You can't wash bathmats

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2018 15:59

So the washing machine engineer tells me.
So what does one do? Disposable ones? Use hand towels? Just let them get dirtier and dirtier?
Apparently the bathmat was why the machine 'walked'.

I was once told by an engineer sent by the manufacturer that there was nothing wrong with my tumble dryer, I was just being unreasonable in expecting it to dry things Grin. He said I should just use it to get them partially dry, then hang them out on the line.
I told him it used to dry things fine, and he said ‘I’m not sure why, they don’t usually’. WTF?!

theunsure · 16/08/2018 16:12

Eh?! I wash ours at least weekly. What a load of twaddle! Ignore him

MonsteraDeliciosa · 16/08/2018 16:12

That's ridiculous. Washing machines "walk" because they're not properly levelled and need a foot / feet slightly adjusting.

Your bathmat looks eminently washable to me.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 16/08/2018 16:14

And my tumble dryer gets things bone dry!

Where are you all finding these clueless tradesmen??Confused

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 16/08/2018 16:15

utter mongoose

My new insult.

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2018 16:16

Maybe that is the issue. The thing leaked because of another fault and I wondered if I was overloading it. Because that mat is heavy I started washing it on its own and maybe its unbalanced. When I sneakily wash it this time I'll put some thing else in.
Or ill spray some frbreeze on it and put it back down Hmm

Well as every other tumble dryer I’ve owned got things completely dry (including that one until it made a funny noise and stopped working, which was the reason I called him out), I obviously didn’t take him too seriously! It was still under warranty so I suspect he just didn’t want to replace it with a new one.
I phoned the manufacturer and they agreed it was ridiculous and replaced it!

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2018 16:17

There is nothing nicer than standing on a crisp dry bathmat in a clean bathroom . I'm goi g to go and do it now.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2018 16:18

Lol soy I missed that. You had a tumble damper.
The more expensive machines we've had have usually broken their bearing within a couple of years or whatever. They're all crap

FlatPackFurnitureCompAnyone · 16/08/2018 16:18

I think you've been a victim of faulty mansplaining ⬅️⬅️ This!

And Grin at SoyDora.

A workman came to our house while I was out and explained to DPnthat the window that didn’t close properly couldn’t be fixed and we would just have to live with it, because absolutely nothing could be done.

When I came home and heard this I was Hmm, got on the phone and asked the maintenance company whether that meant the house would need to be demolished and rebuilt in order to have a house with a properly functioning window.

They sent someone else who repaired it within about 5 minutes!!!

Some people just can’t be arsed doing a proper job and will say the first thing that comes into their head, however nonsensical, to try to get out of it GrinGrinGrin

TroysMammy · 16/08/2018 16:18

I have some that take 3 days to dry. They are so heavy when wet the machine can't spin them properly. I've just bought some lightweight ones today from Home Bargains. Hoping they dry quicker.

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2018 16:20

Heaven. I wish I could also send the smell. Flash bathroom.

"whether that meant the house would need to be demolished and rebuilt in order to have a house with a properly functioning window." :o

Butteredparsn1ps · 16/08/2018 16:21

Is it something to do with the weight of the thicker ones one they are wet? I have got a couple that are too heavy to spin properly, so I have to put them on a low spin and then a faster one.

I tend to buy thinner ones now for an easy life.

mumsastudent · 16/08/2018 16:22

place bath mat in old thin pillow case (old nylon ones even better) tie a knot in case & do gentle but hot wash

InfiniteVariety · 16/08/2018 16:22

It's just a towel, only thicker so of course you can (and must) wash it

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2018 16:23

How would that help mum's?

OP posts:
UpstartCrow · 16/08/2018 16:24

We just use old hand towels now, they're less hassle to balance in the machine.

StealthPolarBear · 16/08/2018 16:24

That was my th ought crow but I will not admit defeat

OP posts:
borntobequiet · 16/08/2018 16:25

In my experience, some (I'm sure not all) washing machine engineers are trained to tell you a pack of lies rather than admit the machine is faulty.

Blatherskite · 16/08/2018 16:27

What rubbish. That bath mat is totally washable. How else does he think the things get clean?

Sometimes I wish we used Germany's system. Over there "Engineer" is a protected job title applicable only to someone with an engineering degree who is actually able to understand how these things work. That man was a "Technician" much like the BT technician who came round once to tell me that my phone line had stopped working because of the "green mould" which only grew on metal and had eaten away the connections in the box outside my house. He also told me how housewives always wanted to sleep with him Hmm

He meant rust. And I didn't take him up on his offer.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 16/08/2018 16:28

The story of the tumble non-dryer reminds me of when my mother got the bathroom fixed. Within a short space of time it leaked into the kitchen below, to the extent she had to have the walls repapered and the ceiling repaired and painted.

When the plumber who had installed it came back to repair it he claimed it was my fault for washing my hair in the shower. (No idea where I was supposed to wash it, or how, in the week or so I'd been visiting I'd managed to spread that much water about the place I don't know!).

Turned out there was a pipe under the bath which he hadn't tightened properly.

She had the same problem a few months later. Don't think her insurance company was too thrilled. This time it turned out he hadn't sealed the bath in properly. Don't think my hair was blamed that time, though.

BlueBug45 · 16/08/2018 16:28

My current washing machine isn't expensive and I had a bath mat similar to that. I had no problems washing it in my current or old machine, but sometimes it wouldn't spin properly so I had to re-spin it. Anyway it took too long to dry and was smaller than some newer ones I bought so I found a cat who like to sit on it, and gave it to her.

CloudCaptain · 16/08/2018 16:31

YouTube to be prepared to lie lie lie with washing machine engineers. Make sure you give the filters a clean and claim you do it after every wash. Only ever wash the correct load amount, etc, etc. Even then I was told my condenser tumbler was filling the room with steam because the (adequately sized) utility room was too small, it needed to be in a large room like my lounge. Hmm

mumsastudent · 16/08/2018 16:33

no fluff should get into machine & if its on slow wash its less likely to get out of balance (have several bath mats & do a few each in its own little pillow case) re tumble drying I have always dried them outside to get fresh smell
