Do you think celebs really have 'showmances' purely for PR purposes?

This never occurred to me before...
I had thought that sometimes before a film comes out or something, that to create extra publicity the production company with the agreement of the actors might get a few pap photos of the stars looking vaguely like they were maybe on a date or whatever...

But whole relationships?
Surely thats a bit of a conspiracy thing?

But ive noticed otherwise reasonable friends saying it about Cumberbatch and his wife, Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift. actually Taylor Swift with anyone... and Tom Cruise with anyone, George and Amal Clooney....

And I just dont really buy it? That anyone would or could go to those lengths just for self promotion? Bring that type of attention on themselves?

If you think these relationships are fake can I ask why or if you have any concrete reason to believe that?

Not that in the grand scheme of things it really matters either way... but im just really curious as to why people seem to really believe that this goes on? maybe they know something I dont?

Pretty sure Richard Armitage is gay but it hasn't affected my, or many other womens lust for him lol!!

JaneJeffer · 03/07/2018 13:43

Gorgeous Michael French played the part of womanising David Wicks to perfection. Who wouldn't fancy him?

Also, Neil Patrick Harris as sociopathic womaniser Barney in HIMYM. He was perfect.

EachandEveryone · 03/07/2018 14:28

Wasnt he straight in Gone Girl too? Way after he came out.

IrmaFayLear · 03/07/2018 14:41

I'm not sure it matters that actors are homosexual playing heterosexual parts, but I do think that some fans do like to think that their idol is available . I know he's not an actor, but every time Thierry Henri pops up on tv I tell dh that if the doorbell rang and it was TH I'd get my cardigan and be off. Clearly if he were gay, that fantasy would have to end!

Similarly back in my youth pop stars would have to hide any girlfriends, and pretend they weren't married. In magazine interviews it would always be, "I haven't got time for girls at the moment." I lapped it all up at the time, imagining that they were waiting for me to age ten years, not realising that they probably had a wife and two kids, or indeed were gay.

@Sarahjconnor

Well said. It should be pointed out that Russia gave the Beauty and the Beast remake an age rating of 16 due to a "gay moment" (blink and you'll miss it)
Malaysia outright banned it.

Never mind the rest of the world I think it's incredibly naive of some posters thinking there's no homophobia in the uk!

I can assure you as a bi woman it's very much still an issue! And even more worrying for my gay male friends who, I think, have all been assaulted at least once! Dds close friend from primary school is gay, was waiting at the bus stop the other weekend with her girlfriend and some knob spat at them for holding hands! She was really shaken.

I see on sm posts all the time things like 'I've gone right off X actor/singer/sports person now I know they're gay' that look to genuinely be posted by Brits and certainly it's Brit FB pages and their style of writing/language indicates they're Brits too.

As a whole uk is better than a lot of other countries in being accepting of homosexuality - but when people are on a night out, had a drink etc you'd be shocked.

A friend of mines son came out a few years ago and moved in with his boyfriend. She had friends she'd known since he was BORN obviously distance themselves and behave frankly like twats! One she handed a birthday card her ds had left with mum to give to this friend when friend saw them for their birthday - supposed friend wouldn't touch the card!

I'm telling you they walk among us (though how the fuck they manage to breathe being so stupid I don't know!)

ElinorCadwaller · 03/07/2018 17:43

I've got a massive soft spot for Kirsten Stewart. I take the director story at face value-I can't see any advantage to her there as he was married and that never plays well PR wise. I saw a very young woman, under a huge amount of public scrutiny and probably having a wobble in her relationship, getting into a situation with a much older man in a position of power. I don't see what else he got out of it if it was a PR thing. That said his ex wife married Jimmy Iovine, a music exec who is verrrry wealthy, so maybe she traded up.

KS made a boatload of money doing a big franchise and has carved out a brilliant indie career. She'll never get cast in X-Men and clearly doesn't care. Coming out didn't hurt the kind of career she wanted.

100thousandreasons · 03/07/2018 18:06

To make myself clear, again, I don't think there is no homophobia in the UK or the world. I said in my post 'I'm not saying this doesn't happen, clearly it does'.

I'm saying it fucking saddens me that in 2018 that being gay is remotely relevant to anyone's career. I hope in my children's lifetime it becomes the total non issue that it should be.

SmashedMug · 03/07/2018 18:25

Coming out didn't hurt the kind of career she wanted.

You assume that's the career she wanted and not the career she ended up with. Notice how she didn't come out before the massive money making franchise job opportunity.

Not bashing her at all (because who wouldn't make sure they had a secure set up in life before taking the risk of coming out and because I lurve her) but I think she's just another example of a very common pattern re coming out as a celebrity: make sure you've made your name and banked a bit of cash just in case.

ElinorCadwaller · 03/07/2018 18:36

I don't know Smashed, it does really look like it was that way round-she was young enough to be in flux/not quite have worked out what she was into, got very very famous, started doing more interesting work and then was seen dating women. I agree it might well work out like you say for a lot of people though.

Angelina Jolie is interesting on that score-started off as quite openly bi and very risque and has got straighter and straighter. A male star would never be allowed that trajectory.

SmashedMug · 03/07/2018 18:40

Yeah, that's a fair point on KStew. Like it was more of a natural discovery of who she was rather than an active hiding a secret type situation. I forget how young she was when she did Twilight sometimes!

NeverTalksToStrangers · 03/07/2018 19:22

Taylor swift isn't gay. No way. Possibly bi, but not gay. And to those who say that Karlie kloss is her girlfriend... if there's ANY truth in that, I think they aren't a thing any more. It's been widely reported they are no longer friends.

Same with George Clooney.

I would believe Ronaldo though.

DBoo · 03/07/2018 19:28

Arg and gemma collins = definite showmance.

Think all Kendal Jenners are too. I really don't know why they are going to such lengths with Kendal. The truth would probably be a great money spinner for momager.

Melliegrantfirstlady · 03/07/2018 19:43

Sarahjconnor

So do you think the Geordie girl was on a contract?

They have hardly been seen together throughout their relationship

SPOFS · 03/07/2018 20:59

Angelina Jolie comes from an acting family and has many connections within the industry. Plus, she's stunning.

I'm sure a "normal" actress with few connections couldn't have done that.

EachandEveryone · 04/07/2018 00:58

I wouldnt be surprised if she ended up with a female. We dobt know she got straighter and straighter we only see what they want us to.

ElfrideSwancourt · 04/07/2018 07:54

John Barrowman only didn't get the part of Will in 'Will and Grace' because the producers didn't think they could have an actual gay man acting a gay man...... hopefully this wouldn't happen now but still!
(JB said this in an interview it's definitely true)

I'm pretty sure that Rita Ora works as a beard. She has had so many boyfriends, yet so many work projects too. How does she squeeze it all in?

No that is not true, the producers said they thought he played the part too straight and gave the part to (straight) Eric McCormack

ElfrideSwancourt · 05/07/2018 18:14

That's not what he said in an interview
