“Year 5 - the year you need to stock up the fridge”

I was told this the other day as one of my sons is going into year 5. Is it a known year for growth spurts? Apart from the baby phase I haven’t really paid attention to what kind of age he may have had the biggest growth spurts. Just intrigued if year 5 is one or any other years that people have noticed. Thanks.

DD2 was in year 5 last year and has probably grown 6 inches. And yes has /is eating more then she did.

Ds is going into year 5 this year ans if he grows the same way DD2 has then I will definitely be shortest person in the house.

I couldn't tell with dd1 as she just grew constantly until now when she seems to have slowed down now she is nearly 15.

My DH is always shocked when he looks in the fridge when I have been shopping at how much food there is and then again 4 days later when most of it has been eaten.

Pibplob · 17/08/2018 15:06

Ah, sounds like it may be true then! Wow, 6 inches is a big growth spurt over a year. He will be very happy if he was to grow that much!

I would say that it is the girls who growth spurt y5-8, but many boys don't even start until y7/y8. The y7 boys often look tiny compared with the girls.

Yeah that’s true. Girls do start earlier don’t they! Maybe I have a few years to save up for the extra food and clothes then!

Anyone any boy experience in year 5?

My DS is going In to year 5 and is tiny and underweight (not for the want of trying) so I’m hoping this is true. His younger sister is currently much taller than him.

Enko · 18/08/2018 19:28

All of mine (boys and girls) grew in year 5 yes.. DS less than his sisters who were all the tallest in their years DS was tall but not the tallest. In year 8 and 9 however he really started packing it in and now about to start year 12 he is still going, where his sisters didnt continue.

This thread title made my laugh. DSis going into Y5 in a couple of weeks, and I swear he has not stopped eating for about 3 months. He’s grown 2 inches and 2 shoe sizes since May half term. I risked it and bought school shoes today. And another £50 worth food!

I have not noticed any growth spurts in yr5. I have 4 DC including 3 DSs, youngest just finished yr5. I'm trying to think when did a big growth spurt happen... about age 13? Adult eldest was born titchy & is now 6'1". Only my babies grew as much as 6"/yr.

Pibplob · 18/08/2018 22:08

We got school shoes today and he has gone up 2 sizes since last September when we last bought them. I hope his feet don’t grow much quicker than that this year! 😳

My ds (10) has just finished year 5...I bought him some new school trousers this week..they are age 12! He is always hungry.

formerbabe · 18/08/2018 22:13

He eats adult sized portions and lots of snacks too...and is in no way overweight.

TowerRingInferno · 18/08/2018 22:55

DS went through 2 sizes of school uniform in y5. However it was y7 when the eating vast amounts of food seemed to kick in.

My DS too. Lucky thing! 12” pizza - no probs! With a jacket spud!

Pibplob · 19/08/2018 09:51

Maybe year 5 is the start of it all then? He will love it if it is a growth spurt year. I just need to be ready with the extra money for it! 😂

The boys in Y5 are mostly tiddlers. In fact they start secondary school as tiddlers and don't really seem to grow until y9.
Some of the girls on the other hand leave primary school taller than their teachers.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 19/08/2018 10:20

Actually yes Iv noticed my now going into year 6 girl has grown. She’s taller and her hips have widened. She’s still skinny! She has started getting breast buds too! Argh :(

MeetOnTheLedge · 19/08/2018 10:28

My DD had a massive spurt then but DS saved his for year 8/9. However it was from about year 5 that we suddenly realised we were shopping for all adult appetites rather than two adults/two children and children's menus gradually fell out of use when eating out. Expensive times for shoes and clothes too.

Pibplob · 19/08/2018 21:17

Well, I’m now ready for it! 😂 and by the looks of it I’m also expecting it in a few years when my daughter starts year 5. Sounds like it will be a bigger growth spurt time for her. However by then my son will be in year 8 and my other son year 6 so sounds like that will really be the year to save the pennies!!

SadieHH · 19/08/2018 21:21

DD1 is going into year 6 and it's definitely the girls that started sprouting last year. The boys mostly are still little with a couple of exceptions but the girls are like different children to their end of year 4 selves.

Llareggub · 19/08/2018 21:23

My son started shooting up in year 5. He is going into year 7 at 5 foot 5 (my height) and he has filled out. My younger son is going into year 5. They don't stop eating.

bluerunningshoes · 19/08/2018 21:32

true for my dc. they changed from squishy and cuddly to lanky, smelly and 'mum you are emareassing' during y5

ALemonyPea · 19/08/2018 21:34

I have three boys, and I cannot buy their new school uniforms u TIL the very end of the school holidays as they always have a growth spurt during the holidays. Last year DS3 went up two shoe sizes in 6 weeks.

They are eating me out of house and home as well. It costs me a
Fortune in food, it's cheaper then being at school.

ALemonyPea · 19/08/2018 21:34

*until

Pibplob · 20/08/2018 14:42

Ahhh. I don’t want the change from
Cuddly and cute to lanky and smelly!
