13 year old dd just dropped her iPhone 6 (birthday present - 3 weeks old) because her brother threw a football at her causing her to drop it. Replace or not?

I hesitate because she didn't have a protective cover on it when she dropped it because apparently the case had broken at the side. She tells me this now when she knows it is important to always have a protective case. Why not tell me yesterday when we were in town and I would have purchased another case immediately. So I am thinking she has joint culpability and am tempted to replace with very basic iPhone.....

But, but, but - it was a birthday present, her brother threw a football at her and she is in floods of tears.....

Football thrown inside or did it happen outside?

hmc · 07/06/2015 20:47

Brother's punishment - total ban on video games for two weeks (this is pretty major for him)

I am in my forties. I am a higher rate tax payer and have been for about 15 years. I have worked nearly all my adult life. I cannot justify buying an iPhone 6. In fact any iPhone. If I did buy one, I would absolutely 100% ensure I looked afte it and used a protective cover. I do not think you are helping her by replacing it. Sorry.

IsItStupid · 07/06/2015 20:48

It wasn't her fault. Yes, it should have a protective case but if the case had broken it's not always easy to remember when you're at the shops, and it sounds like the case was a bit crap anyway.

Was your DS playing football where he should not have been playing it or deliberately aim at your DD when she wasn't playing? If so, he carries part of the blame.

Can you get it fixed? If not, do you have any insurance on it? I would use it to replace the phone with a strict lecture on how next time she will have to and the importance of a case.

But don't punish her because someone else threw something at her.

hmc · 07/06/2015 20:48

It happened outside Pippi

sorry, you lost me at this bit. A BASIC iPhone? surely 13 year olds are not wondering around with any type of iPhone at all?

RobotHamster · 07/06/2015 20:48

There will be an excess on the insurance, is there a way she'd be able to pay that by losing pocket money or something?

wheresthebeach · 07/06/2015 20:49

Shock Iphone 6? You know you're making her a target to get mugged carrying that around?

Get her a cheaper phone.

But...not her fault it broke I think.

AnyoneForTennis · 07/06/2015 20:50

Unlimited internet as well no doubt

hmc · 07/06/2015 20:50

I take it you don't have a 13 year old totallybewildered - many of them do

IsItStupid · 07/06/2015 20:50

Oh I see you have already replied and will replace it.

I wouldn't make the punishment too harsh really, unless she was standing on a football pitch or in the backyard when it happened. If she was inside then she couldn't reasonably expect something to be thrown at her.

ethelb · 07/06/2015 20:51

What's happened? Smashed screen is about £80 repair for an iPhone 6. Is it completely broken? Warrenty is for 1 year with an iPhone.

Rainicorn · 07/06/2015 20:52

Love all the pearl clenching about a 13 year old with an iPhone.

Op, if there is an excess with the cover, make her pay at least half of it and make her pay for new case herself.

gamerchick · 07/06/2015 20:53

Why wasn't it in a case? I'm stuck using an iPhone and have the chunky, ugly protective cover on it which protect it being thrown at a wall.

Because iPhones are pathetic and if you give one to a teenager without a bells and whistles case then they usually end up broken.

See if Apple will fix it as its so new as anything else might screw the warranty.

hmc · 07/06/2015 20:54

Yes agreed, that's what we will do. She'll pay the excess

CultureSucksDownWords · 07/06/2015 20:54

It's not pearl clutching to disagree with a child being given such an expensive item. It's a personal choice which is just as valid as agreeing with it. Also just because many other 13 yr olds apparently have iPhones or similar doesn't mean that it is required or recommended.

hmc · 07/06/2015 20:55

Screen not smashed and no visible external damage. But phone not switching on - rather dead

Yeah yeah yeah a 13 yr old with an iPhone 6. Well it is 2015 people and I have 6 year anniversary lads in my class with iphones (they bring them on school trips).

I'd repair, buy a better cover and make sure it's the last time you pay for the repair. Next time, she pays.

I do think a 6 is slightly ott though. Not that my opinion matters Smile

Anniversary lads? Fucking iPad has a mind of its own...! I think I meant children in my class Smile

Sparklingbrook · 07/06/2015 20:58

DS2 (13) would be getting a PAYG brick for a while.

CoperCabana · 07/06/2015 20:59

I don't think its pearl clenching to be shocked at a 13 year old casually carrying around something that costs £700 or something.

CultureSucksDownWords · 07/06/2015 20:59

Have you tried a hard reset and/or connecting it up to the computer with its iTunes account?

ethelb · 07/06/2015 21:00

I would take to apple store for diagnosis (white lie and say you don't know how it happened) to find out potential cost. As I said, iPhone is under warranty for 1 year (except accidental damage).
I smashed my iPhone 5s screen by dropping it, from not a particuarly high hight I hasten to add, so am on top of the warrenty deets!
Is accidental damage covered by house/contents insurance?

alwaysabattle · 07/06/2015 21:00

my 7 year old has a iphone so i dont think theres anything wrong with a 13 year old having one. i would repair it op she didnt really do anything wrong even eith a case on it could of still broke. think the upset and worry will off been punishment for her and def get her doing some chores as punishment
