Lincoln, Notts surrounding villages...help !!!

Hi, my partner and I need to rent within a commutable distance of Lincoln. We would like to move to a village/town with good amenities ie nice shops and a few nice pubs or restaurants. It needs to be within 50mins - at present we have identified Southwell but would love to hear of any other options - Stamford would be my choice but it is just that too far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Claire

I'd move to uphill Lincoln in a flash, but DH is not from the 'shire & wants out! So when we move it will be a complete relocation.. maybe we'll try Leamington Spa Wink

I love Cafe Zoot! Preferably following a cocktail (or two) at the White Hart. I think The Bronze Pig might be the kind of gastropub type of place you seek but have never eaten there myself. Yet.

wow thanks vivalebeaver that is so thoughtful of you, I shall take a look now xx

Sorry, that was the dodgy link one.

Queens way is lovely but gets very busy at rush hour with queues to turn out (my colleague lives down there)

clairehills · 06/04/2014 20:33

herladyship, i would thoroughly recommend Leamington, warwick, kenilworth or stratford upon avon. My heart is breaking that we are having to relocate as I love it here and we spend a lot of time in the Cotswolds - maybe you could buy our house when we sell, ha ha :-) .I guess a change is as good as a rest

Sorry I disappeared - small boy needing his bedtime story! Yes to Nettleham Road. In terms of uphill Lincoln, the closer to the Cathedral, Bailgate, Newport Arch type area the better for proximity to nice shops etc. And yes, Burton Road is just a main road - but a nice one.
In terms of crime, stabbings etc Lincoln is a very quiet place! I've lived in Lincoln, Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester, Leicester, Derby - and Lincoln is way the quietest of the lot. Yes there is crime - there's crime everywhere - but really not on any major scale at all.

GreatSoprendo · 06/04/2014 20:36

Ooh St Giles Avenue! Very nice and DEFINITELY not to be confused with St Giles estate. You won't go far wrong with most of the properties on Beavers list.

GreatSoprendo · 06/04/2014 20:38

I'd say the Egerton Road one is good too - very nice street and good location.

thenightsky · 06/04/2014 20:38

Queensway is one long traffic jam between 8 and 9am. I know coz I sit there. I know every house and its curtains and front garden plants and what day the cleaner comes to each house on that road.

clairehills · 06/04/2014 20:41

greatsoprendo no worries, i am touched by everyones help and generosity with their time on a sunday evening. Right I will definitely have to make a note of all these nice roads but am understanding that areas around cathedral/castle, bailgate are lovely. Am going to look up st giles avenue and queens way

Oh and the third from the end on the right... shocking condensation on their windows of a morning. Looks like a sauna compared the neighbours Grin

VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2014 20:52

I also sit in The Queensway traffic jam most mornings.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2014 20:53

I'm going to look for the condensation next week!

clairehills · 06/04/2014 20:54

ok maybe queensway is not such a good idea then if its that busy. Its strange on street view it doesn't appear to look like a busy road, i also have a cat so do not want to be near too much traffic for obvious reasons

VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2014 20:57

I think I like the ones on Broadway and Queensway the best out of those. At least with Queensway traffic its only for a short period in the morning and its not as bad in the afternoon and only Wragby rd end as well in the afternoon.

The traffic crawls along so won't be any revving engine noise.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2014 20:59

Queensway is close to the hospital and a lot of people who work there will use it as a cut through to avoid the lights at the end of Wragby Rd/top of Lindum Hill. Also people who work Monks Rd area will cut down the hill through Queensway, St Anne's Rd.

clairehills · 06/04/2014 20:59

Where is Broadway - I looked on teh may and it came up with North Hykeham

ahahha Viva its the one next door to the people with big 4x4 plus blue Aygo and red mini Wink

Kasterborous · 06/04/2014 21:04

Welton is lovely, we lived there for seven years. It's just North of Lincoln and is a good size with a reasonable amount of amenities.

clairehills · 06/04/2014 21:08

Thanks kaeterborous, what type of shops does it have ?

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2014 21:12

NightSky, I know the red mini, blue Aygo house.

Broadway is off Nettleham Rd. goes to Newport.

Kasterborous · 06/04/2014 21:34

It doesn't have a vast amount. There is a co-op, a paper shop, a couple of knick-knack type shops, a pet shop, A chippy, and an Indian takeaway. A good pub The Black Bull, a post office, a Doctors surgery, a pharmacy, a vets, a hairdressers. The neighbouring village of Dunholme has a butchers, Chinese takeaway, cost cutter, spa and a hairdressers all within easy walking distance.

We moved away just over a year ago due to DH job, but we loved living in Welton. There are also three buses an hour into Lincoln.

Might not quite be what you are looking for as it doesn't have any restaurants or cafés. Might be worth looking into it though.
