Well I'm finally a true MNetter. I have a parking thread.

Well I literally passed my test days ago. so here's the thing. my house has off road parking at the back of the property there's supposed to be room for 4 cars but barely. and everyone's used to parking in three spaces as ice never needed it before.

now I parked in my space today much to the annoyance of a neighbour who is adamant it's her space. but it's not. everyone just needs to shove over as I now need to park there and it's my allocated space on the deeds of the house.

There is visitor parking the other side but that side is not as good a position security wise as the green means it's higher risk for foot balls hitting it and impulse vandalism etc.

so do I piss of the neighbour and claim.my space or take my chances

Actually for starting a good parking thread within days of passing your test, have some Flowers Grin

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/05/2015 18:02

Ok I've just done been really sad and measured the width of the area. We are talking a space that's roughly 9.24 meters wide leaving each car a space of 2.31m

that crazy right? Or do able?

www.planningni.gov.uk/downloads/parking-standards.pdf

This site says 2.4m so I reckon you are just about ok.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 16/05/2015 18:06

Now I want to go and measure my space to see how big it is, but I'm sat with a g and t and really can't face moving (parking is underground and I'd have to locate he key in the depths of my handbag!) maybe DPS will do it!

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/05/2015 18:06

TheOne many thanks Grin

I know because the landlord has emailed me a photo of the "plot" with my house and space marked out. ( you cab also Match up the others from this too)

I've just googled the width of a Ford Focus (picked that as it's an average sized car in the scale of things). It is 1.8 metres wide. So your gap should fit four cars in.

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/05/2015 18:14

If I slice my arse off I might even be able to get out the door after Grin

OP posts:
piggychops · 16/05/2015 18:14

It's doable but you'll only have about 50cm between cars to get doors open

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/05/2015 18:20

That's what I was worried about piggy I want my space as it's a better position and sooner or later someone else is's gonna move in when we move out and there's going to be a stand off. I dint have a huge car. hers is wider not a 4x4 but a flashy car that's wider than the other cars that park there.

I don't want to be petty and squeezing my car in would feel like proving a point but as a new driver insuring it is going to be expensive enough without having to claim because my car was damaged by someone playing on the green or falling against it drunk in the way back home from the pub.

handfulofcottonbuds · 16/05/2015 18:25

Congratulations on passing your test Smile

Welcome to the petty but infuriating world of parking politics! Stick to your guns on this one and if you have a sunroof, that might be easier to climb out of when she parks her big car too close rather than slice a bit of bottom off Wink

Can you get council workers to measure and mark out?

OP posts:
thelastflame · 16/05/2015 18:56

"much to the annoyance of my neighbour who is adamant" what has the neighbour actually said?

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/05/2015 19:04

She said I'd seen her car there every day and that it was her space and we would have to get the landlords to speak to eachother. I was unfair fir parking there apparently.

but she doesn't realise there's meant to be 4. She said there's only three. She didn't shout or anything she seems reasonable enough I just want to go about this in a nice way as technically we are both right and I've no beef with her there's no need for a show down.

OP posts:
exWifebeginsat40 · 16/05/2015 19:12

but...but she isn't right. you are.

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/05/2015 19:13

I meant she's right about her space being there. She just doesn't realise there's another space. so her space is there just smaller than she thinks

FeatureMop · 16/05/2015 19:24

I have a vague idea that if people have got used to using land and you don't stop them or remind them that they're doing so only with your permission and temporarily then they have a claim over that land.

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/05/2015 19:26

Oh god

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 16/05/2015 19:31

That's over 20 years or something though

Don't worry, OP Smile

auntpetunia · 16/05/2015 19:31

How about photocopy of deed to all neighbours pointing out your space and saying as you've passed your test you will be utilising your space and could they all park considerately, you'd hate to damage their lovely cars with your newly learnt parking skills! !Grin

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/05/2015 19:34

Ah yes, that sounds familiar. It was something we were warned against when our neighbours wanted to plant something in a patch that's on our plot but right by their front door.

I think a friendly note sounds ideal. You could offer to paint lines if people think it would help.

Gileswithachainsaw · 17/05/2015 09:02

I just told dp(he was out all day yesterday ) about how my lack of car has sparked a "unwritten code of conduct" amongst the other neighbours and how they park and how no one ever asked me if that's was ok to use my space.

He called me Sheldon. ....Blush

looking at the plans more clearly it seems half the people in the street are using the wrong spaces

OP posts:
MehsMum · 17/05/2015 09:14

Welcome to the driving world, Giles!
People get amazingly arsey about parking. Here it sounds as if your small car is not the problem. Maybe ask the neighbour over for a cup of tea to look at the plans with you?

DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 17/05/2015 09:20

Called you Sheldon because you want to park in your own flaming parking space!?! that would really annoy me, you're being an arsehole with no thought for other peoples feelings (which Sheldon is - whether its his fault or not) because you want use your own parking space??

Park your car and either post a note through to peoples houses or on their cars to show the deeds and that you will be using your space from now on

Do you have P plates?
