'Normal' things that you find really creepy

When I look out of my window at the flat opposite I can see straight through their living room to a window which lets light in from their garden. When it's sunset I find this image really unsettling and eery.

I also get really creeped out by those pin and string pictures that were popular in the 70's:

What odd things spook you?

I have a thing about those huge, low in the sky, yellow moons you get on occasion (are they called harvest moons? Not sure) I can't look at them. They give me the heebie jeebies .

Also I looked through a very strong telescope once and saw Jupiter all big and its moons. I had to stop because it scared me! Good to see some other space phobics out there!

However, I love astronomy and star gazing! Just as long as the stars are tiny and not magnified.

s113 · 25/10/2014 23:56

I used to be a real laugh at parties, because...

Balloons - I'm always scared they might bang. If children are batting them around then I panic and have to leave the room. I'm nervous about champagne bottles being opened too.

I remember being really freaked out by the game of pin the tail, when I was 7. I was near the back of the queue; I had never been blindfolded before, and I remember the mounting fear as each blindfolded child was asked "can you see"? and they were all saying no. When it was my turn, and the mum in charge advanced towards me with the scarf, I almost ran out of the room! I was persuaded to have my go though; but I remember thinking how pointless the game was. At least a game like Statues has some skill!

When I saw a group of kids playing the game recently; I was glad I wasn't taking part, and I found it somewhat freaky that they all seemed eager to have their go, and their huge grins as they were spun round!

Ir1na · 26/10/2014 02:08

Escalators - I used to have very long hair and was sure it'd get mangled into the workings if I tripped over.

When the wifi and my mobile network are down at the same time - apparently communications would stop if there was a nuclear war or other major disaster.

Moaning, screaming or vomiting noises at night that usually turn out to be animals or my brother's TV.

Being out at 4 or 5 in the morning when there's no-one else around, especially if it's half light and the sky looks weird. It's either grey/blue and cold like I imagine nuclear winter, or bright orange that reminds me of the burning Gallifrey scenes in Doctor Who. Sad

pinkmagic1 · 26/10/2014 06:33

Lone trees in winter, especially at night. They look like they are going to reach out and grab you with their branches! Also as others have already mentioned I also dislike the hulls of ships, canal locks and swimming pool drains, especially dark coloured ones. If I am at a pool I have not been to before, I have to walk round and check the location of the drains before I get in!

smilerc · 26/10/2014 07:07

I have actually seen mine a couple of times on here already which makes me feel much less weird.
It's the hull of big ships when they are in dry dock. I've never heard of anyone else who finds it creepy. My mum thinks I'm crazy but the thought of them makes me shudder.

I also don't like huge wind turbines. I know we need them but the noise they make is so creepy. They are everywhere in the area of France my mum lives. Right next to the roads, you can't get away from them!

smilerc · 26/10/2014 07:18

I've remember another one I haven't sermon here yet. Those big gas storage things. When they are full I can't look at them and when they are empty they are just as creepy. There are far too many in the town I grew up.

smilerc · 26/10/2014 07:19

*seen on here not sermon! Smile

awfulomission · 26/10/2014 09:59

Oh, derelict hospitals. Used to live opposite one. The stuff of nightmares.

Arabica · 26/10/2014 10:25

S113, I had to post and say I know exactly what you mean! Balloons/champagne corks/fireworks (when I can see them being lit and know they'll go bang soon...).

MrWallet · 26/10/2014 11:09

Old fashioned itchy blankets give me the creeps
The heavy dark material used to make nuns' habits, burkas etc (sorry for any offense!)
Beards (the guy with the big beard on GBBO made me feel quite ill
Any trypophobic images, holes, tubes, scales, pods, wasps nests, flying ants, crazed cracked earth etc
Slugs slithering along
Dog poo on paths
People scraping a pot to get the last scraps out make me want to scream
Any kind of insect eggs/maggots!
Going into a toilet and finding a poo in there from a previous person, which wont flush away, thereby trapping you in there for fear people will think you are disgusting to leave it there. Having to flush over and over and praying it will go down.

Dancergirl · 26/10/2014 14:04

Just thought of another one. At our local Tesco/petrol station, they have by the tills a plastic pot with wet tissue in it for separating the bags. It looks disgusting, I have to look away.

PrincessAnnaOfArundale · 26/10/2014 14:16

Best thread I've read in ages! You lot are all completely mental. I have read the entire thread and found myself laughing hysterically and nodding in agreement with so many ('gravity....what it just....stops!' This is one of my favourite ever things I have read on here.)

Mine are all rather mundane by comparison to some of you weirdos but I will add the International Space Station to the list. Oh my God it freaks me out. I had no idea you could see it from earth until DH showed me this site where you can track it's whereabouts and on a clear night you can see it. We went outside one night last year and watched it slowly ambling across the sky and I felt so uneasy and sick. It completely unsettled me and I have no idea why.

Another is drones, you know those unmanned aeroplanes you see with the bulbous heads that fly over. Arrrgh! I've only ever seen 2 in my life but I shit myself at just the thought of them! Those and blimps (enormous airship things). Not sure what they're even called because I am too scared to google them but they are terrifying!

PrincessAnnaOfArundale · 26/10/2014 14:19

...DH has just informed me they are called 'Zepplins'. Urrrgh, just the word is scaring me!

Etihad · 26/10/2014 14:45

s113 you mentioning parties reminded me of something I still avoid to this day: jelly and ice-cream. Jelly is nice, ice-cream is lovely - but together, when one starts to melt and other one doesn't they are evil.

CrackingTheWhip · 26/10/2014 17:29

I hate washing up someone else's cereal bowl. The idea of potentially touching the soggy bits left behind has freaked me out since I was a kid!

Also agreeing with eyes, I'm a glasses wearer for life, thanks.

WhoeverYouWantMeToBe · 26/10/2014 17:44

Multi storey car parks. Even more creepy late at night if you've seen a late showing of a film and your car is all alone. Gemma outta there!

alltoomuchrightnow · 26/10/2014 17:52

my mother is like that about multi storey car parks at any time of day, Whoever. She just refuses to park in them. They are completely depressing though. She will walk miles in the rain rather than use one
I've posted on this before but the building where I have a storage unit is grim beyond belief, and creepy. Strip lights that are energy saving and go on only when you walk under them... (yes I know. good idea in theory, but my unit has NO lights! I have to stand outside it and jump up and down to get corridor light to come on! and still can't see properly inside my unit!) There is no natural daylight whatsoever and it's very echoey. Worse than being in building entirely alone, is to hear one set of echoey footsteps on the stairs and not know who it is.. I try to avoid going at night (not that it makes any difference re the lighting) but have to go sometimes and am due to go this week... And as for the unisex shitsplattered toilets.. I pay good money to use this place!
and had verbal abuse outside from a fellow unit renter because I wouldnt give him my passcode!

Brummiegirl15 · 26/10/2014 19:18

Hah I have a few weird ones too

Hair in the shower / plug hole. Freaks me right out, makes me want to be violently sick. In my 1st year of uni I was in a hall of residence with shared bathrooms and there were lots of international students with very long dark hair. Using those showers made me want to cry. I wore flip flops every day in shower. I will now not use sinks anywhere if there is a long dark hair in it,

I can't stand too close to platform as terrified someone will knock into me and I'll fall into path of train.

A sad one, but freaks me out nonetheless. I had an mc at work this year and I cannot bring myself to use that cubicle. I would rather wait than use that one, no way

EvilTiggyD · 26/10/2014 19:24

Vernon Kaye

rockpink · 26/10/2014 20:08

Outdoors, Pylons, wind turbines, really big machines.

Indoors, too much piled up stuff in my way makes me uneasy. There's two "trugs" with coloured and white washing beside the downstairs loo. If they are piled too high I can't enter the room.
I can't get a book from the bookcase if there's something in the way.

I can't put a teaspoon in my mouth.

awfulomission · 26/10/2014 20:38

Vernon Kaye

Yes! He looks like a ventriloquist's dummy that has come alive. His teeth are particularly odd.

MrsDumbledore · 26/10/2014 20:42

People touching my neck.
Shower curtains being closed when no one is in the shower.
People walking close behind me going up stairs
Having to walk over metal grids / drains etc

CustardOmlet · 26/10/2014 21:06

People touching or poking their cuticles.
Things touching my wrists or scars (both make my skin crawl)
Hair in clumps (I start to imagine it in food and heave)

EmmaJan2015 · 26/10/2014 21:33

Nigel Slater. I like his writing but I cant bear to watch him on tv. Very creepy.

Bambambini · 26/10/2014 21:35

Pylons
