Do you think celebs really have 'showmances' purely for PR purposes?

This never occurred to me before...
I had thought that sometimes before a film comes out or something, that to create extra publicity the production company with the agreement of the actors might get a few pap photos of the stars looking vaguely like they were maybe on a date or whatever...

But whole relationships?
Surely thats a bit of a conspiracy thing?

But ive noticed otherwise reasonable friends saying it about Cumberbatch and his wife, Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift. actually Taylor Swift with anyone... and Tom Cruise with anyone, George and Amal Clooney....

And I just dont really buy it? That anyone would or could go to those lengths just for self promotion? Bring that type of attention on themselves?

If you think these relationships are fake can I ask why or if you have any concrete reason to believe that?

Not that in the grand scheme of things it really matters either way... but im just really curious as to why people seem to really believe that this goes on? maybe they know something I dont?

maybe amal wanted somebody who'd give her options to run her own firm, step back a bit but still have total control over the direction of the firm. Also, at 36 or whatever she was maybe the idea of twins sounded appealing. I don't mean to offend anybody who's been through IVF as I know it's a difficult process but if you're cruising towards forty a man who has the funds to throw everything at being parents might be reassuring. Also his goals are to be taken seriously so even though he's an actor, there's nothing about his value set that conflicts with hers!

SoNotaWendy · 30/06/2018 01:25

i don't for a minute believe taylor swift is gay!

sockunicorn · 30/06/2018 01:47

I would think so. I think its just an extended acting job for some of them.

Maybe im just easily bought but if you told me 12 months of pretending to be with someone (so living together in a HUGE house and being seen going out to dinner/concert together two nights a week) would earn me 1million + in magazine deals, interviews and paid pap shots, I would do it in a heartbeat.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/06/2018 01:58

I agree with Super. Some of the women being talked about as beards are famous in their own right and have no reason to take a relationship.

Ihuntmonsters · 30/06/2018 02:01

Amal Clooney is a very successful high profile barrister. I doubt very much that money was the primary factor in her marrying George Cluney. If he needed a beard then I would have thought he'd pick an aspiring actress or someone who would gain more from his fame and likely be easier to control as presumably he'd not be the best husband. Also financially he has a great deal to potentially lose from getting married. I'm also not sure why at this point in his career it would be an issue if he was gay. He's more of a director / producer now and hasn't been a lead in a romantic movie for a long time. People in Hollywood do strange things but the person that has been mentioned here has been married for 20 years to someone incredibly beautiful who could probably have had her pick of many many prospective suitors, so why on earth would she be a beard?

I'm sure some celebrities do still hide but it seems unpleasant and a bit homophobic to make claims about people's love lives on the basis of very little information. Sure those who have suspicious short term flings with other high profile names and clearly benefit from it might well be playing it up for the cameras, but relationships of many years, children etc?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 30/06/2018 07:37

Amal Clooney probably earned hundreds of thousands not millions.
Of course she’s gained financially from her marriage.
Anyway, George wants to head to the White House & needs a serious wife..
The casamigos tequila thing is to fund his whitehouse campaign

letsallhaveanap · 30/06/2018 07:45

I think some photoshoots are set up... but whole relationships? Why would anyone do that in this day and age and how would they get away with it?
I know it did used to go on in the past in Hollywood particularly to hide sexuality, but it was much easier to control image and the press back then... but can anyone really live a lie that deeply now days when its so easy to follow people and take pics... theyd have to be really dedicated and surely thats incredibly draining and depressing for someone to go thru for so little gain and so much risk of looking like an idiot?

I personally think some of these relationships look 'fake' simply because the people in them are a bit weird and living quite weird lives... like I do think some of those Taylor and Hiddleston shots may have been staged to try and manage the press somewhat.. but I think the relationship was real... I just think they are possibly quite strange people leading oddly emotionally sheltered lives due to the nature of their career... which renders their behaviour looking oddly naive... if you think about how many people are constantly around these people.... even genuine things arent going to end up looking very 'natural'... it must all be incredibly pressured and intense

raisedbyguineapigs · 30/06/2018 08:40

If Clooney wanted a beard to help him get to the Whitehouse, I doubt an Iranian British Human Rights lawyer was going to be his first choice! He'd have his pick of young American blonde actresses who would jump at the chance. He had a vasectomy reversal for her. I think they look happy and well suited. Shows that people read different things into press photo's!

Childrenofthesun · 30/06/2018 08:52

There are almost no openly gay Hollywood actors. Given the numbers of actors, it seems unlikely that none of them are gay in reality so stands to reason quite a few of them are closeted. It's hard to believe really that in this day and age it is so hard to have success as an openly gay actor.

EachandEveryone · 30/06/2018 10:49

I never knew he reversed a vasectomy.

He's heading for somekind of political career. They have a perfect setup. They are so sickly sweet together. That speech she gave last week about him made me cringe. However, im no romantic so it might just be me.

JayeAshe · 30/06/2018 11:14

Yes definitely. The PR industry is amoral and relentless IMO.

LizzieSiddal · 30/06/2018 18:34

I know that Clooney used to have contracts with “girlfriends” which usually lasted two years. Whether that was to cover up being gay or because he wanted to keep his “real” girlfriends a secret, who knows. But the romance and marriage with Amal is 100% genuine. He fell head over heels in love and really persued her.

BonnieF · 30/06/2018 18:45

The entire ‘reality’ TV circus is based on showmances.

Wasn’t there a ‘couple’ on Geordie Shore who had a long on/off relationship. On when the cameras were running, off the rest of the time. Charlotte & Gary?

PavlovaPrincess · 30/06/2018 18:50

Some are fauxmances, I'm certain.

I'm sure I can recall someone on here who was in the biz saying that if they got married or had kids it was real though. The fake ones tend to just show up for pap walks and movie premieres. (A certain toothy American A lister being the exception to that though, probably due to his 'religion').

SoNotaWendy · 30/06/2018 18:51

Why would a gay man have a vasectomy?!

PinguDance · 30/06/2018 18:58

I reckon both George and Amal are gay so they are both each other's beards.

I've always thought Taylor Swift is gay too but doesn't actually know it herself yet - I don't know why I think this mind!

HollowTalk · 30/06/2018 18:59

I can imagine George is bisexual, but I can't believe that Amal would marry him out of convenience. Why would she do that? There are plenty of eligible rich straight men around if all she wanted was money - something I think is very unlikely anyway.

Benedict Cumberbatch - are people saying he's gay?

HollowTalk · 30/06/2018 18:59

Amal wouldn't need a beard, ffs. If she was gay it wouldn't bother anyone in the world.

PinguDance · 30/06/2018 19:00

I always thought those pics of Kristen Stewart and they guy she had an 'affair' with seems super staged - always wondered what that was about.

EachandEveryone · 30/06/2018 19:30

I dont know because shes openly bi she like a younger Angelina Jolie

raisedbyguineapigs · 30/06/2018 19:36

I think some people think Benedict Cumberbatch is straight, but a womaniser who is addicted to drugs and is being blackmailed by his wife into marrying her and impregnating her! They write abusive messages to his wife telling her to set him free because he couldn't just go to a film premiere in America and never go home

letsallhaveanap · 30/06/2018 19:42

Really?! Wasnt cumberbatch with the same woman for absolutely ages before being briefly single and seen with a fairly normal amount of women out on dates... and then getting married
And hasnt he worked pretty constantly throughout the years?
How do you jump from that to womaniser on drugs??

I dunno how some grown women manage to go so loops over celebs to the extent they get hurtful and aggressive

I mean who are these people? Do they only exist online because I have never ever heard anyone be that weird about a celebrity in real life

letsallhaveanap · 30/06/2018 19:44

and I admit it did cross my mind that Clooney may be gay back in the day... but why would he continue to hide that for this long? Surely he doesnt still have to bank on his het heartthrob status anymore? Why fake a whole marriage? Doesnt make any sense... must be real

raisedbyguineapigs · 30/06/2018 19:52

letsallhaveanap Its all very strange. Im guessing that because he plays a strange socially awkward character on Sherlock, some lonely, socially awkward women took a shine to him. He then married a perfectly nice looking woman who wasn't them and they created a fantasy. Then other people join in and validate them through the internet whereas in times gone by, they would have kept their fantasies in their head. .

falang · 30/06/2018 20:08

I don't think proper celebs (I mean the Clooneys, TS etc) do but I do think the Z listers (Geordie Shore, Katona, Westbrook etc) do because they are so desperate to keep themselves in the public eye they'll do anything. Pathetic.
