Judging by name

There are a few threads about names for children, and invariably people associate names with character or style (old-fashioned, dull, frumpy, chav etc).
It got me to thinking about the phenomenon of making assumptions based on a name. I know it's illogical and wrong to do this, but I believe it's commonplace.

Sometimes we associate a name with a past experience involving a namesake. Sometimes good, often bad.

What's the name that gets your back up right away (and why), or gives you a warm fuzzy feeling (and why)?

Susan - first girlfriend's name and I invariably tend to see Susan's as mellow and friendly

Sharon - I can never really get past an 80's big hair image, but at the same time imagine Ozzy Osbourne's 'Shaaaaarrrrrooooon'.

I teach, there are so many...
Jordan is always a naughty boy, so is George, but they also tend to have middle class, pushy parents who make excuses for them.

I’m also suspicious of girls who are named after reality TV or pop stars.

ToadOfSadness · 18/08/2018 13:42

Susan, girl at school, very proud of herself and her long hair, a real bitch to anyone that wasn't her friend Janet. Fortunately don't meet Susans these days, they seem to have died out.

As for warm and fuzzy names, I’ve known many a lovely Oliver.

WhatsYourFuckingProblem · 18/08/2018 13:46

Daisy and Alice, these names make me cringe and I don’t know why. They just make me think of little girls with pigtails who who speak with a lisp and cry at everything.

Jason, cool boy at Primary School- always my target when we played kiss chase!

tobee · 18/08/2018 13:50

Kirsty. Always had green snot in her nose at primary.

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 13:52

lol green snot - every school had one of those!

I associate the name Julie with a certain type of fun-loving, yet down to earth and quite 'strong' woman, because all the Julies I have known have been like that.

Mumshotel · 18/08/2018 13:59

Lisa I associate with smelly hair.

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 13:59

Even though I know it's wrong, it means someone has to work a little harder to overcome their name, whilst someone else gets a head start.

Crazy really isn't it?

Do we equate it to intelligence and status too? (I think we do)

Mumshotel · 18/08/2018 13:59

Austin I associate with snot and dirt

Madmarchpear · 18/08/2018 14:00

Gemma is always a slightly neglected shabby looking kid in my mind's eye.
Jonathan a little swot.
I can't imagine a Ben could ever be anything but delightful.

Clairetree1 · 18/08/2018 14:02

names with punctuation in them

dread seeing that on the register for the new year.....

Coconutcake0 · 18/08/2018 14:04

Jaydens, Dwaynes, Leroys, Kaynes, the ones i know are little shits. Thankfully there aren’t many.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 18/08/2018 14:06

Camille. A real stuck up mean girl.

Her nickname was 'Mealy' which made me feel slightly more benevolent towards her.

BasicUsername · 18/08/2018 15:30

To me Claires are mean bullies.

CutesyUserName · 18/08/2018 15:32

Pamela - terrible BO.
Lucy - all the Lucy's I've known are pretty.
Scott - badly behaved.

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 15:52

Reading most of these names, I find myself immediately visualising whoever I know with that name, and getting a 'vibe' right away. Is that typical?

OP posts:
xFreePeaceSweetx · 18/08/2018 16:09

To me Claires are mean bullies Ditto. Worked with two who were utter bitches.
I've never met a Toby I didn't like.

CranjisMcBasketball · 18/08/2018 16:13

I read on one of these threads that my name is a fat name. It is. I'm fat as are the three other women I personally know with my name.

PattiStanger · 18/08/2018 16:25

I can't believe there are any Jordans with middle class parents.

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 16:31

Maybe there is a correlation between socio-economic circles and names, and that leads to lifestyles...

I meant 'Tristram' or 'Tristan' is probably more prevalent in some circles whilst 'Sharon' or 'Tracy' could be in others. I doubt there's a huge correlation in behaviours based on the name, but maybe environmental factors.

Hmmm

Going against the grain with Claire, I've never met a Claire who wasn't lovely. I had three Gemmas in my classes in high school and they were all arseholes. Rachels are sporty.

TornFromTheInside · 18/08/2018 16:38

Would be quite interesting to do a league table of these names!

OP posts:
flumpybear · 18/08/2018 17:29

Marnie I hate and Maria - both are trrrible bullies and total c*unts in my life and many other people's lives - literally the dregs if the earth!

Jennifer is a bit wet as is Jessica which reminds me of frank Spencer Confused

The only names I hear that make my tummy get butterflies are children or adults with the same
Name as my children ❤️
