13 year old dd just dropped her iPhone 6 (birthday present - 3 weeks old) because her brother threw a football at her causing her to drop it. Replace or not?

I hesitate because she didn't have a protective cover on it when she dropped it because apparently the case had broken at the side. She tells me this now when she knows it is important to always have a protective case. Why not tell me yesterday when we were in town and I would have purchased another case immediately. So I am thinking she has joint culpability and am tempted to replace with very basic iPhone.....

But, but, but - it was a birthday present, her brother threw a football at her and she is in floods of tears.....

Ds uses his iTouch to make stop start motion movies, face time his grandparents in the Middle East, take photos for the "comics" he creates and who knows what else. Me? I what's app, FB and MN on my phone.

Am I the only person who uses their phone to call and text people?

I rarely call anyone on my phone - usually text, Skype, what's app and fb messenger.

Didn't say I was a better parent than you. Nothing to do with money at all. I wouldn't buy a crappy iphone for myself, let alone give one to my child.

How they are worth a grand (In $ in Oz) is way beyond me, dh has one for work (work bought it & he doesn't get a choice, and it is a crap piece of tat masquerading as technology!

I heard the otter case is excellent protection, ds bought dh one for early Fathers Day present. They are much cheaper on amazon. It was an accident, but I would ground her from using it for 2 weeks for not having a case on it.

I am guessing those shocked at 13 year olds having iPhone 6s don't actually have a teenager. My ds 13 has an iPhone 6 and most of his friends have either 6s or 5cs. I would repair and insure. Also insist she buys a new case and ALWAYS has it on

Like Darkheart. most DC of DS's age (12) locally have iPhone 5Cs and are starting to upgrade to 6s. They still meet up, do activities, read, go to the cinema etc. They aren't zombies glued to the screen. This is the modern world. Tech is second nature to them and part of everyday life. They group chat and things (beyond my understanding!) to arrange outings and discuss homework. I had to call friends from a rented BT phone in a cold hallway with my dad counting every minute because it was so expensive. Was that any better?

Differentname your DH is lucky. My poor DH has a Blackberry that none of us know how to answer, because it is so unintuitive! It is tough however; it has to be with the number of times it is flung about in disgust!

FWIW I've bounced my 5S many times (in ordinary case) and it's always been fine. Not fragile tat at all. I love it. It's so intuitive that even if I need to do something technical I can usually work it out. I think OP has already sorted out her problem but my (admittedly techie) DS was able to remove and replace his own cracked screen! Point being, it can probably be done cheaply and successfully at a local repair place for £50 or so.
