Just discovered my phone has been tracking my every move for four years!

Has anyone else stumbled across Google's location history/timeline feature? I have no idea how/when I enabled this by mistake but I just stumbled across it and I can literally see almost every train, drive and walk I've taken since 2014, broken down by day and time! It's really interesting and sort of freaky at the same time.

Thought I'd let MN know in case anyone else was in the dark like me and didn't want this info to be collected. If you Google "Google Timeline" you'll find it.

Surprised it's never come up on any of the threads about affairs, but I suppose you wouldn't know about it unless you stumbled across it randomly like I did!

I've also signed out of Google on all devices.

It's quite useful to have on for driving conditions up ahead. For instance we got stuck behind someone doing 35 in a 50zone. There was a huge tailback and after a few minutes Google started recalculation a quicker route and had logged the road as orange. I however have nothing to hide and am quite boring.

Slartybartfast · 13/08/2018 14:03

mine recalculated and sent me via a different route, very handy

DGRossetti · 13/08/2018 14:05

I wonder how many relationships this has ended Hmm

Slartybartfast · 13/08/2018 14:07

why on earth should it end a relationship?
there would be something wrong in your relationship if you felt you needed to look at your partner's location history

Slartybartfast · 13/08/2018 14:09

there would be something wrong in your relationship if you felt you needed to look at your partner's location history - and then question them on it.
I can't wait to show my history to my DH, it says I have been at the pub!

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/08/2018 14:13

I've just looked at mine, it's fascinating but there are inaccuracies.

Just last week, my phone seemed to think it was about 20 miles west of where I actually was, in a place I have visited but not for a couple of years at least.

It seems to track car journeys, places visited and walking distance, but it didn't seem to notice the big hill walk I did a few weeks ago, it just seems to think I spent 5 hours in the pub instead of 1 after spending about 4 hours walking around first Confused.

I'm guessing you're not from round these parts Grin.

cjt110 · 13/08/2018 14:15

I've nothing to hide but just had a look and it made me feel a bit giddy. I don't like that it's tracking me. Deleted my history and turned my locations off!

Confusicated · 13/08/2018 14:16

iPhones do with regardless of if you have a google account or not, but hardly anyone seems to know they do.

Settings, privacy, location services, then right at the bottom you have “system services”, then “significant locations”

Slartybartfast · 13/08/2018 14:17

mumsnet you mean Rossetti?

Sofabitch · 13/08/2018 14:17

Also shows everything ive done on my phone! Every app I've opened. Every item of food I've scanned in my fitness pal. Scary scary

Bluelonerose · 13/08/2018 14:19

It even knows if I've been driving or walking.

Apparently though I live next door Confused

paintedwingsandgiantrings · 13/08/2018 14:21

I just went to see if google history works on my phone, and it's my partner's history coming up!

I do use his phone sometimes for stuff, does this mean I'm logged into Google on it?

If so, that's quite sinister - all someone would need to do to track you would be to log into their google account on your phone.

DGRossetti · 13/08/2018 14:23

mumsnet you mean Rossetti?

Yes Smile ...

paintedwingsandgiantrings · 13/08/2018 14:28

I don't get it. I'm logged in to Google on my phone, my laptop and - it would appear - DP's phone also.

Why's it showing only his history and not mine?

Thanks for that El Reg article, DGRossetti.

It includes a link to a useful recent report from the National Cyber Security Centre:

Used connected cars need disconnecting

Once upon a time you sold your car, handed over the keys, log book, MOT certificate and pocketed the cash or bought a new car and thought no more about it. No longer. In today’s connected world – you may have just sold a computer on wheels.

As of late 2017 there were around 9 million internet-connected cars on UK roads. Most new cars have features that allow the owner to interact with the vehicle, even when nowhere near it. This varies from the ability to set climate control, through to uploading sat nav destination details and more. This information is then stored in the online account associated with the car.

This data is not the only personal information that remains with the car. For instance, phones that have been paired with the car should also be unpaired when the car is sold.

When selling an old phone or device most people would ensure that any personal data on it was completely wiped. The same principle applies when an internet-connected car is sold; it is generally the seller’s responsibility to disable the online account that they used with that car.

Many car manufacturers and dealers state this in their terms and conditions. However, some customers may not read them that closely and fail to delete their personal accounts and access. When the car is then sold on, the previous owner can track and monitor the car’s location and other data without the new owner’s knowledge.

The key message is to treat a modern car like any other connected device that is being sold: delete all personal data and disable the account that has been used with the car. Privacy is already seen as a key issue with phones, tablets, and laptops. Cars and other internet connected devices should also be added to the list.

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/08/2018 14:40

On the cars issue, when I connect my phone to my car to charge it, it always asks whether to allow access to data or just charge and I select 'just charge' so OK.

However, I also listen to podcasts over bluetooth, and have the handsfree phone/text etc so my car probably has my phone data in it. It can mirror the phone screen on the car screen, but I don't use that because it won't play podcasts at the same time, even though it would be brilliant for the sat nav.

But before I got this company car, I hired cars weekly and all those that had phone connectivitiy had dozens of saved phones where previous drivers had connected their phones up.

I wonder how many people driving a hire car are aware that they're leaving some of their personal data with the car when they hand it back?

Ellasshitholekitchenpjpiigp · 13/08/2018 14:43

If it wasn’t for this technology my DtB would probably be serving life in prison for the murder of his partner when he found her in there home. luckily her evil exH was caught using this and cctv even though he was in disguise as a workman. It still makes me feel cold to think how it could have gone. Her ExH made anonymous phone calls to police in the lead up pretending to be concern d neighbour hearing DV! He is serving a 32 year life sentence!

Well I managed to lose a 64Gb memory stick last month in a hire car Grin

Totally my fault.

It only had music on it, and a few iPlayer vids. And maybe a few virtual machines from wayback when ...

Slartybartfast · 13/08/2018 15:09

My phone also has pictures on my timeline

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/08/2018 15:16

Slarty If you want to see something else creepy about the pictures, look online at your google photos. If you have them set up to back up from your phone or tablet, it has done this, but also automatically categorised them into albums by content, location and date.

So in the folder 'things' it has made me albums named Farms, Forests, Dogs, Parks, Bridges, Cats, Beaches, Christmas, Fireworks, Ducks, Boats etc. It's a bit shit though, just about all the photos in the Dogs album are actually cats and there's a photo of some weird little pig like things, that I can't remember anything about.

PolytheneSam · 13/08/2018 15:17

At least google shows you they're tracking you. Every app, every website you view, even if your phone is off your whereabouts are known.

Two options: either make your peace with this state of affairs or don't carry any phone with you. (Although with face recognition cameras all over the place this might not be enough)

marvellousnightforamooncup · 13/08/2018 15:26

l use duckduckgo instead of Google for a browser. They don't keep your search history. It's my small fight back against data capturing. Still use Google Maps though.

Slartybartfast · 13/08/2018 15:36

The photos thing is spooky I checked photos of dogs
