'Normal' things that you find really creepy

When I look out of my window at the flat opposite I can see straight through their living room to a window which lets light in from their garden. When it's sunset I find this image really unsettling and eery.

I also get really creeped out by those pin and string pictures that were popular in the 70's:

What odd things spook you?

CherryBombThe kinds of churches that tend to freak me out are those big Victorian gothic revival things. Hideous. I agree that European churches tend to be much prettier.

I also find cooling towers really freaky. I remember when I went to Ironbridge and we had to drive right past the power station with its huge cooling towers shudder

Coumarin · 24/10/2014 13:58

The oil refinery thing in Stanlow (? near Elsmere Port). Whenever we've passed it, it's been at night so it's all lit up and it looks like a set from a dystopian Sci-Fi film. It's horrible and makes my insides feel weird.

Yy to Polar Express. Horrific. Same goes for that galaxy chocolate ad with poor zombified Audrey Hepburn.

WowserBooooooooooooser · 24/10/2014 14:20

Oh yes, Coumarin ! I know the one you mean. I quite like it as a sight though.

I used to have it about cooling towers until an ex who worked at one said he made clouds. That made them cuter.

monostar · 24/10/2014 15:28

false nails...

Gluetap · 24/10/2014 15:59

Wet tissues, especially if you get some stuck to your hand. Dreading when DS wants to start making papier-mâché things.

The wooden horse that accompanies Morris dancers freaks me out. In fact, anyone dressed in animal costumes!

Brams · 24/10/2014 17:11

Heights. Worked on 23rd floor of Millbank Tower years ago. No problem, very fast lifts, but fire drill we had to go down the stairs and I looked between the banisters and had a panic attack and had to be carried. Deep shame. Just think I might jump 'come to me, come to me'. Dream about it sometimes & can never get back to sleep after. Blush

Brams · 24/10/2014 17:22

Oh lord, more of them. People sucking oranges I really want to hit them. Obv can't so have to walk away. disgustingly creepy.

Also I'm terrified of driving on elevated sections of motorways or bridges. I've done the Second Severn Crossing once and the suspension hawsers all started to close in over my head and there's nothing you can do, there ain't no stopping on the bridge. Spent my visit to London terrified of coming back that way, ended up detouring via Gloucester to avoid it. The old bridge on the M48 is almost as bad. I just think I'm going to drive off the side of the elevated bits. My brother was as bad, he used to swap with his wife and she'd drive the bridges, high parts. No problem as a passenger though.

I love Stephen King but he's given me a real fear of uncovered feet out of bed. The hand might come out from under the bed and pull you under by your foot and ......Shock

mrsduff · 24/10/2014 17:34

The smell of 'hair', mine or anyone else's; that slightly musty, scalpy smell you get if you haven't washed your hair that morning.

I got a waft of someone's hair smell in the swimming pool the other day and my stomach turned.

werewolfinladderedtights · 24/10/2014 17:35

dolls and clowns

HamishBamish · 24/10/2014 18:10

Swimming in a swimming pool in the dark. Years ago I was on a music course and stayed in a boarding school. We swam in their pool but couldn't find the lights. You could just about see where you were going, but the water was pitch black. Scared the pants off me.

Armck79 · 24/10/2014 18:22

Clowns!!
Swans/ sea gulls
Finger nails rubbing against denim sets my teeth on edge.
Empty corridors in hotels

Armck79 · 24/10/2014 18:25

Omg! Forgot about those horrendous porcelain dolls that eye seem to follow you around the room. Btw I'm a Stephen king fan too

Ultracrepidarian · 24/10/2014 18:32

Yes to empty corridors in hotels.
70s wallpaper and carpets.
Seeing things in things that aren't there like when you look at a wooden floor or 70s wallpaper and can see a face or strange horse thing. In our downstairs bathroom we have some gloss that looks like a creepy Rolf Harris kangaroo cross.
Dead insects, flies in particular.
Half open doors.
Teeth, wobbly and when you have to touch them, I hate the tooth fairy.
Sand yak, feels creepy.
Snow flying towards you, especially when driving.
Noises you can't identify.
Mirrors I keep thinking there'll be something else in there other than me.

I'm not a scarfey cat but I do get the freaks at many stupid little things.

Oh god, mould I forgot mould it give me being eaten alive nightmares. That's it I think. Hmm

skyninja · 24/10/2014 19:22

So many of these, it's nice to know I'm not alone

Looking out a window when it's dark
Looking in to mirrors in the dark
Ankle grabbers under the bed
Artificial bodies of water - canals, reservoirs, flooded valleys. And dams, especially hydroelectric. We were once pedaloing in France on a river and we came round a corner and there was a hydroelectric dam. I've never pedalled so fast in my life to get away from it in case it sucked us in.
My face or head being touched, hairdresser doesn't bother me however, so completely irrational
I can't look at aeroplanes flying for more than a few seconds in case they explode. Not because I have believe I have destructive powers, but just because what the hell would I do if it did explode?
hamish Water in the dark too, underground pipes etc and being in the bath in the dark (we once had a power cut and I was in the bath and it sends me in to immediate and irrational panic)
Clowns
In horror films, on the rare occasion I watch them and I do know it's supposed to be freaky, what REALLY scares me is other people's voices coming out of someone's mouth and when people's eyes change colour/go completely black.
And the thing that currently really induces the heebie jeebies - Russell Brand

Flingmoo · 24/10/2014 19:24

This Fisher Price "smart" bear that our colleagues gave us as a new baby present. My baby loves it but I find its face and propensity to randomly start talking creepy...

'Normal' things that you find really creepy
Quenna · 24/10/2014 19:33

watching people walk downstairs. I think I will make them fall all the way down by watching. really can't bear those big staircases slebs have to walk down on chat shows when they are brought on.

LocalVelvet · 24/10/2014 19:35

Mini Countryman. The car that is, not a small farmer.

It's like with rabbits or mice: a small one is cute, but a giant one is downright sinister.

ModreB · 24/10/2014 19:49

I will totally out myself for this. But.

Curtain shops. I cannot walk into a curtain shop. If I know one is there, I have to walk on the other side of the road to get past it. If I am surprised by one, I panic and have to run away. I can't even look at the curtain pages in the Argos catalogue without getting goosebumps.

I do own curtains, but am unable to go and buy them myself. They are Ok in my house, but loads of them in a shop, with the vision of all the people looking at me. No. No, never.

DH thinks it's hilarious, but I have goosebumps even thinking about it.

Hairylegs47 · 24/10/2014 20:10

JCBs, diggers and cranes. I'm convinced they'll come to life and chase me if I go past one.

Shower curtains or shower doors, if I'm in the shower, they must be open. I don't care how wet the rest of the bathroom gets, the opening STAYS OPEN!!

VileStatistyx · 24/10/2014 20:12

Hugs and kisses.

I do not want random people I am just being introduced to to lean in and slobber on my cheek. It gives me the shudders. I find invasion of my personal space really really creepy.

I know it is unreasonable. Grin

Livpie · 24/10/2014 20:17

Pipes
Boiler rooms
Power stations
Water towers
Disused buildings and swimming pools where no one would hear you scream
Urban decay
Places covered with brick shaped Victorian style tiles eg some London Underground stations
Old fashioned public toilets
Concrete stairways in multi-storey car parks

AmazonGrace · 24/10/2014 20:21

I don't like being in a room at night with the curtains or blinds open.

Many moons ago when I babysat for my brother he had no curtains up, they hadn't long moved in and the livingroom overlooked the back garden so they weren't in a rush to put any up. I had to sit in their livingroom, trying not to imagine that a gruesome face would suddenly appear at the window. What made it worse was they had a baby monitor in the livingroom, so I'd also got the eerie sounds of staticky breathing too.

I was most relieved when they returned!

skyninja · 24/10/2014 20:56

Ditto to watching people walking downstairs Quenna, all three DCs have fallen down the stairs when I was at the top of the stairs with them and now I feel myself get all tight chested when I watch anyone walk downstairs. I often shout 'Watch out. Careful' etc to my children, which has the effect of making them stop and turn to look at me, thus increasing the risk of them falling...

And LocalVelvet - Donnie Darko. For a start, it's indecipherable, and secondly, that scary-arse rabbit.
