“Year 5 - the year you need to stock up the fridge”

I was told this the other day as one of my sons is going into year 5. Is it a known year for growth spurts? Apart from the baby phase I haven’t really paid attention to what kind of age he may have had the biggest growth spurts. Just intrigued if year 5 is one or any other years that people have noticed. Thanks.

My daughter (about to start Year 6) is still a shrimp, about to be overtaken by her almost-Year-3 sister. She’s been due a growth spurt for years! She does pack away the food though, I have no idea where she puts it.

I think I ate far more as a 9 year old than I eat now. I can remember being constantly hungry - I'd eat bowls of cereal around my (3 course) meals, have school dinner and a full cooked tea when I got home, followed by more cereal.

I was always skinny too.

There's no way I could eat all that now!

Pibplob · 20/08/2018 15:09

I know! They don’t realise how lucky they are to be able to eat all this food and not get fat! Wish I was still
Growing.

They're going to grow faster? Shock I don't think my bank balance can take it.

DD1 is about to go into Y4. She's grown so much over the holidays, has outgrown her school shoes (brand new at summer half term) and trousers. But she's so lanky - she's just growing taller not broader. If she grows faster in Y5 she's going to be taller than me before she's even in Y6.

Onthebrink87 · 20/08/2018 15:31

I have one leaving year 5 and one going into year 5 (both boys) but I honestly haven't noticed any big growth spurts. Dreading it though because they are fairly athletic and active kids and even without the growth spurts they eat me out of house and home! (Although ds who's just 5 has them beat! He eats more than me and his brothers he's an 'absolute unit' Hmm I've been told but not at all over weight but he is having a spurt!)

Cablestitch · 20/08/2018 15:33

My DS is just going into Year 6 and he has been eating insane amounts since the start of Yr 5. He is really slim, you can see all his ribs and count the knobs on his spine and it's really hard to find clothes slim enough to fit him. But his idea of dinner is 2 chicken breasts, 3 baked potatoes plus a load of green veg or carrots, and still room to want fruit or yoghurt and a biscuit. Breakfast is eggs, toast, 2 bowls of cereal and a piece of fruit. I feel I can't complain about it as he drinks plenty of water and no squashes etc, and doesn't eat much junk. He's very much meat/fish plus potatoes and veg but he eats loads of it. I've no idea where it goes but he is quite active and he is growing. Costs a bomb though!

As I said earlier dd2 has shot up in yr 5. He PE kit at the beginning of Yr 5 her top was a 7 -8 and her shorts were a 5 - 6 she was always a tiny little thing, when she finished Yr 5 her PE shorts are age 10 and her top was 11 - 12. Luckily for us we had her older sister PE kit she could use.

Just consulted my kitchen wall, it doesn’t go back quite that far but I don’t think DS grew that much particularly in year 5 though was fairly tall by then. He has gone up in fits and starts over the last few years, mostly in the summers.

I know when he’s about to grow as he is unwakeable, goes all spotty and is permanently found with his head in a kitchen cupboard or the fridge.

Pibplob · 20/08/2018 16:10

Wow clutter bugs! From what others have said it seems that girls have the biggest growth spurt in year 5. It will be interesting to see if he does really grow. And in a few years I will definitely be ready for my daughter to have a huge growth spurt. I wonder if the lady who told me this had a daughter or a son! I assumed a son but who knows! She laughed as she said it 😂

God I hope not! 9 year old dd is already taller than her 11 yr old sister and her feet only one size smaller than mine. She already eats everything she sees!!!

ScrambledSmegs · 20/08/2018 17:12

Actually DD1 has a friend (also 8yo) who already wears the same shoe size as me. I am not a dainty-footed woman.

Pibplob · 20/08/2018 17:38

Motortroll my son is a shoe size smaller than me too (aged 9) but he’s not particularly tall. Prob just about average maybe a bit smaller. I’m wondering if the large feet mean he’s likely to be tall.

I personally feel I now walk around in my own hole as now nearly all 3 kids are taller then me.

youarenotkiddingme · 20/08/2018 18:26

My ds didn't have a growth spurt in year 5.

He had a brilliant one in year 9 though (well started in yr 8 but slower!)

He started yr 8 a size 4 shoe and 150cm tall.

He's ended yr 9 a size 8 and 172cm tall.

Tesco and aldi can thank him personally for a huge chunk of this years profits Grin

AJPTaylor · 20/08/2018 19:59

Dd has always been tall. She has done nothing but grow this year. She has finished year 5 at 5'2" with size 7 feet. Taller than me. And indeed her year 5 teacher. She wears age 14 clothes where we can get them. Its not huge fun looking like you are 14 when you are 10

SwaylorTift · 20/08/2018 20:08

Upper KS2 teacher here. Yr5 is much more often a growth spurt for the girls rather than the boys I find. That said a lot of the boys shoot up a lot around this time too just not as many of them.

Upper KS2 teacher here too. I notice the growth spurt over the summer holidays between y5 and y6, and then in year 6, not particularly in Year 5. I wouldn’t agree that year 5 was a year in which they noticeably grow, although they continue to lose their baby faces.
As a side issue, I’d say 10-20% of them are verging on overweight, or are overweight. Bit too padded for junior school children. It’s a pity as it clearly slows them down during sport and play.

FogCutter · 20/08/2018 20:27

My son and most of his friends didn't grow much in y5.

He's grown loads (and eaten loads!) towards the end of Y6 though!

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 20/08/2018 22:02

My ds (8) has grown abit. He’s put abit if weight on but not overweight. I don’t know how tbh, he runs at School and like today he’s been out playing from 12-8pm

Pibplob · 25/09/2018 18:37

Well in the last 4 weeks he has grown 1.5cm 😳. Seems crazy but maybe it will slow down now.
