Reposted from the 'what are we reading' topic. I'm impatient and need to order something ASAP!

What other books would you recommend? It's for a friend who is bed bound. She loves fantasy, Game of thrones etc

The divergent series

aaahhhBump · 15/08/2018 20:59

Mercy Thompson universe by Patricia Briggs.

Loved these.

Chopsypie · 15/08/2018 21:00

Dresden Files.

Anything by Brandon Sanderson (especially Mistborn)

Chopsypie · 15/08/2018 21:00

Oh and a discovery of witches by Deborah Harkness.

TheHalfBloodPrincess · 15/08/2018 21:01

Stephanie Meyer also wrote a book called The Host.

I’ve read the twilight series, and it’s not something I would re-read, but I’ve read The Host about 10 times. A really lovely read.

GuntyMcGee · 15/08/2018 21:09

I second The Host. A far better read than Twilight

Linzbe · 15/08/2018 21:17

There is a series of book by Michael Grant which I loved, very sci-fi style. In order;
Gone.

Hunger.

Lies.

Plague.

Fear.

Light.

Monster.

Sam Temple.

Just seen there are 2 more than I thought so I'm off to buy the last 2!!

SweepTheHalls · 15/08/2018 21:19

St Mary's Chronicles

Harpstrings · 15/08/2018 21:31

The Dresden Files.

iamthere123 · 15/08/2018 21:36

Seconding the Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs!

I’ve just been reading Daughter of Smoke and Bones by Laini Taylor and I can also recommend six of crows (can’t remember who by) sigh I’m very in love with the lead character in that!

MarthaArthur · 15/08/2018 21:39

Oh anything by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Shadow of the wind and midnight palace are amazing.

7YearsOfBlood · 15/08/2018 21:42

Linzbe - My copy of Monster's just arrived! Love that series.

The Deptford Mice and The Deptfod Histories serieseseses by Robin Jarvis are also good - not quite in the same vein as Twilight but quite mature in their content given they are aimed at YA.

DailyMailcanfuckthefuckoff · 15/08/2018 21:48

If she's into fantasy, she will LOVE a trilogy by Laini Taylor that I started reading after seeing a recommendation on here! It mixes a fantasy and reality really well. I can't recommend it enough.
Book 1 - Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Book 2 - Days of Blood and Starlight
Book 3 - A Dream of Gods and Monsters

She could also try Sarah J. Maas' Throne of Glass series - we're now waiting on book 7 (the final book, to be published in Oct this year). It's being adapted into a tv series, but they'll be using the title Queen of Shadows (title of another book in the series - producers were worried about confusion with Game of Thrones). Ideally she should read the novellas first (although not essential), and the first book is called Throne of Glass.

serbska · 15/08/2018 21:51

All of the true blood (sookie stackhouse) books.

The Hellequin chronicles books. The first is very badly written but they get better and better and better if you can stick it out.

Dresden files series.

Any of the Neil Gaiman books but especially unlondon.

WinterBabyIsComing · 15/08/2018 21:52

Garth Nix Abhorsen series

serbska · 15/08/2018 21:53

I’m saving this thread for recommendations. Thanks everyone.

BTW I didn’t really like twilight very much, it’s a bit racist almost the way it keeps banging on about white is so pure. Fucks me off. Also I hate heroes and heroines who are weak and need rescuring by their man-protector.

Sookie stakhouse kicks ass as well as gets rescued :-)

defineme · 15/08/2018 21:54

I third the true blood books which have a far more appealing heroine than Twilight!

DailyMailcanfuckthefuckoff · 15/08/2018 21:55

Ahhhhhh yes @Winter how did I forget about Garth Nix?! It's one of my favourite series!

Fooferella · 15/08/2018 21:57

I've just finished the Darkest London series by Kristen Callihan. It's quite formulaic but very enjoyable and WAY steamier than Twilight.

CaseFace30 · 15/08/2018 22:01

Delirium by Lauren Oliver was amazing!

3 books in the series.

"There was a time when love was the most important thing in the world. People would go to the end of the earth to find it. They would tell lies for it. Even kill for it.
But now love has been declared a dangerous disease.
Everyone who turns eighteen must be immunised with a procedure called the Cure. Lena Haloway is looking forward to being able to live the safe, predictable life the government claims the cure will bring. But meeting Alex, an enigmatic boy from the Wilds, might just make her question everything she's been raised to believe."

strawberrypenguin · 15/08/2018 22:15

I didn't love Twilight but I do like fantasy books Kelley Armstrong's 'Women of the Otherworld' series is great.

RiverTam · 15/08/2018 22:17

The early True Blood books are very enjoyable but in the later ones Sookie appears to have lost her sense of humour which was disappointing.

Not this kind of fantasy but Ben Aaronovich’s Rivers of London series is great.
