Braces - How much did you pay?

My 14 year old has a tooth growing too far back, it looks as though she is missing a tooth. She is eligible for NHS braces, however our county doesn’t offer this on the NHS.

Therefore the only option is private treatment to the cost of £3k! Is this reasonable?? She needs them now however will have to wait 6 months for me to pay the 50% up front required cost.

Is it a fixed or removable brace?

DS had a removable brace to push a front tooth forward and it was £400 for a removable brace. That includes everything.
For fixed braces the cost here in s.yorks is around £2k.

Sounds reasonable to me (sadly, as one who has had to go down the private route). However did manage to get an interest free monthly payment plan i.e. standing order to orthodontist.

perhapstomorrow · 13/08/2018 21:09

My dd has a fixed brace and had 4 teeth removed as she has overcrowding. It is costing us just over £3k. We are within m25 area.

My adult DS has a fixed brace and it cost £4K. We're in Kent.

ramonaquimby · 13/08/2018 21:13

We paid just under 4K 2 years ago for a 14 year old. So pleased next child has qualified for NHS treatment! Sussex

Ginorchoc · 13/08/2018 21:18

It’s fixed brace, however they have said she needs a track on each set, lower and upper to line them up, the rest of her teeth are straight. We are seeing another orthodontist tomorrow for a second opinion. It does need sorting out. Fairgame the option you had sounds a sensible route, I’ll mention that tomorrow thank you.

The orthodontist also said she’ll need them for up to 18 months/2 years. If she would let me put a picture up I would. Other than the one tooth they look pretty decent.

Seems a high price, if she has to have it so be it. Unfortunately the one today only offers a payment plan on 50% deposit, payment plan for the remainder. It is however interest free.

Apparently they’ve stopped offering it on the NHS now in our county. I asked what happens if I couldn’t pay and they said she wouldn’t be treated. We can be referred out of county however it’s up to two years waiting list and she would have to have time of school (and I’d need to take time off work) it would be at least a 4 hour round trip each time.

Cost for upper and lower fixed for teenage child within M25 was £2700. Fairly simple brace it seems. Teeth weren’t eligible for NHS sadly.

MissTulipan · 13/08/2018 21:24

The other perk of private is late apt times so no time off school or work to take to apt.

OverByYer · 13/08/2018 21:29

£1,800 for fixed top and bottom.
Orthodontist used smaller brace parts than NHS.
Service was fantastic too.

WingingWonder · 13/08/2018 21:29

We have a dentist in Sainsburys who is ‘affirdable private’ I was sceptical but so far they’ve been great with open till 8pm and offer interest free payments in all treatment over I think it’s £300, worth seeing if one local to you? Called Centre of dentistry

OverByYer · 13/08/2018 21:30

Shop around though, big differences in prices in my local orthodontists.

BertieBeats · 13/08/2018 21:30

I have a fixed brace for 2-3 years and has cost me £3,900. I had a few gaps to close ,alignment sorted etc... That does also include the retainer and permanent retainer afterwards.

BertieBeats · 13/08/2018 21:32

Might have been more expensive than other orthodontist's but I trust him 100% and he has a long waiting list as he's renowned for his good work.

Ginorchoc · 13/08/2018 21:32

Argh oh well, although they look relatively easy to make, super glue and wire, wonder if I can make some Grin

The one we saw today doesn’t offer appointments past 4 pm which is frustrating.

Ginorchoc · 13/08/2018 21:35

I think I’m going to phone a few for prices, the one we saw today was recommended, very plush embossed brochures and building. Which might add to their cost.

It's worth asking about a removable brace but DS only needed one tooth to move and only had the brace on the top row.
This is what he looked like prior to the brace just to give you an idea of what needed to be fixed for comparison. The right tooth used to sit behind the bottom row when he put his teeth together.

If your near S Wales I’d highly recommend where we went.

Ginorchoc · 13/08/2018 21:56

Hers is even further back, she had a shark tooth situation, I’m going to mention it as nothing to lose. X

I’m on Lincoln’s/Notts border but thank you anyway. We have been referred to York for NHS treatment. Seems unfair on Children in York to be fighting for treatment with children outside the county.

My daughter was 13 when she had fixed clarity braces they cost £3000, we paid monthly on a 0% interest loan she only needed them for 14 months and her teeth look amazing now.

We’re in Norfolk

fortyandfrumpy · 13/08/2018 22:22

I'm in NZ and feeling very jealous of those prices!

11k (£5,500) here for 1 child and I have 3 that need them. Interest free and paid off over 3 years.

I should have been an orthodontist Grin

mammmamia · 13/08/2018 23:04

How does it work in the UK for children? how bad do your teeth need to be before you’re eligible on NHS or does it vary by area?

I’ve got braces at the moment privately as an adult - will cost me £5k in total over 2.5 years.

Ginorchoc · 14/08/2018 10:21

This is the index they use to determine eligibility. www.totalorthodontics.co.uk/iotn/

Well second opinion and yes she is definitely eligible, we have a two year wait.

So private it’ll have to be!

Jeez forty! Yes definitely a good career option.

There is a large practice in Mansfield if that helps.
