Would you support a new, centrist political party?

Just that really. I’m feeling ‘politically homeless’ but wonder whether the best thing for the country now would be a centrist party that tries to heal the rifts in society, or at least communicate across them. I think I’ve given up on the idea of being ‘represented’, but I desperately want to stop all the name calling and scapegoating that seems to be going on.

Would be interested to hear others’ thoughts ...?

yy to the gender comments.

Littleoakhorn · 11/08/2018 19:23

No. I’d like decent leadership in the main parties.

VickieCherry · 11/08/2018 19:28

I would prefer Labour to get rid of Corbyn and the Momentum bros and have a decent, sensible, grown up leader.

However, failing that I could probably be convinced by a Centrist, anti-Brexit party, depending on who was involved. I can't help but think there must be some plotting in Labour now?

notheretoargue · 11/08/2018 19:41

Yeah, I thought labour might have done something too! I cringe now when I remember the hopes I had for corbyn Blush I thought he would open up room for debate. BlushBlushBlush

The thing is, when both main parties were quite central back in the 90s/early noughties everyone moaned that there was no choice because all of the parties were too samey.

MaybeDoctor · 11/08/2018 21:00

Wasn’t there some talk of Lord Ashdown setting up a new party? Ironic, I know!

For me, it all turns on the woman question.

ShackUp · 11/08/2018 21:21

Yes, 100%.

I used to be left-wing but am sick of identity politics and Bromentum.

lonelyplanetmum · 11/08/2018 22:05

I'm worried any attempt at a new centrist party now would split the current floating voters -it would grow slowly anyway with the result that UKIP, LibDems and the newcomer would dilute votes and the current shambles would be in for even longer.

I would like a slightly left of centre Labour to get rid of Corbyn and have an honourable mature, honest, highly intelligent states-person like leader. A sort of cross between
Justin Trudeau, Obama, Sir Robert Peel and Clement Attlee heading a compassionate,anti-Brexit party.

I'm not holding my breath.

GloGirl · 11/08/2018 22:20

Yes, I think Cornyn and Momentum have got the Labour party sewn up for the next few years and there isn't time to wait for the next "New Labour" type come back. Austerity is crippling people.

I'd rather let Labour wither in the little fiefdom and get behind a centrist party. I am itching to campaign just need to get behind somebody!

HolyPieter · 11/08/2018 22:24

Only if they don't end up in bed with the trans cult, which is extremely unlikely.

The only current party that isn't is UKIP, which is why they'll be getting my vote by default.

BonnieF · 11/08/2018 22:29

Assuming the new party’s number one policy commitment was to do whatever it takes to stop Brexit by any means possible, or to re-join the EU at the earliest possible opportunity, I would probably join, and would consider getting involved as an activist.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/08/2018 22:30

I reckon we need to get behind the Lib Dem's and shape them into something decent.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/08/2018 22:31

Lib Dem's are the only vaguely viable pro eu party.

HotSauceCommittee · 11/08/2018 22:36

I did support a politically centrist party back in the day; New Labour, and look at how that ended up. I still have a secret Tony Blair appreciation society chat with DH and DBIL where we all say how great he was and lament about his instrumntal with George Bush and the Iraq invasion.

zen1 · 11/08/2018 22:43

I’m waiting for a party that doesn’t sell women down the river. I’ve got a feeling I could be waiting for sometime.

Timeforanewname2014 · 11/08/2018 22:54

Yes yes 110% yes. Agree with many on here that a party who opposed Brexit and was sensible about trans issues would get my vote. I have always passionately believed that, especially as a woman, using my vote is important. But, if there was an election tomorrow I have no idea whatsoever who I could vote for.

bravobravo · 12/08/2018 08:11

To the people who want a pro Eu party, why are you not voting Lib Dems?

lonelyplanetmum · 12/08/2018 08:15

After being a lifelong Labour voter I am now voting LibDem but just sense that others won't.

kaytee87 · 12/08/2018 09:29

@bravobravo I do vote Lib Dem

ARoomSomewhere · 12/08/2018 09:38

I'm putting all my hopes in the Lib Dems. (crosses fingers and prays)

Brexshit (whichever side you were originally on) is a Disaster.

We will end up with PM Boris by this time next year Sad

notheretoargue · 12/08/2018 09:50

To those voting Lib dem - what are your thoughts on farron and cable missing the vote about parliament getting a say on the brexit deal? The govt won by a tiny majority, because the Lib Dems didn’t show up and labour brexiteers voted with the Tories.

I don’t tend to agree with much of the Lib Dem’s policies but would gladly support an anti brexit party, if that’s what I thought they could be.

I’m more optimistic about campign groups like Better Together

bravobravo · 12/08/2018 09:56

As a Remainer, I can see the country is divided on Brexit and the recent poll reflects this - Tory and Labour are literally neck and neck with Labour half a point ahead on the Britain Elects poll tracker.
Yes I feel Corbyn is wishy washy on his Brexit stance however I'm pretty convinced he is against a no deal hard Brexit which is better than the Tory alternative.
With Bannon and all the other hard right nutters sniffing around, a potential Boris led goverment doesn't bear thinking about.
I'd imagine a Centrist party could gain momentum in the long run, but with the prospect of an early election now is definitely not the time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/08/2018 10:38

The Lib Dems let us down by not being there for that vote. But I still think that they need people to get behind them. After all they do have a presence in Parliament. We need to strengthen that.

MotherOfMinions · 12/08/2018 11:35

Lib Dems need to sort themselves out. They're supposed to be our centrist option

noblegiraffe · 12/08/2018 13:02

I was talking to some recent graduates and they still haven’t forgiven the Lib Dems for the student loans failure.
