Got the job but my cv says I have GCSEs that I don't have I'm in a state and need advice

I've just landed my dream job and due to start in a few weeks, I've got the job based on my skills and experience not my few school based qualifications from the 80s. I did the really stupid thing of lying on my cv that I have 3 GCSC's, when i don't. I have had my starter pack saying on my first day of work I need to take my P45, signed contract and copies of any relevant qualifications. What should I do? I tried to obtain a copy of my gcsc grades a few years ago and the exam board said they didn't have reacords for my school that far back. I don't even know what I got grade wise but I know they were rubbish as I had traumatic few teenage years. What should I do? Come clean to my new boss? Or just say I don't have the certificate? I'm having sleepless nights and really cross with myself and would never do anything like this again. What would you do???

Nobody cares what GCSEs you got 30 years ago. I wouldn't class them as "relevant qualifications". I just wouldn't mention it at all.

This. “Copies of all relevant qualifications” is just standard text on a new starter letter. I literally don’t ever think I’ve even brought in copies of my degree, let alone anything further back than that.

StormzyinaTCup · 22/08/2022 13:42

Was just going about to query this as I took GCSEs in the first year they ran and I’m 50. I thought OP had not only lied on his CV about his results but had also knocked a few years of his real ageGrin

Now see it’s a 🧟‍♀️ from 2018 so that explains it.

I don't think any employer is expecting to see GSCE results from the 80's, if they ask, just say you have lost them along the way....

I’m a similar age, GCSEs in 1989, and I’ve never provided copies of certificates. Not sure if I even still have any. Tbh same for A levels and degree.

id just see what they ask for and say they’re lost as it was so long ago.

Aargh, fell for the zombie thread!

yesitssea · 22/08/2022 13:52

They'll never check. I never do when hiring people. I don't have my GCSE certs either.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 22/08/2022 13:54

Does no one look at the dates on threads or notice the massive zombie warnings 😂

GingerGloucester · 22/08/2022 13:58

I don’t think they’ll want to see your GCSE results. My husband had quite poor GCSE results and we’ve always just been very vague on applications saying he has GCSEs but not what grades. Whilst we were job hunting I always worried GCSEs would prevent him from getting a job but they didn’t even want to see the certificates and I imagine this is the same for you. So I wouldn’t worry and I’d just not provide the GCSE certificates and not even mention it. I doubt they’d chase you for them as they aren’t directly related to the role anyway by the sounds of it.
I got a new job last year actually and I never had to show my GCSE or A Level results so I honestly don’t think they’re expecting them.

Sparklingbrook · 22/08/2022 14:10

Bit late for that @Connorlewis this thread is 4 years old.

lovemelongtime · 22/08/2022 14:11

Chill out honestly - I know how you must be feeling - but honestly they will only be looking for certificates relative to your profession. I work in Hr , my team do all the reference and background checks. Dont think in 5 years I have ever seen a GCSE certificate - we just want things like if you say you are a chartered accountant and its relevant to your job in finance , then we will want to see that. Same if you have a CIPD certificate for HR then we want to see that, but definitely not school stuff from way back. Hope that settles your mind. Stop overthinking it - you will be fine

Gemma987 · 22/08/2022 14:19

when they ask for relevant qualifications they usually mean recent ones of qualifications you need specifically for the job. GCSE certificates from 30 odd years ago won’t be required, don’t stress as I am sure they hired you for your experience and your job fit. Enjoy your new job 😊

EthelMcUnready · 22/08/2022 14:22

So pleased everyone is being supportive of you. It is to your credit you feel so guilty.
While normally I would say that honesty is the best policy, I think "coming clean" with your new boss would actually make you look less credible than you obviously are.
I wonder how many people do lie about this sort of thing? Like @GirlInTheDirtyShirt says, it's not lying about a medical qualification.... 🤔

FawnFrenchieMum · 22/08/2022 14:23

The only time I have known GCSEs to be vital when applying for roles have been in schools, they advised that I must apply for a copy of my certificates if I didn't have them.
My current role also asked for a copy of my certificates as part of the onboarding, I explained I had lost them and would apply for them but there was likely an 8 week delay, they replied it was fine and not to worry about it.
I think they are only bothered if exam results were a requirement of the role. I would literally just say, (only if asked) that you don't have them and the board couldn't provide a copy that far back.

princessleah1 · 22/08/2022 14:23

Don't worry about it. Sounds like your anxious about the new job and that's freaking you out.

Notjustabrunette · 22/08/2022 14:24

Do you have any other qualifications since then? Like a certificate from your yts etc? If so that trumps your gcses. I have a degree and apart from needing it to get onto another course no one has ever asked for it. You’ll be fine, it’s probably just a standard letter they’ve sent you. Actually as someone who has in the past recruited members of staff, I would find it odd if someone turned up with really old gcse certificates.

Donkdonkgoo · 10/07/2018 23:45

I don't have any qualifications due to a traumatic childhood from 13 to 16, then I got myself back on track, maybe they weren't GCSEs then 🤔

None of this makes sense. First you say yiu did get GCSEs but don't know the grades, then you say you didn't get any qualifications at all. And if the GCSEs aren't 'relevant', why would you lie about them?

And if you're 45 you would have sat your GCSEs in 1993, not the 1980s.

It's not a white lie, and most people don't fill their CV with fiction as a PP claimed.

However, you are extremely unlikely to get caught, so I would just say you filled it in from memory and don't have the certificates. And take them off your CV so this doesn't happen again - your work experience is far more important at your age.

Klippetyklip · 22/08/2022 14:29

It took cse’s (I think) in 1981. I have no idea what grades or passes I gained. Certifificates are long gone. I Have never been asked to provide proof in all the jobs I’ve applied for in the 40 years I have so far been working. There’s really nothing to worry about.

I can't remember my A level grades, let alone GCSEs

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 22/08/2022 14:31

@Octomore if you were reading that closely you'de noticed that the OP started the thread over 4 years ago so the dates fit just right.

harriettenightingale · 22/08/2022 14:31

The thread is a reanimated zombie from 2018. So no.

Sparklingbrook · 22/08/2022 14:32

I wonder if 4 years on we will get an update? Grin Are you still around @Donkdonkgoo ?

Maray1967 · 22/08/2022 14:32

If you’re 45 you would have done ☑️ GCSEs not O levels. My cousin was in the first year to sit GCSEs and he’s 50.
