Not been to France for years - what's good in French supermarkets?

Indulge me - I am off to France soon with the DCs and LOVE a foreign supermarket. Am idly planning and looking forward but I need some specifics. Do they still do those peanut flavoured wotsit things? Obvs cheese and wine... what else is good?

Oh oh oh and Dijon mustard in random glasses.

Gallets and pallets - butter biscuits.

Butter and cheese obvs.

Flour for my bread maker - the taste is sooooo much better. They do this multi grain mix that's awesome.

Make at home creme caramel - packet but awesome.

Saucisson - all kinds.

God I bloody love France!!!

twilightcafe · 12/08/2018 13:13

I want to go back to France! I only returned on Saturday!

Anglaise1 · 12/08/2018 13:20

Leclerc is much cheaper than Carrefour or Super U. Super U very much depends on the quality of the patron or patronne.
For apéro, the Belin emmental crackers are delish, for dipping carrots and other raw vegetables Mme Loic dip (various flavours) are great.Butter with sel de Guérande, baguette tradition (from a good boulangerie). Any local fruit and veg. St Malo yogurts or fromage frais. Camembert (anything unpasteurised), hard cheese Comté or Beaufort. If you want a lighter red wine those from the Loire are very good (Saumur or St Nicolas du Bourgueil). Beer - Grimbergen. Filter coffee Carte Noir Expresso.
Rozana sparkling water. Poulain chocolate powder Côte d'Or dark chocolate.
I only miss PG Tips from the UK!

Anglaise1 · 12/08/2018 13:23

And Mère Poulard biscuits.

Standstilling · 12/08/2018 13:36

I prefer to raid their chemists for beauty supplies.

FogCutter · 12/08/2018 13:50

Just come back from France and stocked up on

Maille cornichons (the extra fin ones)
Petite Marseillaise shower stuff
Sancerre rose wine
Cremant (dry fizzy white wine)
Compote (lovely on Greek yoghurt)
Schweppes agrumes (the only fizzy drink I have found that isn't sickly sweet, so refereshing)
Saucisson sec with mixed herbs
And of course lots of cheeses

Justsaynonow · 12/08/2018 13:57

Hmm, can't find my list but off the top of my head:

Tartiflette & conte cheese
soap (magnolia & muguet if I can find)
tea (all the different herbal blends - elephant brand is good, also twinings citron intense, also Hema orange spice)
spices - herbes de provence, bouquet garnis
creme de peche
tinned ratatouille & cassoulet
ricola in boxes
shopping bags
la roche-posay & nuxe lotions/gift packs (go to a cheap pharmacy)
croissants, pain au chocolat, pain aux almondes
If I wasn't limited by weight and customs, I'd bring Lillet Rose & more flavours of Creme.

Mmmm, I'm salivating. Can't wait for my next trip. Food tastes more real there than in North America. I always go through withdrawal when I come home. Will find my list and up date it with suggestions from this thread.

Not surprisingly I paid an overweight fee on my last trip. Air France is exceedingly stringent.

Best wine in the world

Love a Super U and could spend a fortune on stuff to take home!
We buy various flavours of sirop especially grenadine
Berlin crackers- the mini pizzas
Carambar by the ton
Suchard chocolate (especially the dark one)
The chocolate tablet biscuits with people pictures on
Haribo Dragonballs
Madeleines
Spectaloos
Rhubarb jam
Randomly cereal biscuits
Fruit pouches for the kids
Thick vendee brioche loaf
Plenty of wine!
Basically loads of unhealthy stuff to relive our holiday!

AStatelyPleasureDome · 12/08/2018 14:28

By way of consolation, Ocado now sell Picard products.

BagelGoesWalking · 12/08/2018 14:34

As said, Confit de Canard in tins. Keep the fat around the duck for your roast potatoes.
Le Petit Marseillais- everything - esp the body lotion in 400ml pumps.
If you're in the SW, get some Pineau. Lovely aperitif, I prefer the red but the white is nice too.
Le Mottin Charentais - yum.
Cheap set of steak knives!

Meant to add - Le Bonne Maman jam. Try flavours they don't have here like damson and greengage. Also yum.

mypoosmellsofroses · 12/08/2018 14:49

Fish soup in bottles
Tajine Spices
Merguez
Fig Jam

Oh I really want to go shopping in France now!

VeryFoolishFay · 12/08/2018 15:08

Am I the only one that loves Le Petit Olivier products? Particularly the olive oil foaming face wash? Lovely handcream too.

Brilliant tasty tinned lentils - Cassegrain Lentilles Cuisinees aux Oignons et Carottes
Sponge bears with chocolate- LU Oursons Au Chocolat
Normandy cider - Brut
Tinned ready to eat Mackerel Petit Navire Filets de Maquereaux
Lorina lemonade

Too many to mention! Remember that it’s bank holiday on Wednesday 15th.

P3onyPenny · 12/08/2018 16:06

I bought the big rose shower/ bath gel in that brand. The smell was devine and the bottle lasted for ages.

froomeonthebroom · 12/08/2018 16:13

I like chips a l'ancienne moutarde flavour and the mustard mayo they have. Also set vanilla or pistachio yogurts. And huge knobbly tomatoes. And baguettes. And cheese. And wine. Actually, everything!

P3onyPenny · 12/08/2018 16:18

The fresh greengage are lovely too.....

LemonysSnicket · 12/08/2018 16:27

They sell Sirop in Sainsbury's now

enabledlurker · 12/08/2018 16:34

If you like Nuxe and La Roche Posay it is much cheaper in larger branches of Auchan than the Chemist.I only discovered this last week and I have lived in France for 16 years.

NewtScamandersNiffler · 12/08/2018 16:52

@AStately

I had no idea. A very good reason to clear the freezer to make room.

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 12/08/2018 17:11

Cleaning stuff! Anything savon noir, and eau de Javel. They do fab eau de javel pastilles that you can just lob down the bowl for sparkling toilets.

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 12/08/2018 18:00

longlife shopping bags - YY to that! We have some from our last visit, 9 years ago. Just about to head off again (can't wait!). Not self-catering this time, but I'm planning to go to a supermarche to restock on bags anyway. Thanks to this thread, I have a shopping list to fill the bags with.

poorbuthappy · 12/08/2018 18:19

We are going on Thursday in a slightly smaller car than normal so we've decided to not take as much food as normal and buy it there....taking 1 for the team yes yes of course!!! Smile
We love a bimble round Leclerc, it's a tradition now every year
