area

RandomMess · 19/08/2018 22:28

I live in the NW but for visits to Hull def stick to the Eastern side of the country!!

RandomMess · 19/08/2018 22:56

Also don't rely on the A1M for traveling regularly!!!

Defrack · 19/08/2018 23:57

@anotherangel. Wow thanks so much, just looking at the area now.

@randommess. Oh god yes, travelled on that for work a few times and it's not fun.

The answer is obviously Beverley

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 20/08/2018 00:06

We're looking in the pit villages in the triangle Morpeth-Amble-Blyth for downsizing. Found some beauties around the 100-120k mark. Very nicely upgraded terraces, most of them with log burners.

Feltcushion · 20/08/2018 02:25

I would avoid Harrogate. Expensive. Lots of house building when roads are already very congested (changed totally in past 10 years)

The piss up culture from York and Leeds is now prevalent at the weekend. Come up from South/West Yorkshire- drink all day- last train to Leeds- nightclub- 1st train home. It is pretty awful at the weekends with drunken incommers.

MinaPaws · 20/08/2018 07:21

Whitley Bay is gorgeous. If you don't mind terraced houses this sort of house is often set in a paved car free street. there are wide backlanes for car access but the streets themselves are just wide, tree lined pavements with long front gardens. Really beautiful. The beach is on your doorstep. Great cafes, cinema, farmer's market, community gardens, metro into city. The houses have light, spacious rooms with loads of period features.

anotherangel2 · 20/08/2018 20:16

Just re-read my post and realised it maybe confusing. I was describing Whitley Bay but Cullercoats is next door and is lovely too they are walking distance to each other.

MikeUniformMike · 20/08/2018 20:21

Sheffield or York?
