Got the job but my cv says I have GCSEs that I don't have I'm in a state and need advice

I've just landed my dream job and due to start in a few weeks, I've got the job based on my skills and experience not my few school based qualifications from the 80s. I did the really stupid thing of lying on my cv that I have 3 GCSC's, when i don't. I have had my starter pack saying on my first day of work I need to take my P45, signed contract and copies of any relevant qualifications. What should I do? I tried to obtain a copy of my gcsc grades a few years ago and the exam board said they didn't have reacords for my school that far back. I don't even know what I got grade wise but I know they were rubbish as I had traumatic few teenage years. What should I do? Come clean to my new boss? Or just say I don't have the certificate? I'm having sleepless nights and really cross with myself and would never do anything like this again. What would you do???

DaphneSprucesPippasClack · 22/08/2022 14:35

You don't get the records from the school you get them from the exam board!

I gave up years ago putting my actual grades - I think it’s shit to say you need a-c passes when there were, in maths, different papers. I did middle paper and highest grade was C lowest was E and I got D. (So pissed still after 34 years that I then did higher paper at Xmas and got an A - I’m so bitter) and my school insisted they didn’t do resits for GCSEs back then - wankers

now I put I have 9 GCSEs which I do but I don’t put the grades and never been a problem that I don’t have the certificates anymore
even my Access course hasn’t got certificates anymore all I have is a letter confirming I attended and passed and even that was good enough for me to do my undergraduate degree a few years ago

Wow. I'm astonished at the ease that everyone has accepted, and advised, lying on a c.v. Does everyone really add a "sprinkling" of extras? What happened to integrity, and succeeding through hard work and experience? (Which I accept the OP has done - all credit to him - so I don't see the need to lie).

DaphneSprucesPippasClack · 22/08/2022 14:38

When I went to uni to do social work I had to prove every single qualification.

tara66 · 22/08/2022 14:38

But you probably DID get 3 GCSEs -as that is not a difficult thing to do and from what you say - by asking for the records - you must think you DID pass SOME GCSEs. ' DO NOT confess - you do not need to be a blabber mouth about it! It is your secret! Study and take exams now if you feel you must. Just say record for 1980s GCSE not available.

I never would lie on a cv. I've known too many people who have lost jobs that way.

The OP has no choice. If they own up they will lose the job so they have to ride it out

DaphneSprucesPippasClack · 22/08/2022 14:40

Once again they are. From the exam boards

Ignoring the fact that this thread is from 2018, uni entry requirements are completely different from a job offer, unless the job requires a relevant degree.

It's not comparable at all.

RudsyFarmer · 22/08/2022 14:41

I’d be amazed if that affected your job prospects. I’d have assumed the ‘relevant qualifications’ would be anything that you’ve done towards your career ie the relevant quals to be an accountant.

All bets are off though if it’s education. I am now working at a school and the application was so thorough they wanted proof of every single thing.

bpirockin · 22/08/2022 14:43

I was once told by an employment agency and someone at the DWP to falsify qualifications. I eventually did it and felt dreadful about it. The only time I have ever been asked to produce my certificates was for a job I had been doing successfully as a temp for over 6 months. By that time my pet parrot had destroyed an envelope with all my genuine certificates in it anyway, so I told them that. It didn't matter because they refused to employ anyone who did not have a Degree anyway! It was utterly ridiculous to be honest, but that was that. By the time you've been working for over a decade there are far more important things.

Sorry just read your post again. If there aren't any records then no one can prove you wrong. Did you try all of the relevant exam boards or just one?

I'm not sure the OP is still around after 4 years.
