What's the longest you've lived in one house?

We're thinking of moving in a year or so, and it suddenly occurred to me that it will be quite a shock to live in a different house after being in the same one for 17 years.

Previously I'd only lived somewhere for a maximum of 3 years, so didn't get quite so attached.

Got me thinking, and being nosy about other people, and what it's like to move after being in one particular home for so long.

House 1 - 1 year (from birth)
House 2 - 20 years (parents still live there, 48 years)
House 3 - 3 years (or rather, it was a flat - the first home we bought)
House 4 - 16 years
House 5 - 7 years so far

My parents are still in my childhood home. I would say that was my home from 0 to 22 when I graduated from uni as during uni I returned during holidays.

Pissedoffneigh · 14/08/2018 00:50

Age 0-18 one house
Moved around a bit since then.

My kids have lived in seven houses before they were seven (consequence of private rental and marriage breakdown plus work)
Have lived in the last house seven years.

I would move regularly if kids weren't in school tbh.

38 years. Trying to future proof so I can continue to live here.

MrsFezziwig · 14/08/2018 01:02

Lived in my childhood home for 23 years. First adult home about 8 years. Second adult home 29 years. Didn’t miss it at all when I moved, which surprised me. I’m planning for my current one to be my last, but given my age I doubt I’ll be in it for 29 years!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 14/08/2018 01:23

After leaving home, my record is 20 months Blush All legitimate reasons for moves, there's just been a lot of them - about to move into house number 9 Confused

One parent still lives in my childhood home, by way of comparison!

ILoveMyDressingGown · 14/08/2018 01:35

As a child/young adult I lived in the house my mum still lives in from about 7 to about 23 so 16 years (my mum has lived there for 31 years now). I lived in the flat/bedsit from 2003-2006, then my last house from 2006-2012 and our current house from 2012. We have no plans to move.

Katedotness1963 · 14/08/2018 02:00

16 years in the house I grew up in. Now we’re in the middle of our 17th or 18th move.

BrynhildurWhitemane · 14/08/2018 04:52

18 years in childhood home. I saw it up for rent recently and it's been altered somewhat.

Gottokondo · 14/08/2018 04:54

9 years a child, 7 as an adult. We will move house beginning of next year and I hope that I'll leave that one feet first.

MrsJonesAndMe · 14/08/2018 06:39

20 years in childhood home - parents still there!

DamsonGin · 14/08/2018 06:51

11years as a child.

Just counted and I've lived in 14 towns and 18 different houses.

Been in our current house 7 and hoping to stay for a few years more.

Mablethorpe · 14/08/2018 07:27

12 years, rented cottage. Managed to buy after saving all that time and moved into our lovely new-build four weeks ago. This will be our ‘forever’ home. Smile

maggienolia · 14/08/2018 09:13

My mum has just notched up 53 years in her house. She doesn't like moving.

sleepymouse · 14/08/2018 09:17

Longest was my childhood home - lived there for 12 years. Since moving out of home I moved a lot until settling down to have kids. Longest time then was 5 years, have been in current home for 3.5 years and planning on growing old here

vampirethriller · 14/08/2018 09:17

13 years. Since age 18 when I left home and now age 36 I've lived in 23 houses.

SporkInTheToaster · 14/08/2018 09:23

Fairly nomadic, unsettled childhood meant lots of moves. Moved a lot as a young adult, renting on shorthold tenancies. Then bought and sold a few times in quick succession over about 7 years. This is the longest stay we’ve had, been here for about 14 years.

havanesehope · 14/08/2018 09:24

Longest time continuously in one house is 11 years including childhood. Current house 1 year.

WilburIsSomePig · 14/08/2018 09:26

This one - 13 years. Moved around A LOT previously and love that I've found somewhere I love to really settle in.

AnnieRich · 14/08/2018 09:29

30 years and future proofing.

Walkingthedog46 · 14/08/2018 09:32

40 years and counting!

Gingerninj · 14/08/2018 09:33

I lived in the same house still i was 13 then we moved across the country which came as a big shock. For a long time it felt like a holiday and we'd go back eventually. I moved out at 17 and moved around quite a bit, every 6 months or year. Until moving into my current house which I've been in for 6 years now though i plan to move soon. Though I am quite attached to this house after moving around and finally settling

Aragog · 14/08/2018 09:38

My childhood home is where I lived the longest: from around 2y to 18y (and then returning in holidays etc and Not actually fully leaving home til I was 22y) - so 20 years.

My current house, we've lived here for 13 years, and think we will stay here for a long time having made various house improvements to it.

EyeDrops · 14/08/2018 09:44

As an adult, no more than 3 years. I detest moving, I'm sick of it, but they've largely been job-related moves. All being well I expect the next house (moving this week!) to be about 5 years, but we'll see!
