What's the longest you've lived in one house?

We're thinking of moving in a year or so, and it suddenly occurred to me that it will be quite a shock to live in a different house after being in the same one for 17 years.

Previously I'd only lived somewhere for a maximum of 3 years, so didn't get quite so attached.

Got me thinking, and being nosy about other people, and what it's like to move after being in one particular home for so long.

10 years as a child.

I’ve moved house more times than I’ve cleaned an oven in adulthood

ForalltheSaints · 11/08/2018 20:44

14 years as a child. Mum still lives in the same house.

Cakeandmarshmallows · 11/08/2018 20:54

23 years at my parents and they have been there 40 years this year....

MargaretDribble · 11/08/2018 20:58

Last house 32 years. It was a big wrench when we left. This house under 2 years.

PickAChew · 11/08/2018 21:00

14 years in our last one. We only intended to stay a few.

We intend to be carried out of this one in boxes.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 11/08/2018 21:01

14 years in the house I grew up in (moved there when I was 4).

Since I left home for university (over 20 years ago) the longest I have spent in one house is 7 years. That doesn’t seem too bad, except that it was only 1 house and every other home has been 3 years or less.

3 years in it current house and I am desperate for a move - not just from the house but to another country preferably - I like to move!

OhTheRoses · 11/08/2018 21:02

23 yrs. This one for 3.

My mother has been in hers for 41 years; MIL for nearly 60. My gran lived in hers for 80, until she had to go into a nursing home.

CountFosco · 11/08/2018 21:04

We've just moved after 15 years in the same house. TBH we were so ready to move to a larger house and even the five year old hasn't missed the old house at all which surprised me.

butlerswharf · 11/08/2018 21:42

14 years

MsAwesomeDragon · 11/08/2018 21:45

I lived in my childhood home for 21 years. My parents still live there, they've been there 44 years.

Since then, the longest has been 9 years. That's the house I live in now and I have no plans to move at all, I'm staying here until I need a care home.

Elflocks · 13/08/2018 22:38

22 years

Lynne1Cat · 13/08/2018 22:46

I've been in my house for 27 years. We moved here when our sons were aged 9 and 7.

Kim82 · 13/08/2018 22:51

I lived in my childhood home for 18 years, other than that the longest I’ve lived in a house of my own was 6.5 years which was my last house. We moved into this one a year ago, we’ll probably be here for a good few years now, probably between 8-10 years ish.

Pinkvoid · 13/08/2018 23:12

The house I’m in atm is up there, four years. As a child we moved a fair amount. DM was a single mum until I was three and she has told me we moved a lot during those years but I don’t remember. We lived in my favourite house from three-six, next house for four years, next one for two years then the next one she still lives in but I left home at 16. Since leaving home I’ve had six homes, the current one is the longest I’ve stuck in one but I’m moving again in two weeks Grin.

Noqont · 13/08/2018 23:15

13 years in current one
Prior to that I lived in 23 different houses Shock It's nice to stay put.

Helpmemyhairisterrible · 13/08/2018 23:17

The people who had ours before we moved in had been here since 1980. They paid £12000 for itShock. Can't help but wonder if we'll still be here in 40 years. We had the one we just sold for four years and that's been the longest in one place since DH moved into my flat by stealth 10 years ago

MinaPaws · 13/08/2018 23:19

18 years - my childhood home. Been in this one for 13. That's the second longest. Never realised that before.

CluedoAddict · 13/08/2018 23:21

21 years in my childhood home where my parents still live. They have been there 49 years.

20 years in my home with DH.

mycatplotsdeath · 13/08/2018 23:24

Bought my first home at 18 and have lived here for 29 years with no plans on moving

tigercub50 · 13/08/2018 23:30

I’ve moved quite a lot - the longest in one place was my home just before I got married (16 years). Still miss that house & the wonderful sea view. There was even a private beach!

Thecomfortador · 14/08/2018 00:11

11 years as a child. As an adult, 4. Would like my children to have as settled a childhood as I, although that is not guaranteed.

GrumpyCatIsMySpiritAnimal · 14/08/2018 00:14

3 years has been my longest so far.

Petalflowers · 14/08/2018 00:14

11 years continuously

15 yearsif you include time spent at university, and returning home during holidays

Petalflowers · 14/08/2018 00:16

My aunt lives in her mil (my late gps house). It’s been in the family for 60 years (no stately palace, alas, just a three bed semi )

BlooBagoo · 14/08/2018 00:20

I seem to average around 10 years per house, where I am now is the shortest one so far but it's still been 5 years and no plans to move any time soon. Maybe in 5 years then.
